The Preparatory Course for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test: N5 Reading

JLPT level 5 preperation
I've been studying Japanese for several years. Mostly I use it reading the internet and listening to movies. I assumed I'd be ready for the most basic JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). Not so... This book is turning out to be really good for broadening my experience as well as showing where I am weak and where I was ready for the test. My teacher also looked at the book and liked it for the pleasant way takes you through preparation for the test and also as a pleasant way to expand your Japanese. She liked the questions. As the title says, it is for 読む (yomu, reading) preparation so there is no audio included. The book consists a vocabulary (both words and Kanji) and multiple choice questions that test vocabulary, points of grammar and understanding. The questions are laid out 4 or 5 to a page with the answers printed upside down at the bottom of the page. I was a bit surprised that some of the multiple choice questions included words not included in the vocabulary section but the words were all basic vocabulary. This book is meant as a review tool for the JLPT, not as a way to learn the language. It is written in Japanese and has English translations for most sections. There is no Romaji -- you need Kana and basic Kanji. I'm loading the questions into Anki (ankisrs.net) as part of my study process. If you are preparing for your first JLPT or understand basic Japanese and are interested in refining your reading skills, I'd recommend this book.

Great book to prepare for grammar and most vocabulary of N5
Excellent book to review the grammar of N5 JLPT. The writing is a little small (I do not wear glasses), especially the furigana. Some key phrases are printed in green (I guess it is to prevent photocopying, unfortunately it makes text less readable). This is not a book to learn Japanese or begin its study. This is a book to quickly review and exercise what you learnt in a regular course and to check that you have all grammar covered for the N5.

Great review book
This book is a book that is great for reviewing for the N5 JPLT test. It covers a lot of the kanji that will appear on the test and has several practice sections for the various types of styles of questions that the test will ask. It also covers a good chunk of grammar and verb conjugation. This is a book good for reviewing not and should not be used instead of a regular instructive textbook.
