A necessary tool in my kitchen. Great for mushrooms! (Update and advice how to cut mushrooms)
I've owned and broken many egg slicers in my day. After my last one hit the dust, I decided to get serious, so I went on a quest for the best one I could find. I wanted a slicer not so much for eggs, but one that would blast through Button mushrooms. We are big mushroom eaters in this house, but many times before I got this tool, I did not want to take the time to fool with them. Enter Westmark W1020 Egg Slicer: I'm loading up on Button mushrooms every time I go to the grocery store! This tool is fantastic for mushrooms alone. Not only that, it's fun to slice them. I stopped doing the dab-with-a-paper towel thing to clean my mushrooms. I now wash my mushrooms in water, which makes it go much more quickly. Some say that's a no-no but Cook's Illustrated says it's not, and I listen to them. (they did a soak test and confirmed they don't absorb water...) I can take a giant pack of mushrooms from Costco, wash them and slice them with this tool in no time compared to what it would take to do by hand. -- Are you a homemade mushroom soup lover? You will love this tool! Don't buy very large mushrooms or they won't fit on this tool. Mushroom Puree' is also awesome and a great alternative to gravy!-- I often do mushrooms in a lardon type cut by slicing through them once with the Westmark, turning the entire sliced mushroom, and slicing through again. This gives me perfect little lardon shaped slices that are great for using in soups and all kinds of dishes. I also use this tool a lot for slicing strawberries. The giant strawberries are too big to fit, but it does a beautiful job on medium to large. This tool is extremely well made and STRONG. It is not your typical wimpy egg slicer. I often take it with me when I travel and know I will be cooking. I have given it as a gift as well to my daughter who went to culinary school who thought her knife skills did not necessitate a tool such as this. Guess what she reaches for now when she wants to slice mushrooms :) This is a fabulous tool that I would really miss if I did not have it. We're eating a lot more mushrooms today because of it! It is worth it to me for that reason alone. ****I recommend that you do not put it in the dishwasher as the finish may discolor. I have had other tools made out of this finish that went dull and chalky in the dishwasher. (a garlic press....) Besides, it is so easy to clean with a quick rinse under the faucet. Update September 15, 2017: I'm still using this tool and have no problem with mushrooms as some of the other reviewers have stated having. After cutting up a bunch of them last night I realized that maybe the issue that breaks strings for some users who try mushrooms is that the motion used must be quick and firm. In other words it's a quick snapping motion as you come down on top of the round part of the mushroom. If you go slow, that is when it becomes difficult to get through the mushroom. It works best for me to stem the mushroom and place stem side down on cutter indention with the rounded part facing me, followed by a quick snapping action. Also, if your mushroom is so large that it's edges are not under the metal strings and you try to cut, you could damage the strings that way. You must cut larger mushrooms in half or even 4ths if you have a super large mushroom. Never try to force if it's not working! UPDATE, June 30, 2023: I bought this slicer in 2013 (10 years ago) and I've not had any strings break slicing mushrooms. I'm convinced that those who get broken strings just aren't using it right and possibly are using mushrooms that are too large. The motion used to slice mushrooms is a snapping motion that uses a quick force to slice through them. You lay the top on top of the apparatus, and then lift your hand from it and come down quickly with your hand and sort of snap/pop it. Otherwise, the strings won't go through and you'll be stretching the wires.

Highest Quality
I bought this based on the description and reviews. This was one of the most expensive egg slicers at Amazon, but what tipped the scales were: all metal, quality aluminum and stainless steel wires, made in Germany by a reputable company, corrosion resistance, product replaced by Westmark's support to one reviewer when the coating started flaking off. I pay extra to get top quality, this is a device that will last for decades, that was obvious when I had it in my hand for the first time. Heavy (in a good way), sturdy, compact. Plus, it works perfectly slicing a hard boiled egg neatly. The wires drop below the sliced egg leaving it cradled in place. You can pick the sliced egg up or turn it 90 degrees to slice again if you want your egg in small pieces for salads or making egg salad. I did not expect to get this quality today, this is something made with the quality of the 50's and 60's. Heck, it might be something out of the 30's except for the industrial grade clear coat on the cast aluminum. Yes, this is not cheap grade aluminum alloy, but rigid sturdy stuff. I never expected to find this quality outside a commercial restaurant supply store. I recommend this. Fast shipping too.

Works Like a Charm
Here's a brief review of the Westmark Egg Slicer: After several usages, I found the product to work like a charm. It's slices and dices eggs for a good consistent egg salad, as you can slice/dice using both directions - both horizontally and vertically though I suggest applying slight compression to each ends using your fingers to best hold in place for the dicing portion (do remember to remove your fingers when completing the full dice). The unit's built is solid and clean up is a breeze. However, I won't be cleaning it in the dishwasher, as I prefer to clean by hand. I haven't yet tried w/ other soft perishables and I've only had it for a couple of weeks. Hence my reason for providing 4*s. Overall, it's the best egg slicer I've used to date and it sure beats slicing and dicing when using a knife.

Works well for mushrooms and eggs
We’ve been using this to help slice mushrooms and hard boiled eggs for our baby. It works well and seems well constructed, it saves a ton of time. The frame is very heavy duty but I’m a little worried the strings could detach. The dishwasher cleans it well

Not flimsy like many others
This slicer is very sturdy, unlike the only slightly less expensive ones whose wires are flimsy and break after a few uses. I normally use for hard boiled eggs, but this one handily sliced mushrooms in no time (I removed stems and placed them stem side up). It is well made and seems like it will hold up. Highly recommend.

Westmark 1020 Egg Slicer works extremely well!
After reading prior reviews, I decided to buy this slicer and am very happy that I did. I bought it specifically to slice mushrooms, and it does an excellent job. The wires are extremely fine, but very well secured. (My last slicer was tossed after three of the wires came loose.) They slice completely through a mushroom (or egg) without leaving little uncut bits that still need to be ripped apart. Someone previously complained that the finish flaked off in the dishwasher, but this problem seems to be solved. I've run mine twice already through the dishwasher without any damage. This is a solid, very well-made slicer that cuts quickly and cleanly through vegetables. I can't wait to try it on cherry tomatoes! I highly recommend this product. Dec 11, 2015 I've now used this for a year and it still works really well. One wire came loose after about three months, and I cut it off, but the rest of them are still secure. The unit still looks brand new (despite multiple trips through the dishwasher) and still cuts eggs and mushrooms like a professional unit. Still highly recommended.

Spülmaschinenfest, robust, Made in Germany. Perfekt.

Fantastic tool. I'm not a gadget guy. I prefer multi-purpose tools and good knife skills. But this offers more than meets the eye. 1. My kids recently discovered a love for hard-boiled eggs in a sandwich, and this tool allows me to indulge it without much (or any) of the mayonnaise required for egg salad. Snip snip done. No waste, no crumbly mess. 2. I've never been concerned about slicing mushrooms by hand. But since I had this I gave it a shot and will never go back. Cuts prep time by 100%. My little guy did it for me. Happily. 3. My older sons also like to make a snack of cheese and crackers that they melt for a few seconds in the microwave. This turns an easily cut chunk into 8 perfect bite-sized slices in one safe step. So it IS a multi-purpose tool. It does a few specific things really well, it gets the kids engaged in the kitchen, and it delivers perfect results for those with still-growing (or diminishing) dexterity, safely and comfortably. Super strong frame. Easy action. Trivial cleanup. I couldn't be happier, or more pleasantly surprised. Highly recommended.
