I learned about the AeroPress through Black Rifle Coffee. I read good things about it and wanted to purchase it, but the standard size AeroPress only makes a 10oz or smaller cup. Once I found the XL version (makes up to 20oz cup), I had to try it. I am very happy with it! The first few tries using it I was a little disappointed. It seemed like the same coffee that was very "strong" in a regular coffee maker was bland in the AeroPress. But then I realized a couple of things: 1) I was not using the AeroPress correctly (see the end of the review for the method I learned), 2) once I started using it correctly, the coffee was smooth and much less acidic tasting that the "strong" brew I was making before. I am loving the AeroPress XL now. I've made a few poor over brews and some regular coffee maker brews since I started using the AeroPress just to contrast and compare and I like the AeroPress the most with pour over a close second. What I learned about the best brew I personally found using the AeroPress is from Lance Hedrick in his video titled “A Very Good Aeropress Recipe, Maybe the Best”. I heat the water and bloom the grinds for 30 seconds. Then I fill the AeroPress to the appropriate line and put the plunger in as directed. I then wait 2 minutes and then very slowly do the press. This simple process makes such a big difference.

A very nice coffee maker. The clear version is attractive, which justifies its $10 USD higher cost. Aeropress is basically a French press that is so much easier to clean and maintain that it’s a no brainer. But does the XL do anything better than the original? It’s a toss up. If you use the same amount of coffee in each to make a volume larger than the press, you need to dilute the concentrate with hot water. So far, the volume of the press doesn’t seem to matter much. The smaller one with more hot water dilution makes the same coffee as the larger one with less hot water dilution. The larger one is nice in that the final cup needs less dilution, but the dilution between the smaller and larger doesn’t seem to make much difference in quality. If you are making larger quantities, like 1L+, get the large one. For everyday single use the smaller is fine. For two or more, get the large. I am happy with both large and small.

I think, in general the AeroPress is one of the best ways to make coffee. Once you get the grind size and timing right and assuming you have quality beans the rest is easy. My only gripe is I think the price is high for what you get compared to the regular size and I think it should come with their filter holder so you don't need to use this stupid inverted method to make coffee.

Had previously owned a Aeropress original, and found the volume to be a bit small. The XL Aeropress can generate two regular size cups of coffee. The quality of the coffee is incomparable. The press technique eliminates all bitterness. THIS IS BY FAR THE SMOOTHEST, BEST-TASTING COFFEE THAT CAN BE BREWED. You will not be disappointed.
