TP-Link TL-WA850RE N300 Wireless Range Extender, Broadband/Wi-Fi Extender, Wi-Fi Booster/Hotspot with 1 Ethernet Port, Plug and Play, Built-in Access Point Mode

I bought this product today ( 4 April 2015). Honestly, before I write a review l should mention the audience for whom this review is relevant. This review is applicable to you if you stay in a flat, with single floor (not Duplex) and your WIFI router is in a corner room like a bedroom, perhaps. Before I got this product, I read/watched a number of reviews on the net , 'cause a) I had no clue about routers / extenders and b) The price point varies from INR 500 to 15,000 in some cases. But if you are like me, who suffers from signal loss in adjacent rooms, and needs a router for his home, I would suggest the TP link 850 is a great buy for the price of INR 1875/-. I reviewed other routers including some TP link versions like the RE200 (Dual Band AC 750), WA875, NETGEAR EX6200, ASUS RT N-12 , before zeroing on this one. So why did I choose this one and how has it turned out? TP - WA850 RE is one of the cheaper of the versions - Big Pro . It is a single band router (2.4 Ghz) but does the job well The installation is very easy - Trust me, I thought it would be very difficult, cause I am not a very Tech savvy person, but it is very easy to install (I used the traditional method of setting up using CAT 5 cable and connecting to the extender admin page). If you have a WPS swtich on your WIFI router, then it is even more easier to install it and takes just 2 mins. This extender, uses the same name (SSID) as your routers, so you will not feel any difference whist moving around the house. Also, for me personally since I use a dual band router ( 5 GHZ and 2.4 GHZ) I can easily distinguish the ACTUAL router signal and the enhancer (extender signal). This extender only operates in the 2.4 ghz range. Excellent reception ! I am now getting signal in my other bedroom and balcony also. I can also stream movies and watch YOUTUBE videos anywhere in the house. There is an easy installation guide which comes along with the product. They also give you a CD with a user guide which is quite useless in these days of internet. Cons - So far None. Advice - Don't waste your money on expensive extenders unless you need them for home office purpose. I had thought about investing another extender called the RE 200 - DUAL BAND AC750 RANGE which is about 3300 INR, but later decided to stick with single band extender because there is no significant advantage between a dual frequency router and single frequency one for a home users. Remember while 5 Ghz has better power output 2.4 GHz has a better range. Also, the dual bands routers, while they are called so, don't transmit, two separate band, but alternate between the best band available in that location (signal strength of the band) Also, tried to procure Netgear EX 6200 in vain as its is not available in India, yet. it is also expensive at 12 K, but I have heard it is one of the best available in the market All in all a good WIFI extender and happy customer. Great product and easy to configure. It's working good awesome range now. I extended my BSNL Netgear router, whis has poor wifi range.

It took me some time to figure the initial setup but once that was done, it worked pike a charm. My smart tv works much smoother now with all ott content, connects more seamlessly to other bluetooth devices(speakers, headphones) while watching online content and I get wifi on my phone in every corner of the house in a 3 bhk apartment. Totally worth the money and super convenient with no wire connections required.

I think the product is good but does not explicitly highlight that it only supports 2.4 GHz band for receiving as well as transmitting signals, which can be a deal breaker for some (like me). So if you were looking to extend your 5GHz range, this may not be for you. Also, the speeds do drop somewhat through the repeater. Not surprise, but worth remembering.

The product does increase the WiFi range but it caused IP conflict issues which resulted in our work laptop VDI disconnecting regularly. Eventually we had stop using it. So if you are planning to use for work, please take into account you will have IP conflict issues.
