PoE (Power over Ethernet) devices (usually cameras) require separate power that can be provided directly over special ethernet cabling. The ports that cabling plugs into must be PoE enabled. I have some PoE devices that I wanted run alongside some normal gear on my home network. This switch made that easy. Here's what I like: - 100Mb PoE cameras ran side bhy side with 1000Mb connections to my router. - There is no setup to use this switch - plug into a power outlet, then add connections. - Indicators show the connection speed and indicate traffic. - Cutouts for wall-mounting the unit are provided. Some comments... - The power cord is very beefy (understandable), but is only 1 meter long. It's a standard cord, so it's easily replaceable. - No pads are provided should the unit sit on a desk or table. If you want to have PoE and regular devices coexist on your network, this device can make that easy.

Our security system cameras are powered over the data cable but we had already used up all the lines that we had installed when building our house. But then we decided we wanted more cameras. So we needed a PoE switch we could install in our attic which would supply power to the new cameras over their Cat6A cable and then utilize one of the pre installed cables to connect the switch to the security system. This product allows us to connect 1 line to the security system and up to 4 PoE lines up to 4 cameras. This is an unmanaged switch so it requires no setup and all connections become purely plug and play. It has a sturdy metal case and fanless design making it a good choice to use even in our attic. It utilizes a standard line voltage plug with no power adapter needed. Unlike most similar devices with their monochrome black cases this unit sports a bright red front panel.

This is a really excellent value for a 5 port poe switch. 4 of the ports are 1Gbps Poe ports and the 5th port is a non poe gigabit unlink port. The total power across all 4 poe ports is 68 watts and the highest power any 1 port can achieve is 30watts. If you were using all 4 ports then they would be capable of 17watts each. The unit also has a VLAN selector switch so you can put each poe device on it own seperate Virtual LAN. The power supply is internal so you don't have to deal with a power brick hanging around. This is a very good option at an incredible price.
