Three Thousand Stitches -: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives : Sudha Murty: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Perfect! - Perfect! Review: If you don't know who she is, it's hard to relate to some of this. - I'm inclined to think that I might be one of the few readers of this book who isn't Indian and doesn't have a clue who Sudha Murty is. I suspect it's a disadvantage. This woman seems to be held in high esteem but she's not well known internationally. I picked this up at Delhi Airport, hoping for the tales of 'ordinary people, extraordinary lives' but found that misleading since the book is mostly about the author and the 'ordinary people' are just the supporting cast for her own achievements. From what I gathered, she's the head of an important charity. That's nice. But she's also rather judgemental seeming to adore the recipients of her charitable work, and to knock her peers. There's a very scathing attack on some women at the airport who don't realise she's travelling business class (Frankly, my dear, if you dress down to fly, don't be surprised if people don't realise you're heading for the front of the plane. Frequent travellers really don't care) but this tale contrasts rather badly with her claims of great poverty for her organisation and how that stopped them building their HQ for many years. She dismisses a close friend's request to attend an important family occasion because she's just too busy and then drags that friend to the office to spend a day seeing just how important her work is. The opening story about the devadasis is a wasted opportunity to tell people more about their lives - but I guess for the home market that education isn't required. For the rest of us, it would be useful. I'm not a religious person but I was brought up on the New Testament adage "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing," so for me, this "Hey, look how important I am and what amazing work my foundation is doing" sits rather uncomfortably. Great work by her group, no doubt, but all a bit too boasty and preachy for my liking.

Such an inspiring book. It truly fits the definition of “ where there is a will there is a way”, it is one of the best books That I have read which addresses the common problems in our society with a serious tone. Thank you Sudha Murthy for this wonderful book , forever grateful.

I enjoyed reading the book. I like authors thoughts and her writing process. Every story has a hidden moral that you realize n get a connected. But I was a little disappointed as the name of the book n story of devadasi was opener to the book. I was expecting that stories are all based on different devadasi’s there personal life and how they felt etc but what I was expected wasn’t there the subject jumped from place to place. Though I jumped but I did enjoyed the read

A very impressive collection of short stories ! ‘Ordinary people, Extraordinary lives’ – is what the tagline of the book says ! The book is nothing but, another beautiful bundle of 11 short stories by Sudha Murty. All stories have significant life lessons and great way to learn. I loved how simplistic her writing, which according to me, is a mark of an able storyteller. Hence, without any doubt, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book ! Her stories get connected with you on personal level while reading and that, probably, is the reason why the author is loved by Reader’s community. The book is very simple and light read, yet an intriguing one ! The language used in the book was super-easy so, I finished it in just 3 sittings ! Really ! Narration of the book is so smooth that making you finish it in just 2 or 3 sittings ! Also from each story, you’ll learn something special and new. I strongly recommend to those who are beginner in English and new reader ! Give it a try and read at once. You won’t regret it !
