One of the best hammers in the trade / my own opinion
I was bought one of these incredible hammers by my Forman back in 1985 when undertaking my apprenticeship. I had that hammer for 20 plus years, always polished the head with 1200 grit & some oil & kept the handle oiled. It was eventually stolen as the rest of all my tools when my van was hit! But the build quality & how perfectly balanced these hammers are I replaced mine & now had that one some 19 years. They’re so good I purchased this one for my son in law to be for Christmas to ensure he has one of the best hammers for his kit. I noticed slight difference with the handle slightly longer & a nice touch with the steel end to the handle now more of a piece & part of the handle. So the quality is now even better than before. For weight dependent on the function your using the hammer for a 16oz is a nice all rounder, if on site & a lot of timber work then a 20oz is nice but they also make a 14oz for pin & light work - so pick wisely as if you purchase one of these hammers if never stolen you will have it for life if you look after it. Ps he had a five mile smile when he opened this at Christmas 😁🎄🎅🏻

Perfect balance and feels great in the hand
My dad was a Joiner and always told me how good Estwing hammers were and how the leather version moulds to your hand over time and you can pick up a bunch of hammers blindfolded and know which one is yours by the feel of the handle. I finally got one myself and I can definitely see why people like them. I had read the quality had gone downhill, but I can't see any obvious defects, or lack of quality. Its nicely finished, with smooth edges on all the metalwork. The leather is tightly packed and finished well and feels great in the hand. The claw is slightly off center, but the mouth is even, which is all that matters. The endcap that holds the leather plates in place is solid. I went for the 16oz as I will be using it as a finishing hammer for trims and architraves etc and its perfect for the job and works well. The weight, size and balance is perfect and its a joy to use. I'm looking forward to many years of service from it. I paid £36.99 when it was on offer and I think its good value for the quality of the product.

Great quality, beautiful handle and well balanced. One of the best.
As with all Estwing products, you pay for the quality, but boy, are they good quality! I have the weight forward hammer for everyday working and its awesome, but I wanted hammer which was a bit more traditional for fine woodworking - for no other reason than I like to keep a separate set of tools for fine work. The striking face, claw and shaft are one piece forged meaning it should last forever under normal use. The handle is made from leather discs polished to a shine. All in all, its a classy hammer worth every penny and really looks the part.

The hammer with street cred!
My third Estwing. The last two got nicked after seven years and 16 years respectively. This new one is not as well crafted as the previous one. Flawed leather wrap, shaft is not finished neatly, looks like a Friday afternoon job and they are no longer dated. But it feels good to hold, they are great to use and I missed not having one for a month. In building trade and I see a fairly even mix of leather handles and the rubber ones. Probably a luxury purchase for DIY though.
