Q: How does the grappling arm work?? Does it actually pick things up or do you manually have to place them in the claw?

It picks things up from what i remember. My son mever really used the claw one. He prefered the flat one for his cars to go on. There is a weight that you use to stop it falling off too. You will have to put sand in there or stones and the lid closes

Uncertain as to what you mean by up or down The arm is not movable vertically but the crane rotates and the cables move up and down to lift light objects

The claw only works with items shipped together and does not work with the remote control, it just serves to lift and lower and rotate the crane.
