Auto Battling Deck Building Mayhem
An absolutely FANTASTIC game. Exactly what you would expect from an award winning game. Each turn you add 2 new cards to your deck (or in rare circumstances more). You also get to take out any number of cards. Then, you turn each deck loose on the others, tournament style. Seating takes some getting used to, even for seasoned gamers, but after one game, you have it down. Immediately after playing, I wanted to play it again, and again, and again, and again. My 10 and 11 year old were able to play with us with no issue. With multiple paths to victory, and a short play time, your strategy can be anything from maximum control to sit back and watch the cards fly. Just one caveat. If you're absolutely adverse to chaos in your games, probably not for you. If however, you love the idea of a rollicking good time with friends who don't take themselves too seriously, look no further.

Simple luck deck building game
Luck is a major element in the game, but finding a stable way to win more in many games needs your skill. Idea is simple and good, balance is not perfect but still good. Cons are needing a lot of shuffling and organizing, which makes playing digital similar games a more chilling idea.

Super fun, not too difficult
My family of 4 (2 teens) loves this game. We can’t wait to play it with our friends, for a larger 8 player game.

Too simple and luck-based
Doesn't really feel much like a deck building game due to the significant role luck plays in this game.

This game is unbelievably fun and is literally for anyone.
The directions are written really well and allow you to quickly glance at them to understand what to do. There’s plenty of bold face words to immediately find what you’re looking for. The directions are only 2 double sided sheets. It also comes with 2 double sided game play examples. I would advise to read the directions before those. The varying cards really allow you to come up with multiple strategies. Do you want to build out your deck by choosing multiple lower level cards? Or fortify it with strong cards but fewer? Do you want lower number cards to take advantage of combo bonuses? Or go for the powerhouse cards that aren’t quite as powerful as the combo but they are powerful? For instance, pull the mime card at the right time and it turns from a power of 1 to 7! Each player draws and discards their cards (doing the entire 1/2 phases) at the same times which really saves on time. There’s little waiting which makes it seems like there’s a whole lot more action. The fewer actions and things to do in the game don’t make it seem simple. It makes it faster and more action packed without taking away the complexity which is deck building and battling. This game is very easy to re-setup. We didn’t go through even half of any of the letter decks so I just shuffled the discard piles and placed them on the bottom as the instructions tell you to. Then I chose new trophies and gave each player back their 6 starter cards that match the symbol on their card. Then we were set back up for a new match. We timed our 4th game and it only took 16 minutes to play based on the direction’s two player rule of whoever tops the other person by 11 points wins. STRATEGIES I TRIED: Game played choosing the lowest cards I could: I lost the first 2 trophies, I won the third. I lost the fourth. The other player played by getting the highest cards they could immediately. I lost at the end of the 4th round by default because they had 11 points over me. Game played choosing the highest card I can every time no matter how many cards I can draw: I won these rounds- 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and won the game! PROBLEMS The only problems I can see with the game so far is the cards come super curved. You’ll have to flatten them out. And the problem in gameplay is how well the other player actually shuffled their cards. There’s a pyrotechnician card that says “if you have a single or no card left in your deck then gain 2 fans”. I read this as, “if you have a one strength or no cards left in your deck, gain 2 fans.”

Amazing game but poor packaging
I’ve played this game online and I loved it which is the reason why I ordered this game. I did not appreciate the effort that was put into protecting the outer integrity of the game box. Someone just slapped a label on the clear packaging already on the box. It just so happened to rain on the day it was delivered. I was very lucky that the package didn’t have any major damage or even water damage.

At first I was a bit skeptical about Challengers winning the "Spiel des Jahres" award but after playing it I see why it did. Think of a trading card game tournament and building and improving your deck of cards between the games - but in a light and fun way and more leaning towards party game. Played over 7 quick rounds you face a different opponent each round in an auto battle inspired duel. Between the rounds you get to modify your deck and here's where important decisions are made. Different sets of cards have different ways of interactions between them - these are drawn randomly from a shared pool with the ability the redraw to make it a little bit more likely to get the cards you want. This randomness adds to the fun though. You always have to adjust your playstyle a little bit. It never feels like you're being punished. There is always something good to choose from and the mechanisms are not as deep as in real trading card games. For won games you receive trophies and points and the two highest scoring player face off at the end to determine the overall winner. Lots of strategies to go after and important but not overwhelming decisions to make between the games. I like that it's playable with up to 8 players and always takes the same play time since it's a set round number. No downtime since everyone plays at the same time. Theoretically you can add more base games and play it with even more players (up to 16 with 2 games/up to 24 with 3 games/etc) and the play time still stays roughly the same. You might want to add more finalist rounds to determine the tournament winner or just go by points. Highly recommend checking this game out!

Challengers has quickly become a favourite game in our house! It’s simple enough for the kids to join in but still has enough strategy to keep it interesting for the adults. We love how quick it is to set up and how every game feels a little different with the card drafting.
