The Easiest Way to Learn Na'vi-EVER!!: Volume 1 of 8 Review: IS THERE A RATING HIGHER THAN FIVE STARS? - What a great way to learn Na'vi FAST! And have fun at the same time. And fun is the operative word in learning Na'vi the EASY way. Let me explain. As a former English and foreign language teacher, I have a background in linguistics and second-language acquisition. A basic concept in acquiring another language is that your state of mind when you are learning it affects the ease and speed with which you pick it up. The operative term in this concept is the "affective filter." The affective filter is akin to a sentry in your brain who snaps to attention and tries to block access to the language-aquisition portion of your brain when you're learning a second language. The interesting thing is that your state of mind controls the behavior of this barrier. The more relaxed you are, the more fun you're having, the more interesting the learning situation is, etc., the more easily you will acquire the new language. In other words, fun translates into lowering your affective filter and allowing your brain to latch onto the new material. There are other concepts about learning a foreign language that I won't go into here, but White's approach is like the perfect example of the best way in all areas to enlarge you bilingual abilities. From the beautiful, colorful book cover, to the witty, humorous commentary, to the instructions on how to use the workbook, to the variety of intriguing puzzles, etc., White has covered all the bases in making these exercises delightful, easy, and effective. His suggestions on how to use the flash cards and his advice to work through the book three times are both right on target for allowing you to pick up Na'vi FAST. Add all that to the give-away deal you get with this book, and WOW! That alone will put you in such a positive frame of mind that your affective filter will be high tailing it out of town every time you pick up this book. And you will soon be able to communicate with your fellow Na'vi fans as effortlessly as you use your native tongue. You can't beat a deal like that. Is there a rating higher than five stars? (This review is posted by Patricia Boeckman. Dr. Rhodes' name appears here because of our co-authored book.) Pain Banishment: Don't Manage Your Pain, Banish It Completely - Even When Nothing Else Works Review: Love!! - Love having this, very informative and love that it’s gives flash cards you can cut out and use I just wish they would come out with volume two with more details on the language, hopefully soon.

Just beginning, but......
I have been to the website (learnnavi.org) and actually began learning some basics a good while back (drove my colleagues nuts, LOL), but didn't stick with it. I'm a DVM/trauma surgeon, however, so I tend to learn new things quickly, and my Avatar obsession has been recently reawakened. When I saw this book here when I came to order the calendar, I was skeptical....esp. given the low price. I could not have been more wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT job! EXCELLENT format!!!! LOVE the humor, too. Having learned two other "common" foreign languages in the past, I have no doubt that this method will render me fluent quickly. I know I can download and print it for free, but much prefer it in this already-bound-as-a-real-book format. I plan to get a couple more copies, in fact. GORGEOUS cover (both front and back), btw. When can we expect volumes 2 through 8 to be published this same way? (Please, please, please........RUTXE?????) Irayo, Dusty. Eywa ngahu!

Very helpful with the language.
I learned a lot, and I still have a long way to go to master such a difficult language. Not that there is much of a language at the moment, but hopefully with 2 new movies, that will change. This book is helpful with the syntax and grammatical construction of this new and beautiful language from a movie that has touched billions the world over. I only hope we can start living more like the Na'vi and less like the destructive RDA as we have been. This is for anyone who loved the movie Avatar and wants to learn more about the language of the Na'vi. As Neytiri would say, Oel ngati kameie, tsamsiyu.

Awesome use
This book is only a start to bigger things to come in terms of introducing the Navi language even more by way of memorization skills for those of us who need to see it in black and white, flash cards, etc.

Learn to speak Na'vi…without a pronunciation guide?!
I guess this book could be described as a workbook for a foreign language course- flash cards, word games, puzzles, some song/speech translations, some sentence structure and counting exercises. I think I've found one very important thing left out- I don't find a pronunciation guide anywhere. In my skimming, thoroughly I thought, I found only the pronunciation for the Na'vi word for thanks/ thank you "Irayo" is pronounced "ee-rye-oh", not "eye-RAY-oh" (see this on page 56). I haven't tried most of the resource guide on page 63 but one item- learnnavi.org- is mentioned here on Amazon in some of the reviews of Avatar related books. I'd question whether or not there will be 7 more volumes in the series since this one is unauthorized (which probably explains the this is a FREE BOOK! Disclaimer on the first page). Interesting cover picture- she's an aspiring makeup artist/ model from Puerto Rico who did her own Na'vi "look".

Nay sayers
Why on earth are some reviewers getting all political? Have you forgotten how to have fun?

... pronunciation so you're basically guessing and hoping for the best as you learn
They don't really explain the pronunciation so you're basically guessing and hoping for the best as you learn. Not worth buying.

Not exactly what I had expected, but it's not too bad. The style it's written in- activities and flash cards- is not the way I learn best, but I agree it might be good for others. It does make trying to learn Na'vi fun though, and I wish there were more. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the other 7 volumes will come out some time. Like I said, not the best for me but not too bad either, so I'd probably would buy the other 7 volumes if they get out printed.
