Review: We could all do with some gentle reminders of the way things used to be-- and should be if we all want to get along and be our personal best… I’ve just finished reading the short and thought-provoking little book (106 pages) written by my childhood friend and first playmate, Judy Marie. She lived across the street and I probably saw her nearly every day from kindergarten through high school. Back then, she exhibited and practiced much of what she’s written in this volume---I just didn’t notice it or internalize it at the time. She was smart, artistic and pretty and I knew she’d be successful in whatever she did with her life. She became a teacher and eventually a beloved principal of an elementary school. Retired now, this book is a collection of messages she once crafted for her school’s students over the years. Her subtitle says it all: “Essays on Manners and Courtesy.” We could all use a little of “that” now, couldn’t we? While teachers and parents of young children are the obvious targets for this book, I enjoyed reading the dozen or so chapters and urge those of you who are grandparents to grab a copy and share it with the kids as well. There are essays on honesty and integrity, manners, appreciation and gratefulness, patience, mutual respect, pride and confidence, positive thinking, making good choices, responsibility and reliability---and more. From the book: “Gentle Reminders is a collection of timeless thoughts, meaningful memories, and positive examples that sparked the notion of sharing positive ideas in order to shape the minds and consciences of budding little ones, and mature big ones, alike.” “The reminders…and their use and delivery can be adapted and adopted to various settings and circumstances.” After reading her book, I agree: “There is value in positive talk and there is strength in Gentle Reminders.”
