Works great, easy on ink, a little pricey, but worth it
This is a good, basic printer. A while back, we purchased a fancy photo printer from a different company, and that thing never did work right. So I was ready to get rid of it and its expensive ink cartridges, and all I wanted was something to print text and things like web pages, forms, etc. After some fairly extensive research, I got this one. It's a little pricier than I'd hoped to pay, but it prints (so far) like a workhorse in the two months I've had it. I either use this printer for very small jobs (like a one-page form), or big printing jobs like printing 67 pages of a magazine proof that I'm working on, or a book proof (that has photos). I'm not printing a final product, so I don't need it to be super-high quality. I just need a printout so I can proofread. This is perfect for that. I haven't had to change the cartridges yet, so it does seem to get a lot of printing out of its cartridges. I like that it does double-sided printing without much effort. It turns the pages over automatically; you don't have to gather them up and re-feed them to get double-sided printing. I haven't (and probably won't) set up the fax, but it does have one. I just can't speak about it. I do use it for copying, and it does a fine job with that.

Dependable With a Few Flaws
Overall, this is a great printer. Setup is quick and easy. I love that I can change the ink without having to open up the entire printer like I did with my old model from another brand - it’s super simple to have the small ink door on the front of the unit. I also love that this unit comes with extra ink, which was the main reason I purchased. The unit is large enough to house a scanner, but small enough that it fits on a short table that I slide under my desk to hide. Print quality seems fine for my needs. I mainly print emails and other work-related documents when I work from home. My complaints are few and mostly minor: 1) I wish the screen was bigger. I’m a man with large fingers, and using the touchscreen has been problematic at times. Thankfully, I rarely have to use the screen. 2) The paper tray has an odd construction with a lid that is very flimsy (the lid also houses the pull-out lip for the paper to rest on once it’s been printed on). I wish it was made from a little thicker material; I’m afraid I might break it.

Why isn't there a Darwinism award for bad tech? This piece of garbage would take GOLD.
What a complete waste of my money. This printer is BRAND NEW and the literal FIRST piece of paper i tried to print, it told me there was a paper jam. I followed the prompts and it seemed to work. For about a day. Now almost every time i try and print, first it tells me there is a paper jam, i open the tray about an inch and put it back and it prints. Well, I'm into month 2 (and oh look, i can only return for 30 days) of owning this complete POS and now i have ink smearing on EVERY page i print. WHY?! WHAT HAPPENED?!? WHAT POSSIBLY COULD HAPPEN TO MAKE E.V.E.R.Y. PAGE HAVE SMEARING OUT OF THE BLUE?! This is BY FAR the worst printer I have EVER used, and that's saying something considering I've had HP in the past that work better than this oversize piece of kindling. THANKS, BROTHER! You've forever given me a company brand to HATE for life. I'll never purchase anything from this brand again. UPDATE Brother replaced the first printer and it works like a piece of crap. I have to restart it constantly, it CLEANS IT SELF EVERY FREAKING DAY and BLOWS through ink. I use this for ebay and stamps.com printing black and white shipping labels ONLY. This printer now has EMPTY COLORS ON ALL OTHER INK LEVELS and i have NEVER PRINTED A COLOR PAGE FROM THIS PRINTER, EVER. It's a WORKHORSE WITH ONE JOB. BLACK AND WHITE PRINTING. How is it even POSSIBLE that I'm using colored ink?!?! This is such a scam. I will NEVER go with this company again and even tho they tried to make it right, A scam is a SCAM.

Serious Ink Savings!
So it's been close to a year since I purchased this printer. I bought it as I was beginning my MSW program and would be printing a lot of journal articles and other reading material. It's used by others in the house as well. All the major functions work well as expected and the additional cloud functions are a real added value. Scanning to a searchable PDF straight to onedrive is one of my favorites. The REAL power is in the INK! Purchased October 2016 and I have not changed ONE CARTRIDGE through mid-July 2017 (and still going with low ink warnings)! That's after 2 semesters worth of printing along with the other printing that happens in the house. We don't print the most, but the old printer would have definitely gone through 2-3 complete cartridge swaps by now. With the supplied cartridges, it looks like I won't have to buy ink for another 1 - 2 years at this rate.

This printer does not print labels without an excruciating work-around.
When I purchased this printer I was impressed by the ink supply and cost compared to my old HP. I was tired of buying ink (up to $80 every two months) and this Brother printer was offering me a different approach to buying ink. I am now debating buying a cheap (with super expensive ink) HP just to print labels, which as a teacher, I need to print once a week. After contacting Brother, they acknowledged that this printer is not meant to print labels, but they offered a work-around that involves turning the machine around, opening the back and feeding the sheets one at a time. Very inconvenient. My 20+ year old HP easily handled labels. Two other issues: the printer does not stay wirelessly connected, I have to turn it off and on to get a connection, so I just ordered a cable. The other issue is the size of the paper supply--it does not hold much and, since it is a covered tray that I have to pull out of the computer, I can't see how much paper is left, and it is awkward to remove, fill the tray, and reinsert it. All of this is very annoying. On the positive side, it prints well, it does not eat ink (my first supply lasted 8 months as opposed to two with my HP), and the ink is relatively inexpensive. I like the duplex printing; it saves paper. Most of the time, I like this printer very much. I'm just amazed that they created this printer without the option to print labels built in.
