These stains are not opaque. However, if you put enough of this in, it will be pretty black. I used it on oak furnature. It lools black from a distance, but up close you can still see through the finish a little bit. It is more transparent than using paint. I don't know if it is soluble in laquer or not. Check the product information on that.

Yes, there is a large variety of clear coats compatible with this stain.

I don't know if you can apply this directly to the wood. I added it to a water based polyurethane varnish and got great results on furnature. I don't know if it would work directly or how durable it would be without varnish. And you probably don't want to put varnish on the fretboard.
