Impressive power to cut tall thick weeds
This review is based on first use with 1 &1/2 charges. . If I run into trouble and have to return it, I will update my experience. Battery life: about as expected and advertised. I trimmed f1/4 1 acre residential yard trimming heavy grass, including weeds with stalks up to 3/8" diameter& chain link fences in 1 1/2 charges. it has to run full throttle to cut the thick stuff, whereas my gas trimmer didn't. but then my gas trimmer blew up after maybe 25 uses and cost $200 and I got this one for $109 and can replace it without batteries for under $6o and it does the same job in the same time and is actually easier to use since it is lighter. Charges fast. Says 1 hour for this size battery, but maybe faster. . \Weight: unlike gas models this unit is heavy at the cutting end. The battery is extremely light weight even not comparative to it's size, but I'd still rather own two 2 AH batteries than one 4AH. The string seems to be nothing generic like you can buy in bulk and I think more durable. Operation: it is not overpowered like the gas ones, therefore I don't recommend the 20V single string model to anyone who is trimming anything in addition to regularly mowed grass such as thick stalk weeds like I needed to cut. And obviously even this 40V model is not suitable for commercial, every day use. . Regarding string feeding complaints in reviews: despite all the complaints and bad reviews here about this auto-feed design not feeding out, I had no problem with mine. I think the bad reviews based upon the supposed non feeding issue are due to the reviewers not reading the instructions. If they called support, i suspect the issue was resolved and they've all been too lazy or perhaps personally dishonest to change their reviews to reflect their mistakes. But if I am wrong and mine has an issue, I know I can depend upon Amazon and GteenWorks to resolve the issue for me. Feeding discussion continued: twice the string got short and i had to do what the instructions say, which is to pull the trigger for 2-5 seconds and then let off the trigger for 2-5 seconds before resuming work. one time when one string went up inside the spool, I had to take the spool out and refeed the line through the hole. Twice more I had to press the button in the side of the spool hub and manually pull out the strings on both sides. But most of the time it fed out automatically just as it says it does. And frankly, it works at least as well as my old bump feed one and if it stops auto feeding entirely, I would put up with having to stop once in a while and manually extracting the lines as described above, it works that good and costs so little comparative to rival products. . I also almost sent it back the same day, today. because I placed it on charge after I finished the yard and in about 5 minutes the green "done" light came on and would not go off even if I unplugged everything and plugged it back on, it went right to "done charging". intent on sending it back I disassembled it and threw it in the box and went online and requested a return. Amazon automatically created a new order to replace it at 0$ an said I had a month to return this one. So then I looked at the battery again, which I had left in the charger plugged in, and it was charging and the read "charging light was on. It finally took a full charge.supposedly if a hot pack is plugged into the charger, it says teh hot pack indicator light is supposed to be orange. Well I am assuming that that was the problem, a hot pack, but the orange light never came on, just the red and green ones. So I am assuming that there is a minor malfunction in the charger either once or permanent that didn't let it show the "hot pack" delay it was in before I packed it up. I greatfully unpacked and reassembled it because I don't like being suckered by garbage products for any amount of $. I'd rather be wrong and have to repack and unpack something than actually have to return it because it's phony garbage. The only pleasure I get out of that experience is when i'm smearing the truth all over Amazon about my bad experience with the product with almost vengeful zeal.

Good for battery powered version, need to recharge frequently
Like other battery powered landscaping equipment, it's not as powerful as the blended gas versions. However it's easy to start and cuts grass. Only 1 string that twirls around. An area with 15" tall grass, it clogged easily and had to remove the grass; even when taking very small bites. It doesn't cut heavy, hardened dandelion stems. The 40v battery needs to be charged often, so plan ahead for large projects. I'm keeping it because I can start it and I'm retired so have time to keep stopping to recharge. It's better than some battery weedeaters. This is the 4th Greenworks device we've purchased and they all work; just less powerful than the liquid fuel items, but better than many other battery brands friends have I think.

Makes Weedeating Easy
Update August 2025: Using a high quality string & winding it on the spool yourself will not only save you money, but alot of time & the amount of string you go through. The spool replacements I purchased on Amazon were all poor quality. The string wouldn't advance because it was wound too tight & it got worn down really fast. The difference between the 2 is quite obvious & I'll never buy those preloaded spools again. It's easy to load the spools yourself. It takes just a few minutes. Now that I've got good string that is wound correctly, I'm blasting through edging and thick, overgrown weeds no problem. I only have to advance the string about 2 times for the exact same areas that used to require 10+. OG Review: I used to own a Stihl gas powered, pull-start weedeater and I hated that thing. I could never get it started and if I did by some chance, it wouldn't advance new string by tapping it. It ended up sitting in my garage for years & has since been sold. I said to myself never again. I recently purchased a GW lawnmower & I've been really impressed with it. The only thing I needed was a weedeater. I went back & forth on whether to buy this, but decided to order it hoping it would somehow be easier to use. Like the lawnmower, the assembly instructions for this are poorly written. They give you the basic idea, but the rest is up to you to figure out. The clamp to attach the handle to the pole is very difficult to get aligned & in place. It requires a pair of needle-nose pliers to squeeze it together so that the handle piece can fit over it. There is nothing in the directions about this. Other than that, the rest of it was easy to assemble. This weedeater is super easy to start, stop & restart as many times as needed. I love that!! The life of the battery is good & I've used this for up to 45 minutes before it needs recharging. The string did not advance on the 1st try, so I took it apart and discovered it was wound wrong on the spool (it came that way). It was an easy fix and I've had no problems since. As far as performance, I was amazed at how easy this is to run and what it can cut down. I didn't expect it to power through thick weeds & small saplings, but it does. I managed to weedeat a huge, overgrown area that my lawncare guy has never attempted. That part of my property now looks the best it ever has. If I'd had to pay someone else to do that work, it would've been pretty costly, so the weedeater has already paid for itself. I'm now able to do all of my lawncare myself & I'm happy I can save $ after the initial investment in these pieces of equipment. I highly recommend this weedeater, as well as other GW battery operated lawn equipment. I own 3 GW's products & all of them are easy to use, affordable & hold up well.

Review from a woman
As a first time female user of a weed wacker, i found it easy to use and handle. It performed well on my yard for both edging and weed wacking. I found it easy to switch back and forth between the functions The battery lasted long enough for my moderately sized south Florida suburban yard. The only negative was u has to open the wire and feed out knew during use. This only happened the second time i used it. Not sure why. I asked siri how and was easily able to do it with just a word explanation.

Not compatible with the regular 40V batteries you use with other greenworks 40v series. Probably some Greenworks scam to try to get you to buy different batteries

Es ligera en comparación a otras ya con la pila puesta, por lo que facilita el uso y manejo en cualquier lugar, yo la utilizo en lugares con declive

Great looking tool, bought it “Used” from the Warehouse section for a great price, but it Did not fit my Greenworks 40 volt batteries. From what I can figure out, the USA has a different Greenworks 40v platform and my Canadian bought batteries do not fit it. This tool seems to be manufactured for the American market, I could spend a couple hundred bucks to buy the proper battery and charger, (GW Elite or G-Max I think) but that would negate any savings. Returned.
