EXCELLENT product
I use steel oats all the time. Amazon provides the best price I can find anywhere. I make an oatmeal using my slow cooker that both my husband and I love. I am including it below for anyone that wants to try this. Let me emphasize that despite the fact the recipe says cook overnight, I have found that everytime, it takes 3 to 3 1/2 hours to complete. Initiall I thought it was my slow cooker and I bought a new one. Same thing. PLEASE READ MY NOTE BELOW. Therefore I suggest that if you are going to try this, do it while awake. What I do is make the oatmeal and then put it into individual serving size bowls and refrigerate. When we want it, I heat each bowl (covered) for one minute, stir and heat for one more. Breakfast is ready!Ingredients:1 cup steel cut oats3 1/2 cups Almond Milk (or milk of your choice)1 cup peeled and chopped apple1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts,Pecans or almonds)2 tablespoons butter1 tablespoon ground cinnamon2 tablespoons brown sugar1 teaspoon vanilla extractDirections:1.Spray the inside of your crock pot with PAM. Place the milk, cinnamon and brown sugar and whisk to blend. Add the apples, butter and nuts and whisk again. Finally add the steel cut oats and stir once more. Cover the cooker, set to Low, and allow to cook 6 to 7 hours (for firm oats) or 8 hours (for softer texture). Please read my note below:I have tried this recipe several times and it is excellent. The only thing is that in my slow cooker , on low temperature, this is done in four (4) hours. Therefore, I prepare this during the day; not overnight, and I just store it in a bowl (covered) and when ready we portion it out and reheat in the microwave. YUMMY!Sandra Kohn

I like the oats simmered for 15 minutes or slightly longer
If you're accustomed to regular (not quick) oatmeal in a cardboard canister box preparing these will come as a surprise. Almost through the first bag now, I have discovered that the only way of cooking them that works for me is to put the appropriate amounts of boiling water and oats together in a sauce pan, keep the lid off and keep the heat on a low setting. Stirring frequently, particularly if one does not use a coated pot. Cleanup of the pot takes a bit of energy, as the stuff is very sticky, and is easier with a coated pot. I like the oats simmered for 15 minutes or slightly longer. They have a chewy texture that's pleasant. If you prefer keep them going another few minutes, just watch that the water (or milk, if you add that) doesn't run low. They have none of the powdery or gritty texture of regular oatmeal, and do pack more flavor as well. I haven't yet tried using them in recipes for bread or pancakes, but when I do I'm going to cook them first.Soaking oats for 12 hours in the fridge didn't soften them sufficiently for consumption by a non-equine, so I put them in the microwave for a short time. I turned away for no longer than a minute -- and found the gluey stuff had bubbled all over the turntable. So the warning is -- cleaning up the microwave after a failed cooking effort is harder than scouring a stainless steel pot. Never leave this stuff unattended.Once I hit on the easiest method the end product is great with a bit of Grade B maple syrup. I usually toss in a few walnuts and dried berries as well.

Fabulous product and good price
This is good stuff and is exactly the same as the more expensive stuff in the tin. The price is much better than at my local stores. I put one container in an old tin that I saved and the rest in the freezer so I don't need to worry about bugs or staleness. The box I received today (I use Subscribe & Save) was dated 02-18-13 and expires 02-15-2015, so it was fresh.I learned that if I make one batch (1 cup oats to 4 cups water), the best way to keep it from overflowing the pan is to mix about 1 cup of water with the oats and let it boil for a minute or so. Use a bigger pan than you think you will need - mine is 3 quarts or so. I then add the rest of the water (which I have heated separately), turn the heat to low, and leave it, with occasional stirring, for about 20 minutes. Works great. I eat part and put the rest in the fridge. The 1:4 ratio is what is in the McCanns tins. Bob's packaging says 1:3 and recommends covering the oatmeal when cooking. One serving (1/4 of the batch) heats in about a minute in the microwave. Easy way to have this every day without the hassle.

Great bulk product -saves money & easy to make ahead for quick breakfasts
The 4 pack is great, economical compared to buying singly at the grocery store. We get up quite early during the week so here is what I do: Use a smaller sized crockpot, grease it with a little coconut oil, put in one cup of steel cut oats, 1 cup milk, and 2.5 cups water, add a little liquid stevia to sweeten, cook on low for 2.5 hours. Keep covered as it cools, mix in plenty of cinnamon (also a cholesterol skimmer:) and sometimes some ground flax seed if I have it around. Put in a covered bowl in the fridge. We get a little out each morning into our bowls and microwave it. Healthy, yummy, and easy.
