Good condition, fast shipping. Hilarious book!

This book provides a bit of comic relief for myself as a Modern Art history prof and art students after lots of early 20th century art theory and the collective existential crisis it can cause.

Love this book. Great mockery without insult to Ladybird.

Funny, funny, funny. For those who remember dear Ladybird books with their wonderful, iconic artwork and delightful approach to learning to read, this book makes great fun of all that. I still have a very worn and precious "talkabout Starting School" Ladybird book which I read with my daughter and will read to my grandson. My daughter will be enjoying the "We go to the gallery" Dung Beetle book.

HILARIOUS! clever spoof on art world. get this book , it is spot on.!

HILARIOUS!!! I got it at the Whitney Museum of American art in New York and was so tickled by it I gave it to a friend, so I bought another copy on amazon. I want to give it to all my art friends. It only takes 10 minutes to read and is truly witty and captures the artword exactly. FUNNY!!!!!!!!! I will order a dozen next time and give to friends!!

Hilarious and Irreverent

This book is hilarious, and explains and pokes fun at different modern / contemporary art concepts through the lens of an old-fashioned children's book. Not really meant for children, it makes a great gift for an art lover, hipster or yourself. A fun quick little book to peruse and get a smile from, or to leave out for guests to thumb through.

buy it for some laughs for yourself, then to pass on to anyone interested in art, literature, contemporary criticism!

sly satire!

Funny! Sly satire! I gave this book to my unmarried thirty-something son, saying I thought he should start building a library for his (future someday) children. We were in a restaurant and he laughed as he read it, and saw a friend across the room and immediately popped over to share the book with him.

Wonderful, tongue-in-cheek, adult-oriented book.

This one is even funnier than its companion WE GO OUT. I highly recommend as a book adults will get a big kick out of. Don't know about kids.

Dung Beetle book - motto: "Est doctrina de stercore": (From sh*t comes learning) Not for kids!

A lovely take on Mummy (who could have been an artist herself had she not had John and a Susan - & tells them so!) taking her children to a modern art gallery and "explaining" the exhibits! From other Amazon reviews I read that the author was an artist who came up with the idea of making adult satirical "Ladybird"-type books, and got sued by them for it (her idea then taken up by themselves in a much gentler, polite form as the adult Ladybirds produced now). This one is much more direct, not for the faint hearted & definitely not for children! There is discussion of large body parts, nudity and rabbits 'cut in half'; when I say 'discussion', I mean one comment by each character...Can't resist one quote:-John sees the painting."I could paint that," says John."But you didn't," says Mummy.Lovely!

Warning! Art! Contains Nudity!

This book is for children of all ages over the age of 20 or under the age of three, anyone in between might be scarred for life... Written in the style of the children's L**yb*rd book series, this slim volume covers most of the modern art field, and the book, like the art itself, can be interpreted on many levels. A mother takes her young children to an art gallery and then comments on each piece to her baffled children.Step by step we begin to understand the personalities of each of the protagonists in the story. I just hope that the children got the chance to understand their mother's complex points of view before Social Services became involved! Excellently illustrated with clear text, each double page left me with a wry smile on my face.Highly Recommended

A clever, cutting and very cynical look at the modern world.

A clever, cutting and very cynical look at the modern world, viewed via the medium of a spoof on a much-loved series of children's books. I bought this because I was given some of the ladybird books for grown ups as a birthday present, and wanted to support the author/artist of the original idea that was *borrowed* to create the new range. I'd give this a five star but there are fewer four star reviews and therefore this is more likely to be read by potential buyers.

A Dung Beetle is earthy; a Ladybird is twee

Satire Alert! This is a clever comment on the dangers of modern parenting. It's NOT the nostalgic Ladybird "Ooo we're so awful!" format. Not for the prudish or squeamish but it hits home. Mothers, pretentious art viewers and abstract art all come under the scathing eye of the writer and illustrator. The tone of the ladybird reading books is perfectly matched. The confusions of childhood get a look in, too. If you ever read Private Eye ofr watch 'Have I got News for You?' you'll enjoy this.

The original and best...

Ascerbic wit, far funnier than Ladybird's spoof versions. The author was the originator of the spoof idea, but unfortunately used the Ladybird logo in the original first edition. Ladybird sued her, then promptly nicked her idea for themselves. Sequels 1b and 1c leave us in no doubt of the author's view of these proceedings, with tart comments sprinkled on front and back pages - as funny as the spoof content!
