Compared to local sources, a good product and value
I can purchase saffron locally from various stores. Spanish saffron of this quality is typically sold in the stores for $6-$7/g in 1 g portions. This 2 g container brings the price down to $5/g, and is equivalent to what I was buying. I like the product, and certainly recommend it. That said, I have also been trying other saffrons, and recently purchased a 5 g container of Iranian/Persian saffron. I made my first paella using that saffron just yesterday. Visually, the Spanish saffron has some yellowish threads among primarily red threads. The Persian saffron was entirely red threads, as advertised. Both saffrons make a very good paella, and I have used this Spanish saffron in both risotto and fish stews. I suspect that the Persian saffron would work at least equally well in the full range of dishes. Purchased in a 5-g tin, the Persian saffron was about $4.50/g. Since I use saffron fairly regularly now, and it has a long shelf life, I have no reluctance to buy larger quantities, and may explore even larger amounts to further reduce the price. For someone wishing to buy a more modest amount, this saffron may be an excellent choice and value.

First time buying saffron
I have never bought saffron before, only read about how to watch out for fake or low quality stuff. We have had safflower, aka b*****d or Mexican saffron, in the cupboard for ages. While it has its merits and the flavor and color resemble saffron it pales in comparison. At least in my opinion after the first use. The threads naturally vary in color like any flower stigmas, they don't appear to be dyed. They do have that rich color shown in the picture and smell and taste great, like I would expect a fresh spice to taste. We made rice with cilantro, salt and saffron as a side dish for dinner. The recipe called for one teaspoon of saffron for two cups of rice, which sounded like a lot because this is slightly compacted but I picked out a few threads at a time, loosely filled a one teaspoon measure and soaked in warm water for a few minutes before preparation (supposedly this should be done for longer). I definitely tasted it in the rice, yum! The smell, the color, beautiful. Maybe a tiny bit more next time but still great and didn't make a huge dent in the two grams which seems like not much but actually it is.I really love tins and I was afraid from a few reviews that I would not get it but I did. I hope that was a temporary issue and I am not just lucky, I want everyone to get their saffron in cute tins! Which by the way are slightly larger than Altoids Smalls tins, but not hinged.
