Is it unfinished and untreated wood?

It is treated, and very nice and smooth. It is a bit slippery for little babes, so I purchased an anti-slide Hippo-gripper at the grocery store to place on the seat. It works very well. The bonus to this highchair is the wooden bar children can place their feet on when they are a bit taller. It keeps their legs from falling asleep.

Does the child slide down in this chair since there is not a vertical bar between the legs?

No the child foes nut slide down. No my kids are 3 years old and 19 month old so they're perfect for this chair. I will not recommend putting a baby because I can see how she/he could slide down.
