Good for Sociology
Used for two of my undergraduate Sociology classes. Very informal and easy to understand.

Actual theory, not a simplistic version.
It's a hard read but also a good read. The theory isn't "dumbed down" and can be intimidating. Theory is hard any way you read it ;)

Great book. Chapter on Critical Theory (The Frankfurt Institute for Social Research) is a bit too abbreviated and seems a little too short and does not contain a full focus on the positive contributions The Frankfurt School has had on society.

a MUST for any "budding" sociologist...
This book has proven to be invaluable for me during my senior year of study in my BA, and now my foray in to graduate school. Appelrouth and Edles provide a concise and easily readable approach to understanding key sociological thinkers and theorists. The combination of both 'Classical' and contemporary theory gives an excellent overview of where the discipline has come from, and where it is going. Each chapter/section is structured in a way that introduces the theorist, orients their perspective and theoretical background, summarizes their major themes, and presents sections from their key writings. So if you are new to theory, or perhaps had a prof that explains things in a way that is "clear as mud," I would strongly encourage you to pick this one up! You will not regret it!
