Quickly reads ID, lists will read many, many microchips but not AVID
This small and lightweight chip reader is great. It picks up the number quickly. The screen is easy to read and large enough to easily see. It is listed as reading 15 digit microchips and not AVID. I am going to keep in my car as I often see strays where I go to walk and it would be nice to help them find their way back home. There is a website that you can find through any search engine (put in the search bar: microchip registry lookup) that will let you know what kind of chip the number is and give you a link to the registry of the chip to contact. I can imagine this would be a great item to give to a rescue group or rescue traansportation member to use and verify the pets. The price was very affordable and luckily it works great.

Easier than expected!
Super easy to use. I had a stray cat outside my house and got it to work no problem. Used the identifier to find their owners. My cats got nervous of the beep when you turn it on, but it's not really an issue.

Easy to use, quick results. Works best for cats and dogs (no result on horses).
This scanner works as advertised for cats and dogs and is super simple to use. Press the button, hold close to the pet (their necks/shoulders for cats and dogs), and receive the result within seconds. The microchip number will continue to display for a few minutes, before the device deactivates itself with a little jingle to conserve battery. Mine came pre-charged, so it was ready for use immediately. If no chip is detected, the display reads "no tag". I work at an animal shelter and was able to scan multiple cats and dogs who recently received their microchips with no problems. The device is much lighter and more compact than some other scanners I'm used to. Very handy! HOWEVER, it did not find anything on a horse who I know for certain is chipped. You might possibly need a more advanced scanner for some (older?) horse chips.

Works great, super price
Easy to use and works perfectly. Successfully scanned chips from homeagain, avid, datamars, and Fi Nano. I am not sure why some reviews were negative, I wondered if some people perhaps were trying to scan between shoulder blades and didn't realize that chips can migrate and to scan around the sides of chest too if initial scan doesn't detect chip. This seems to be quick and accurate and was pleased it still detects chip on my 13 year old dog too. I also like that it comes with a charge cable so you don't have to worry about batteries.

Does NOT work with AVID chips
VERIFIED: DOES NOT WORK WITH AVID MICROCHIPS. I work in animal welfare, and wanted to have a cost-efficient microchip reader to keep on me (in my car or at home). I was aware the scanner may not pick up AVID chips based on other reviews, so I tested the theory. I took to the shelter, and scanned multiple pets with AVID chips, and NONE were detected. I tested it on a few other chip manufacturers, and the chip was read without issue. Still a great priced purchase, but just note you should always have a backup scanner (and not declare the animal without chip) in the event the animal has an AVID chip. I also wish the scanner had a quieter or shorter digital sound it made when turning on and powering off "without activity". It's louder/more obnoxious than other scanners, and scared a few pets.

Great little machine
I bought this to use on TNR cats to check for ownership, and used it on my own cats to check it out first. And BAM! As soon as I got it close to the cats' necks, the reader would go off. Very accurate. I suggest everyone check the number of their pets' microchips as I had a cat where the vet gave me the Microchip number that was off by one digit. Had the cat gotten out, I would have never gotten her back because of the error with the chip number. Nice piece of mind for just a little money. The only negative I can share is that it says you can connect it to your computer and download the microchip numbers you have scanned. It comes with the cord to do this (as well as charge it). I still can't figure out how to download the information, and there was no instruction on how to do this. Still, I would highly recommend this microchip scanner.

Doesn't work properly/consistently
I run a cat rescue and had trouble with this scanner from the start. It would take several tries to pick up the chip number. Also, the numbers are very small. Another reason to dislike. A few weeks ago as I was processing a cat's adoption I scanned her to double check the number against the system and it came up blank. I thought she'd been chipped but figured we'd somehow made a mistake. I told the adopter I'd need to chip her which created a delay for her to go home. Just by chance I checked again using the HALO scanner which is the other type we use. Thank goodness I did that because she was, in fact, chipped. I will never use this scanner again but it is too late to get my money back. An unfortunate waste for an animal rescue. Save your time and money and just get a HALO. It has worked flawlessly for years.

A great and inexpensive option
It immediately picked up my cat’s tag. I wanted a chip scanner as lost pets are super common in my small town, and I was looking for a cheap reader. I used my cat as a test subject, and his Home Again tag showed right up! It doesn’t show brands obviously, but I verified it with his card from the company that had his tag number. Pro tip: add your pet’s tag to a free registry in case they ever go missing!
