Great Camera!
I have had this camera for several months now and had a chance to use it in a lot of different situations. It is excellent! When I first received it there were a number of features I wasn't too sure about but as I use it more the features in question are great. On several occasions I discovered something that I didn't like but when I actually took the time to read the instructions whatever I didn't like was easily changed. It also took a little adjustment for me to use the view finder as it folds out to the side but that feature makes it easy to take photo's in awkward positions and now I wouldn't trade it. I have used the camera to take some spectacular time-lapse photo's of sunsets and night skies. When using it for night photo's of city lights it is possible to take the pictures without a tripod and yet the pictures are sharp. I have no idea how that works, but it does. It also does an excellent job on video. For a camera of this size to have a 30x zoom capability is amazing. One of the features that really appealed to me when purchasing was it's small size as we travel overseas a lot and getting everything in the allotted space is often a problem. The camera does everything that I want plus some. We are very happy with it.

Great Camera!!
Absolutely love this camera. It came in pretty good condition for a refurbished digital camera. Only has minor scratches on the body but other than that it operates great. Which is expected for this camera being years old. The picture quality is really good, and I’ve had no problems with charging/ the battery it came with a cord, and SD card would definitely recommend! My new favorite camera, and was a perfect upgrade from the last cam I had.

The real deal- only camera you may need.
Excellent Camera. I am an early adapter for Cameras. I always carry a camera. I am a Canon DSLR shooter-- D30, 1D, 1D MkII, 5D, 70D. My lenses include 400 f2.8, 200 f1.8, 85 f1.2, 70-200 f2.8, 100-400 f5.6+/-, 100 Macro, 24-70, a sigma 15-20 and probably a few more. My point and shoots used to be canon, but for the past four years have been using Nikon. I have purchased over 10 Nikon S6500s, most of them for less than $100. I am hard on cameras. I go through two or so a year. I also shoot a P510 for its long lens. With the Nikon S9900, I am almost at the tipping point to sell my DSLR. There are very few images that the Nikon S9900 cannot do well. I like the manual settings. I don't shoot raw and don't care its missing. There are three areas the camera lacks- sunsets, fast lenses (for bohke) and multiple fast images for sports photography. Otherwise, this camera pretty can pretty much take any image. I have been waiting for the P990 to become available and I can see my camera bag with only this camera and a P990 for the zoom. I may be ready to sell my 15k+ of glass. I included two images. One is wide zoom of the white house with a secret service officer on the roof and the other is of different secret service officer on the roof at full zoom. What a zoom!!!

not for candid pictures of kids
If you are looking for a camera to grab on the go, leave on Auto, and snap pictures of your kids I would not recommend this camera at all. I was so incredibly disappointed with it I sent it back right away for a refund (thank you Amazon!). I have taken tons of candid photos over the years and was pretty please with how they turned out with my old camera (a Cannon Powershot S3 IS)... It finally was old enough and had some issues I decided it was time to replace it. I was looking for something smaller that I could take along easier, but still wanted the fully articulated screen). I figured digital cameras have come a long ways in the past 9 years since I bought my last camera, and perhaps even the lower end cameras would take better clearer pictures than the one I had been used to. So, it was extra disappointing to spend all the money I did and not have good results... After returning this, I purchased a different camera for half the price (had to settle for a fixed screen) and am quite pleased with the pictures it takes! Pros: Fully articulating screen (which is a nice sturdy one) Size Cons: Awkward to hold Blurs over subject slightly moving Lag in focus, lag for flash, lag to write to memory Etc. I understand that some things can be made better if using different modes and settings, however I wanted a camera that had a good auto setting that I didn’t have to worry about details if I didn’t want to (which I thought would be standard for all point and shoots)... While I enjoy taking pictures of scenery and wildlife, my young children are my main subjects. Even outdoors in good lighting it seemed (almost) if they so much as breathed they would blur while the rest of the photo would be beautiful, crisp, and in good focus. Children move constantly and I want to get good candids of them, not tell them to hold perfectly still so I can get a good picture! Then the lags were so long that I kept missing pictures I wanted to get. All I could do was think of the pictures I took of them playing in the pool a few weeks ago, so many wonderful action shots using only Auto on my old camera, and realizing that this camera didn’t even come close. Low light features: Yes, this camera took better low light pictures than my old one did. Not near as much noise (or grainy)... But beyond my children blurring even worse if they moved in low light, if it was low enough the camera would automatically shoot several pictures and try to put them together for a better picture. I suppose that is a wonderful feature if someone were using a tripod, but it is awful hard to hold perfectly still otherwise and each picture ended up a kaleidoscopic of multiple exposures that were unrecognizable. I personally didn’t like that that was part of the auto mode. So, in short, no, I would not recommend this camera, especially not to those who want something simple to take pictures of children with. I’m happy for those who love it, and perhaps part of my problem has to do with switching from a 9 year old camera that I loved and knew well, to something entirely different, but I wish I had read this review before I decided to purchase it, because I probably wouldn’t have if I did.

DO NOT BUY
Camera is absolutely rubbish, it messed up memories from few family events - DO NOT BUY. We had S8100 before which was great until it failed - the objective wouldn't retract in. We thought this one is the next gen and purchased without much thinking but NO, this is just not like anything else Nikon makes, this is a complete failure. The autozoom is all around the place and the sensitivity is unpredictable so photos are purely random - here and there they are great but very often the picture has visible grain and the lighting has nothing to do with it. Using manual settings doesn't help much, again, it will occasionally do a great shot but there's something wrong with autofocus most of the time. We also have Nikon DSLR and it is great, we have nothing against Nikon as a brand but this particular model is a big time miss. We missed return window and couldn't send it back, so if you purchase this camera, make sure you test it in and out before return period lapses.
