Great Lathe!

I don't know why the others are saying this is a bad Lathe because it's pretty good for the price! Mine came in perfect condition with none of the issues some other people have experienced. I'm new to metal turning but I haven't had any problems so far.

Sub par and not worth trying to improve

Package came early and appeared to be in decent shape. Chuck guard was broke, which seems to be normal for this product. Spent a day fixing Chuck run out was over 5 thousand. Carriage jibs were missing grub screws. Then tried turning threads and it was impossible. Gears that were received cannot be mounted to create thread as the stated combination interferes with the mounts of the gears or drive gears. 1/4-20 thread is impossible because of this. 1mm thread is impossible of well. Didn’t check others after that. Motor spun up quick on every start up and has no torque at all. Easy to slow down and hard to maintain constant speed.

Works

It works for the money. Able to get extremely fine cutting. Did noting that when turning down metal from on end to the other it’s off. When you get close to the final diminsion you really need to only remove half a mil at a time. One set of the jaws it came with will not hold a work piece straight. Customer service was really responsive but in the end they said it can’t hold a work piece that small straight. The work pieces was 3/4 diameter 🙄. The other set of jaws hold everything correctly. Would I buy again on these price points probably yes

Not bad for the money but there are issues......

Pretty much what I expected. Some things are OK, others, not so much. With a lot of tweaking and playing with it, you can do decent work on this machine. If you want a tool you unbox and can machine metal with on day one, probably not this unit. For that, you'll need to spend 10x more than this thing costs. If you want a machine that lets/requires you to pretty much adjust and tune everything, you'll be happy with this. This lathe is more of a project, not a ready to use when you get it machine. Making this work will be a master class in how lathes operate. After you get this dialed in, you will be a better machinist, no doubt. It won't be fast or easy but eventually you can get there. I have a very expensive, smaller lathe that I use to build clocks. That machine runs out of gas when the parts get much larger than 0.5" in diameter. On occasion, I need to turn something larger, up to 1" in OD. I needed a big, rough, not too precise machine to let me hog out large chunks of brass, a few times a month. For that, this is fine. Rather than wear out my nice machine, I wanted something much cheaper and bigger to take the beating.A couple of things: the included 3 jaw chuck is pretty bad, TIR of 0.01", not really usable for metal machining. OTOH, the TIR of the inner headstock taper is pretty good, .0005". The headstock taper is claimed to be MT4. It isn't. It is either MT4.5, Jarno 11 or something else. I haven't figured that out yet. I asked them and the VEVOR folks don't seem to know what it is. The tailstock on my machine is MT2 as claimed. I suggest you get your machine and find out what you've gotten before before you buy any extra fixturing for it. It sounds like these are built in a hurry and any available parts get grabbed, strapped on, and the units shipped out the door. If the specs of a part don't agree with the manual or sales brochure, that doesn't seem to matter too much. As the end user, you can live with pretty much anything you get with enough effort and cleverness but don't buy parts in advance, expecting them to work with your unit. You might end up with a bunch of unusable stuff like I did. You will probably want a four independent jaw chuck. That will let you get a very good TIR if you need it for a part. It will take some time to dial in but you can get there. The self-centering chucks probably will never be better than a few thou TIR. Good enough for some things, not others. For a typical lathe, collets usually are the most precise way to go but until you can figure out what the taper is and can get adapters, that won't work. All in all, I got what I paid for and expected. I am satisfied with the lathe.

Return the defective item and replace it with a new one.

I own a cue repair shop.(Billiard Cues)NO Instructions; NO schematics; NO Nothing!!I am not a machinist. The main reason I purchased this lathe was it is a small lathe with a large Spindle hole at a reasonable price. This one feature allows me to repair shafts and butt handles. Problem is the machine is delivered needing a lot of adjusting without any instructions on how to make them. Even the manual has erroneous information. I was so disappointed I was going to send it back. The gears made a lot of noise. I had no idea how to loosen and line them up. I had no idea how to set the cross slide up. Everything was so tight with no instructions on how to make adjustments. A friend came and lined up the gears which quickly began to run better.I’m still tinkering with it, and watching u-tube video's.I would really like some help from Amazon. Tried to get support from VEVOR and they said I have to get refund or replacement from Amazon. They are considering my repair ticket closed. I will try to copy and paste their response and send it in another review.Received your OK TO RETURN LATHE. NOW I NEED A DATE FOR WHEN YOUR GOING TO PICK IT UP FOR A RETURN AND CREDIT. FROM THERE I PLACE AN ORDER FOR ANOTHER (DIFFERENT) VENDOR LATHE.

good product

the product was as good as I thought it would be the machine tolerances were very good for the price would definitely recommend to a beginner machinist or some. I just want to learn.

Motor Smoked on first use….007” !

The motor smoked the first use. I have a 4 amp WEN that I Cut the same piece at .015” over and over with zero problems. Very sloppy unusable as is, do I have to eat the whole $700 Bucks and hours of trying to tighten up the tolerances?

You have to pay more to get value

There were too many things that were poorly made sand castings, that should have been machined such as the defective mounting for the change gears. It could have been a good value if it had better fitting parts and higher quality control standards,But there were just too many problems binds and hand drilled holes , and there is no easyapparent source of OEM parts or manuals. I never used it, I was justdisappointed with it and returned it.
