Archos 605 WiFi 30GB Digital AV Player

Archos 605 is getting old as a model, but still useful, simple and reliable... it was featured at OldVideoToDVD.com a few years back

First, i did not buy this at Amazon, but I bought it refurbished which makes it cheaper, especially since most add-ons are a necessity. Pros: Good Build, easy interface, 30gb is a lot of space, Tv-out(optional), DVR ability(optional), Web browsing(optional), plays most mp3's, pictures with slideshow, large screen, plays flash games cons : videos need to be converted, TV-Out/DVR/Web Browsing all need extra plugins and/or accessories at additional cost, not many accessories are available locally, flash games are slow, pic files up to a certain res, barely supported by the manufacturer, unable to delete files on the fly This player is good if you are willing to shell out the cash to buy the add-ons DVR dock($60)/mini dock($30) + plug ins(video/browser/etc)($30) + video converter software($0-30) + screen protector($7) + case ($20) = $100 - $150 extra + $150 for the player. For that price you can buy a Zune or even an Ipod touch with the same capacity. What I do like about the player is the bigger screen and the price I got it for, this is good video player which is why a bought it, my converter software converted a 700mb file to 400mb in about 15 min with minimal quality loss, if you buy the software plug-ins, conversion is almost not necessary. also battery life quotes are inflated i got 13 hrs audio or 3.5 hrs video(a battery dock is also available @$50). I would say pass on this one since it is the older model unless you can get it below $110 or so and have some tech knowledge.

Okay, the bad points first. After buying this I had to spend a further £60 to get the software necessary to play movies from DVDs, to get the web browser plug-in and to get a decent case (because the supplied pouch is worthless). I'd also recommend the DVR station for a number of reasons, quicker charging of the 605 being one of them. Now the good points. Fantastic display, way better than the iPod touch. Very easy to use, either with buttons or the touch screen. The web browser (once you've bought it) is excellent. WiFi is easy to set up and works well. Photos are crystal-clear and the slide-show feature is easy to use. Battery life is pretty good. Overall quality of the device is very good.

Wenn man sich diesen Pmp käuft sollte man nicht den Player verfluchen weil er kein Kartenleser hat, sondern sich selbst weil man selbst nicht lesen kann! Auf der Archos website steht und stand auch nie was von einem Kartenleser! Es gibt nur eine 4Gb-Flash edition, die einen kartenleser besitzt! Also ich hab den Player jetzt seit 2 Wochen und bereue den Kauf nicht. Für seine Funktionen ist der Player verdammt billig, deshalb muss man fett draufzahlen, wenn man alle Funktionen benutzen will. Der Archos kommt nämlich mit sehr wenig Zubehör. Deshalb kann man nur mit dem Pc aufladen oder die Fernsehaufnahmefunktion nur mit der sehr teuren Dockingstation nutzen. Das Display des Players ist brilliant. Soundqualitätexperte bin ich jetzt nicht so... Aber man kann schon ganz gut hören mit dem Ding. Das Teil ist ungefähr so groß wie ein Gameboy color (nur nicht so dick) und passt ganz gut in meine Hosentasche. Ich hatte davor den Archos 402 mit welchem ich auch sehr zufrieden war. Deshalb entschied ich mich wieder für einen Archos. Vorallem weil Archos die einzigsten Player macht, die eine Vorwahlfunktion haben, welche ich sehr praktisch finde. Also da kann immer das nächste Lied wählen. Eine sehr gute Verbesserung zwischen des 605 und des 402 ist, dass man Musik hören kann und gleichzeitig Fotos schauen kann. Die Songs kann man jetzt auch bewerten. Das fehlte beim 402. Es gibt aber auch ein paar Verschlechterung: Im kopfhöhrerstecker gibt es kein Video-out mehr. Das ging noch bei der ganzen Generation 4. Das heißt man muss sich erst ein Minidock dazu kaufen, wenn man Filme auf dem fernseher anschauen will. Bei den alten Player musste man einfach nur ein Standart Skatkabel anschließen. Überhaupt finde ich es nicht gut, dass der Usb-anschluss kein normaler Standart USB anschluss ist, wie bei der Gmini-serie. Es gibt auch Widgets für den Archos, also Spiele oder Kalender oder andere Programme. wenn man den Opera-browser schon erworben hat, kann man sich folgende Widgets Gratis runterladen: Adress Buch Taschenrechner Kalender Währungsumrechner Notizen passwortgeschützte Notizen. Einheiten umrechner news reader* Wettervorhersage* *benötigt Internet Verbindung Dann gibt es noch 8 Spiele(alles auf der archosseite): Kartenspiele und Denkspiele (sodoku...) die ganzen Spiele sind ganz nett(außer Golf und Basketball, die sind sehr schlecht). Es gibt anscheinend noch Flashspiele, die man auf dem Archos spielen kann, aber da habe ich mich noch nicht genauer informiert. Das schlechteste an den Widgets ist, dass man nicht gleichzeitig spielen und Musik hören kann. Obwohl ich den Player nicht wegen der Wififunktion gekauft habe, habe ich mir natürlich gleich mal für 30 Euro den Opera-Browser runtergeladen. Dieser kann Videos von Youtube oder so problemlos abspielen, aber das ganz neueste Flashformat kann der Player leider nicht abspielen. Nach Angaben von Archos verhandelt Archos gerade mit adobe und will erreichen, dass der Flashplayer des archos von version 4 auf die neueste updatebar ist Was sehr nützlich ist: Wenn man zu Hause ist, hat der Player mit Hilfe des wifi, wenn man an seinem Pc alles richtig einstellt, zugriff auf alle Dateien die auf ihm gespeichert sind. Man kann also ohne Kabel Filme, die nur auf dem Computer gespeichert sind, auf dem Archos anschauen. Es macht sehr Spaß das touchscreen zu benutzen. Manchmal braucht der Player zu lang zum Hochfahren Also insgesamt ein Superplayer, der allerdings sehr viel teurer wird, wenn man alle Funktionen benutzen will. Wenn man dies tut, hat man den funktionsfähigsten Mp4-player überhaupt. Mein Tipp: Bei Youtube Archos 605 suchen und die Videos anschauen. Das hilft auch bei der Kaufentscheidung. Anhang 15.Oktober: Ganz ehrlich kauft euch das Ding nicht würde ich mittlerweile sagen. Irgendwann geht das Ding kaputt, kauft euch lieber ein gutes Alleskönner Handy von Nokia wie das N96, das den archos völlig ersetzen würde und noch viel mehr funktionen hat. Und wenn man berechnen würde, dass man sich das ganze Zubehör kauft , für den Archos, ist es sogar gleich teuer.

I decided to take a chance with the Archos because I wanted a portable jukebox that, unlike my Creative 30gb, could be edited as well as recharged. The Archos is a potential multi-media circus; through buying extras from their website you could have the internet in your hand as well as a personal cinema, and maybe a tea-service? To be honest, I don't feel the desire to have a cinema, tea-making/satnav apps or the 'net in the palm of my hand - all I want is my music at my fingertips. I've deleted some of the features I know I'll never use and this has freed up over 6gbs extra. So that's at least thirty more albums I could rip or download! Archos software loads on fast and after about three hours of complete charging you can start loading up the player via Windows Mediaplayer, always more reliable and user-friendly than synchronising software exclusive to particular brands. So you can drag'n'drop happily. Volume is controlled from the left side of the play screen menu and sound quality is fine. You can visually build up playlists in a split-screen mode as you play tracks. Navigating between menus is tricky at first but once you understand the system it's easy. The only criticisms I have are that the machine eats power frighteningly fast - I've ordered a docking station - and accessories shown on the Archos site are rather pricey. The docking station is about the only one I think I actually need. Overall, I really like this machine. It's a smart looking brick, slicker-looking than most Ipod-alternatives but worth taking the chance.
