How does one go about configuring one of these switches I have struggled for more than 8 hours with out getting anywhere with it.

Try internet explorer. Or Firefox both those should work pretty good. You have to change your ip to the same subnet as the switch out Of the box then you should be able to remotely administer it. The default ip for the switch is 192.168.2.10 so set your computer ip to 192.168.2.9 with subnet 255.255.255.0 then you should be good to go. Good luck

Does this just take a normal power plug? I brought one off of ebay that did not come with a power cable.
