The art of drawing translates between two languages: the language of the eye and the language of line and shading, color and tone. Through the choices the artist makes, a drawing both depicts its subject and makes a statement about it. Building upon these ideas, award-winning instructional author John Raynes offers a course that begins by showing how to render everyday objects (a chair, a vase) and advances in easy steps to the creation of expressive landscapes, portraits, and figure studies. With exercises for exploring shape and volume, perspective and composition, light and texture, he leads the reader on a journey of discovery in a wide range of media from pencil, charcoal, and pastel to watercolor pencil and ink. Review: A wonderful and inspiring book on drawing - Teaching a variety of college level drawing classes, I'm always on the lookout for new resources and potential texts. This book avoids the academic jargon and art history references and just instructs on how to draw. Full-color illustrated it shows step by step techniques to create a variety of drawings ranging from landscapes to portraits. This is an adult level read for individuals who have some drawing experience and a passion for drawing. I am using this inspiring book as a text for my drawing classes. Even though I have been drawing for over 40 years I'm learning too. Hard to go wrong with this reasonably priced book. Review: Five Stars - Excellent book!

Useful drawing course for the novice
I gave this book four stars because it covered the premis quite well. The author described drawing in a basic way with useful, common day items for visual enhancement. He also used various drawing materials along with watercolor for expression of depth and volume. This book will be a great reference for the novice. I would have liked to have seen more creative aspects of drawing towards the end of the book like shown om the two page spread of using a sketchbook. Perhaps the author could write an advanced, creative book on drawing in the future.

Give this a miss
Did not like anything about this book and did not like his style of drawing at all. Even at 1p + postage I thought it was overpriced!

I didnt like this book, more of a showcase of the authors talents than a book of drawing tutorials! ; (
