Mybe the best player in this price range
I own the Sony UBP-X800M2. I've had it for a few years. For me it is more trouble than it's worth. To be honest I am always adjusting this or that. Well, two days ago decided to go off the beaten path and would not do the things I wanted it to. Mainly, play movies or connect to my WiFi. I have an extensive DVD collection. I am not giving it up until The Second Coming. I do not care for Sony products. Even so, I think they make the best budget DVD players for the price. I thought about getting it repaired which I still may and keep it as a back up. I began an earnest search on the internet for any affordable player that comes with all the bells and whistles my current unit has. What appears to be available are borderline junk or one needs a mortgage just to buy. I searched Amazon because comparison and Rufus is right at my fingertips. I came across the Sony UBP-X700. I tossed it in my cart because it's cheaper than my current player, with only subtle differences. I ordered it yesterday afternoon, and it was at my door at 7:00 AM. Cannot beat that for service. The UBP-X800M2 is supposed to be a higher-end model compared to the UBP-X700. I don't think it is. For me, the picture alone is noticeably crisper and more vibrant than the X800. The X800 is roughly 10" by 17" and weighs around 8.38 lbs. The X700 is 12.6" by 8.5" and weighs around 3 lbs. Weight and size are noticeably different. When you get to the meat and potatoes of the matter they are almost identical players. Both players have the same video resolution of 2160.. They support multiple file types. Dolby Vision and Atmos. Both are 4K Ultra HD. Both have Dolby Digital DTS. Both are easy to use. I may have missed something. But, I've done the research for you and I think the Sony UBP-X700 is a great value for the casual movie hobbyist. It has the sound, the high quality picture we all want with all the bells and whistles. Most of all the price won't beat us up. I can comfortably recommend this item. I still can't believe how fast Amazon got it to my door.

Excellent at first, but there's one major bug... (APRIL. 2022 EDIT: The bug has been fixed.)
(DECEMBER 2021 NOTE: I will provide an update at the bottom of the review.) (APRIL 2022 NOTE: I will provide a second update at the bottom of this review.) ORIGINAL REVIEW: I bought one of these units when I upgraded my TV to a 4K model, and for the most part, it did its job well. My 4K UHD discs look excellent, and even regular Blu-Rays have a nice upgraded look to them when upscaled to my 4K screen. The player typically works well, and has good load-times and is relatively accessible. Even my parents who can't wrap their head around most modern tech can use it. However, there is one big bug that did bring it down a few points for me. That being that certain titles sometimes won't display when you put the discs in. It's happened consistently with several Blu-Ray discs I own. You put them in... and the TV loses the player's signal, so you can't watch the movie. In order to get them to play, you have to eject and re-insert the disc over and over again until it randomly works. (Sometimes it takes up to a dozen times before the disc will display.) As I said, it seems to only happen with certain specific titles, which is kind of mystifying to me. (Ex. My Blu-Ray copy of "Tucker and Dale VS Evil" has this problem every time I try to play it.) It's not the discs... they're in excellent condition and work in other players. So it seems to be a problem with the player. This is a pretty annoying issue, and it's happened enough to become a genuine nuisance. So I do gotta dock the player a few points. All in all, it's a decent player that is unfortunately brought down a few pegs due to technical bugs. I'd still mildly recommend it because it works MOST of the time. Just be aware you may have the same issue I'm having. I'm giving it a 3 out of 5. DECEMBER 2021 UPDATE: It has been a few months now since I have encountered this bug. It was happening all the time until this past summer, when it began happening less and less. And it has effectively not happened at all in over four months. I'm going to assume this was some sort-of bug that got squashed in a software update. Therefore I am upping my score to a better 4 out of 5. If it continues to function this well for a while and I encounter no other bugs, that I'll probably update it to a perfect 5 in the future, because it is otherwise a very good 4K player. APRIL 2022 UPDATE: It has officially been about eight full months since I encountered the software bug with the TV losing the player's signals. I've not had a single issue with it since. Therefore, I am upping my score to a 5 out of 5. As long as your software is up to date, this is pretty much a perfect 4K player.

This thing is BONKERS!!
With the revelation that the bitrate of my 4k streaming library absolutely PALES in comparison to even 1080p Blu-Ray discs, and with the addition of the Samsung S95b display and 5.1 surround finally mounted in my viewing area -- I'm having a physical media renaissance. This began with me pulling out the ol' PS3 for a test drive comparison of how my blu-ray collection would look in comparison to streaming. Spoiler alert: I was immediately taken back by the clarity of motion and details in dark scenes, especially with HDR. The PS3 is a solid (but loud) piece of blu-ray playback kit, but my wife and I decided to pull the trigger and make the jump to 4K UHD discs, which called for a new piece of tech to adorn our entertainment center, and this is the one we chose... It. has. EVERYTHING! All of the HDR10+ support one could desire but in addition Dolby Vision and crystalline 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus/Atmos output for our speakers, it has truly allowed us to realize the full potential of our equipment. The upscaling is amazing as well and has revitalized our prolific collection of blu-ray and DVD films in a way I could have never imagined. It can't magically add detail to the content, but it somehow makes the image sharper and easier on the viewer and closes the gap between Blu-Ray and 4K UHD. It comes with a remote, but it also supported input from my TV remote immediately out-of-the-box, which is fantastic and helps the device meld with our existing TV menus. Also this thing is SILENT. During menus and playback, I haven't heard any fan noises whatsoever, which I'm not sure how they managed. I wouldn't even suspect it was on if it didn't have a small LED indicating that fact. What a value proposition for the home theater!

Excellent product - miserable documentation
Three weeks ago I purchased a Sony Bravia Ultra High OLED 55" TV. It came with no documentation nor comprehendible explanations of the 4 HDMI ports. I then added this Sony 4K Ultra Blu Ray player with the expectation that being all in the family it should be Plug and Play. Documentation on the Blu Ray is better versus almost nothing for the TV. After much tinkering I am now configured with HDMI: 1- FIOS Cable 2- Apple TV 3 -(E-ARC) - Bose TV Sound Bar 4- Sony Ultra HD player. The system tried told me to connect the Blue Ray to HDMI 3 but then the Bose would not work. The system also states HDMI 4 is the input for FIOS but then the Blu Ray is incompatible. All of this involves getting behind the TV and rearranging the thick HDMI ultra high shielded cables. Add to this the Google TV operating system, software and firmware updates, a strong household WiFi signal plus the FIOS interactive setup box and we have moved into the world of System Integration. Messages may appear on the screen from any one of the devices without attribution. In summary the products are good but getting all of them to work together is hardly trivial and taking full advantage of all the features could be the impossible dream. Of course the same issues apply to understanding the features of a modern car, interactive refrigerator or even keeping up with Alexa and its increasingly complex array of features and functions. Maybe we will need AI to handle all this stuff that can be, at times, stressful.

Great 4k Player
Works Great! I own over 200 physical media movies and nearly half of them are 4k. The device is sleek and smaller than expected, which is a good thing. The player can be connected either by ethernet cable or wirelessly. Originally, it came with streaming software like Netflix and YouTube, but after a firmware update all streaming software has disappeared.

Excellent 4K BD player
Bought the Sony UBP-X700M to replace an aging Sony BDP-S185, a dependable and rock steady BD player I had for 10 years. (The BDP is starting to have a hard time reading certain disks). Hopefully the UBP will last as long as my old BDP-S185. The UBP-X700M has good audio output options (like the BDP-S185) that many other manufacturers' models don't have (they only have one output: HDMI). The Sony has a second HDMI audio only port and a RCA mini jack for coaxial digital audio output. I have an ancient analog Panasonic media receiver/amp, so I run the output from the coaxial digital RCA to to my old Portta digital-to-analog audio converter, then to the amp's RCA input jacks. So far so good. I play 4k & HD blu-rays, DVDs, DVD+RWs, DVD-RW, and audio CDs, and the UBP-X700 handles them all. Great picture and sound! I especially like that the player has a “shuffle” track option (randomized track playback) when playing back music CDs and MP3 CDs. The Sony remote controller can be programed to operate other brand HDTVs (On/Off, Input, Volume, & Mute). I am an old timer, I don't stream or use music services. I like my movies, videos & music on physical media - disks: CDs and DVDs. I fully recommend this player.

Nice player ..
love the player, its not hi-end buts its not bargain generic either .. ive gone through several players over the years, mostly to support an extensive dvd and file collection and now we have bluray capability although its not my main use ... my initial feelings after setting it up and exploring its operation is - its simple, it plays most file formats, runs fairly quiet, looks good, footprint on the small side, and the remote works really well not directional like some can be, also 'most' settings are auto detected but a couple requires going into settings which is relatively quick and painless ... it does have some quirks but theyre not serious imo, such as it likes to be stopped before the next operation, it likes the tray closed with the button before play is pushed, it doesnt like to be interrupted with a disk in the tray etc .. all procedure type things, do it how it likes and it doesnt complain .. another thing is the power and eject button on the unit itself are large and right above the usb port - i challenge you to insert or remove a usb without hitting them haha, an extension cable will solve that .. also when playing files off the usb it plays all video formats ive thrown at it with the exception of oddball audio formats .. so, so far so good .. lastly, the manual doesnt list my hisense tv as compatible with the tv/volume controls on the remote, but it is, just do the manual procedure and hold the buttons in turn several seconds until you hit the right one, red i think it was .. finally, at the risk of being preachy i'll pass a general tip along ive learned over the years - dont turn the tv off and leave a player with a disk in it spinning on a menu all night and fall asleep, eject any disks and shut it down, ALL the way down, disable fast start in settings to, itl last longer ..

Maybe I Just Got A Bad One
I was really excited to get this, and it lived up to the sound/picture issues(visuals are excellent-- I noticed a lot of new things in a few movies I have seen many times...), However, it reminds me of a Playstation 2 or something. It looks nice but the power adapter and the cable to your TV(which I know you can replace...)seemed on the cheap end. I liked the controller, and it worked well w/my Sony TV, which was cool. It is any easy set up too. The bad news--constant freezing after I watched 2 movies. Would not rewind or skip to the next chapter. You had to restart the unit, and even then there were still a lot a freezes and little hiccups in the frame rate. The first 2 movies were played perfectly. I even retried the ones that played fine a 2nd time just to make sure it wasn't the disc I was trying to play. But it happened w/the previous discs that had previously played perfectly. I tried a reg blu ray too and it did the same thing. The other thing I noticed is it seems the unit gets very hot after even a 3 or 4 hour run of watching stuff. I had it in a very open space w/nothing over it or around it too. I will prob look at getting one that is a little more costly, as I like the features of the 4K discs. And at least this unit gave me an idea of what they were all about, and I really enjoyed the 2 movies I saw('Bladerunner' and 'The Shining'). Amazing sound and def a better picture quality you really notice. This player lasted a total of 6 hours. I just grew frustrated and hooked up my PS3 for blu-rays and DVD's; it is more than adequate, and it is very solid and reliable. Like I said, I may have gotten a defective one, but was very unhappy w/the overall experience w/this. Great in concept though.

COMPATABILITY ISSUES
I DISLIKE THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO MARRY TO MY LG OLED TV WHEN IT COMES TO PLAY DVD'S. THE TWO DON'T WANT TO WORK TOGETHER WHICH CAN BE VERY FRUSTRATING . THAT SAID WHEN IT FINALLY DOES WORK THE PICTURE AND SOUND QUALITY IS AMAZING

A decent CD, BD, and SACD player
I primarily bought this player to have it as a dedicated audio player with the capability of playing BDs when needed. And while it does that just fine, I was hoping for more quality audio output. The UPB-X700 has only HDMI outputs, one of which is a dedicated audio output, which is one of the main reasons I paid extra for this particular model. However, I was quite disappointed when I compared it to my existing 14 years old Denon DN-C200 Professional CD changer, which I use mainly as a CD transport unit through a coaxial connection. There is no doubt in my mind that the Denon just sounds better when playing standard Redbook audio CDs. As for SACD performance, I compared it to my old PS3 and did not feel that the UPB-X700's dedicated audio HDMI output offered any audible difference in terms of signal quality over my PS3's standard HDMI output. Furthermore, this unit does not like scratched discs at all! It skips like crazy when you have heavily scratched CDs playing, compared to my Denon player from yesteryear, which manages to correct the errors and give you a smoother listening experience. The unit itself is very plasticky and feels very hollow and cheap, but the design, which I find elegant, compensates somewhat for the cheap feel of the unit. Another downside is that this has a separate DC adapter, which I am not a fan of and I feel adds some clutter to an otherwise neat presentation. Otherwise, this is a decent enough player, it's honestly just fine. However, I would opt for the cheaper model that has no dedicated HDMI audio output as this doesn't offer much in terms of quality, and if you have it hooked to an AVR with your TV on, it decides to switch to video HDMI mode and tells you that you have the HDMI cable connected to the wrong output... Painful... One last thing, if you're buying this unit from an international seller, just ensure to take a moment and look at the voltage to make sure it is compatible with your region.
