CARRIE (RIESSUE)

I have no doubt no matter how many you make on this book, no movie will show what happened at Prom night with expected intensity the way King has described in the book. I could imagine the color and sounds of every event written, as if king was haunted by the god of writting when he was writting this book. I read it in 2 days and still don't know when I reached that last page. There are pages towards the end of book where you are not at your normal self and everything is racing inside you to know what happens next or how exactly it happened.

The book about a girl, I guess. She's in high-school and treated horribly. She's an unusual girl, and the daughter of a extremely religious mother who thinks of menstruation as a curse/punishment by God, and breasts as "dirtypillows". In school, she's pranked and teased and laughed at until you're not surprised that she has a psychotic break. And a psychotic break she does have, near the end when she kills a lot of people with her telekinetic abilities. And that's not a spoiler. We find out pretty early on that Carrie kills many people in her highschool. The specific circumstances and what really broke her, not to mention the extent of the harm, is more or less hidden but we get a general idea of what will happen. That's what I was talking about with the format. About a third of the book (maybe more) is in the form of reports, interviews, stories or analysis of the incident. The fact that this is set in the normal world in which telekinetic abilities are not supposed to exist is a topic of major discussion. And I really liked the format. Most of the time, I'm wary of books that use different formats because it's often used as a gimmick rather that something that contributes to the story (like in Everything Everything). But here, the discussions and reports regarding the incident were very interesting. They not only gave us a good study on how people would react to such a thing, but also created a sense of dread, which I'm guessing was the purpose. The story of what happened with Carrie White is a big deal and it was treated that way, but the reports never seemed to keep in mind the fact that Carrie was just a young girl, a human being, and not a thing that happened to people. That's exactly how stuff goes down in real life and I like that King understood and portrayed that. Also, Carrie's perspective was definitely enlightening. That and the reports and stuff I mentioned were my favourite part of the novel. The rest, the perspectives from other people, I couldn't really get in to. Especially Chris, who you could call the "villain" of the story. Her character just didn't click with me. Another thing I didn't love about the book was the street and shop names. I get that, with King, the towns his stories are set in are just as important as the people, but the constant telling of what avenue or street we were on got confusing and became a hassle. I also thing King may have overdone it with the extent of bullying that goes on in school, even with teachers involved; though I did like the principal. But maybe the severity was necessary for the end result. Also, I don't know what went down in American school in the 70s so... I can't really say for sure. Overall, this was a book that was very different from what I was expecting. It was very interesting. I liked seeing the different angles from which the incident was viewed. And the fact that this was King's first novel... safe to say that I'm looking forward to read more.

First few pages were quite difficult to follow as it’s one of the classics, am used to the newer/recent writers styles. But after few pages, I could feel the chills. Also my heart goes out to Carrie, kinda sad. Ufff her mum 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ve watched both old & remake Carrie movies, but this novel is more descriptive & the characters are emphasised. My first Stephen King’s Novel. Added few more to my collections, can’t wait to explore of his stories. Finished in one sitting, although re-read the pages, fast-paced thriller.

Absolutely worth every rupee spent on this hard cover.

Stephen King has a unique writing style. He does not seem to tell a story in a linear fashion. Carrie also goes back & forth in time. At some places, the book grows on you, while at others, you lose track of what's going on. A good read, nevertheless.

Carrie is Steve King's first published novel and it's hard to believe that it is one of his earliest works due to it's content and the quality of writing. Carrie White, the lead character is among my favourite King creation and I love it how King worked well on the character development aspect in the novel. Carrie, a socially outcast girl, is often bullied at school, probably because of her family background. Apart from getting bullied at school, she had to face her over protective mother Margaret White's torture (be it mental or physical) who is an extreme religious fanatic forcing her conservative, irrational and absurd beliefs on her. .Following her rampage and her going on killing spree to all the wrong doers with the power of telekinesis. I really do have all my empathy for Carrie for the things she faced that were truly unfair and mean. This novel is horrifying and amusing, but more than that it is depressing.

元々ブライアンデパルマの映画版が大好きで、一番好きなはホラー映画を聞かれれば必ずキャリーと応えているくらい。でも改めて原作を読んで、映画は映画で良かったけどとてもじゃないけど及ばないなぁと思わされてしまうような面白さと驚きがありました。映画がキャリー自身に凄くスポットを当てていたのに対して、小説はどちらかというとSue Snellに感情移入するような、キャリーを客観的に描いている感じ。だからこそ結果的に街一つを再起不能にしてしまう程の強大なパワーを持ちながら子供のようにママに助けを乞いつづけるキャリーの哀れな姿やぐちゃぐちゃの心情がSueを通して痛いほど伝わってきます。そしてそんなキャリーを助けることができない無力さにやるせなくなります。プロムの虐殺だけではキャリーの怒りは収まらなかった。そんな彼女を産んでしまった差別まみれの環境に苛立ちすら覚えます。 スティーブンキング作品を英語で読んだのは三作品目なのですが、今作に限らず具体的かつ捻ったような表現方法が多いしキリスト教関係の見たこともない単語が結構出てきて結構難しかった。これに比べるとシャイニングは結構簡単に思えるかも。 まだスティーブンキングは10タイトルくらいしか読めてないけど、映画が原作を超えてると感じた作品は一つもないので、映画だけを観て終わってしまう人たちが多いのは本当に勿体無い。映画でストーリーを知ってしまっている人も是非読んでみてほしい。

It was like love at first sight when I first picked up this novel at the age of thirteen, loving the front cover of a girl with blood dripping down her face. I was attracted to it immediately and it would be a love affair that has lasted fifteen years. I had just lost my dad and was completely depressed. Within the first few lines of this debut novel by my all-time favourite write Stephen King, I immediately forgot all my troubles and concerns and was engrossed within the story of the "ugly duckling girl" that was tormented by her peers, tortured emotionally and physically by her religiously demented mother and had a rare gift - the gift of telekinesis - that allowed her to move objects with her mind. I felt sorry for Carrie and suddenly started wishing that I had a gift like this, but the genius of King is the way he is able to twist this wonderful rare talent into the ultimate nightmare. Carrie is a simple story of how a girl who has no friends, suddenly discovers the idea of women growing up and discovering her first period, a trauma for her brought on by the fact that she believes she is dying, as well as the fact that her peers believe this is just a funny joke that they can use to abuse Carrie with. This is the catalyst that starts the whole horror of what the novel Carrie really is. Through the use of false interviews and made-up articles written by King himself, the reader learns the true horror of what this girl possesses and what she has to go through to get to the point of prom night where she will use her power to enact vengeance on those that have tortured her. The real horror is more so for the reader who is drawn into the entire drama, waiting to see what happens, wondering just where the horror will end - the way in which Carrie is treated both by her peers and her mother, and what she is forced to endure is probably more horrific than the way in which she enforces her power on the towns-people. Carrie, the book, has often been criticised by a lot of readers as being very raw and only showing the tip of the ice berg towards King's talent. Yes, this is a debut novel and King is still finding his way through his talent, but the rawness and naivetés is what makes this one of King's most popular and enduring novels that bounds the reader under some sort of spell in which they cannot put the book down. I have read this numerous times and I never get tired of it. It shows King as a great story teller who really knows how to engage his audience and make them want to come back for more. I first read Carrie fifteen years ago and I have never looked back since. Over the years I've discovered new books by King and discovered his talent doesn't dim but grows and he is one of those rare writers where if you were to read the same book again, it will become better for you rather than tedious. I do not consider Carrie to be the best of his novels - how could it be with all those other works of genius he has written, but it is one of my favourite and most treasured as it was the first of his novels that I read; I read it when I was going through the worst period of my life and it got me through some really bad times. It is a fantastic story with a great heart, a well written tale of sweet revenge and consequence. It is one of those books that a lot of people can identify with as it gives a clear understanding of what school is really like, both for the victim and the bully. I cannot rave about this novel enough. It is a truly wonderful book and if you haven't read Stephen King before, this is a good place to start. If you have read him before, you are in for a treat and will not be disappointed - if you have read this novel before, read it again. It's just as good, if not better, the second time. It's the debut of one of the most talented writers who has ever put pen to paper. It made me become a fan!
