Can slice and grate food as well as the large processors and is much more convenient.
I bought the Presto Professional SaladShooter in January, 2010, and it still looks and works like new. At the time, I also purchased 2 more cones that offered additional slicing and shredding sizes. I have used this SaladShooter often in the last 5 years, primarily for shredding large quantities of cheese that I freeze for later use. Although my primary use is to shred cheese, I have also used it to shred cooked potatoes for hash browns and for slicing vegetables. It has done a wonderful job on everything I have used it for. I have found it very easy to clean, but I have always washed the parts by hand. The cutting cones come out, and can easily be washed and dried. The chute unit comes off of the base for easy cleaning. A couple of the reviews have mentioned that food is caught outside of the cutting cones, and also gets stuck in crevices. I am a bit of a kitchen appliance junkie and have a few appliances that can be used for slicing, shredding, etc. including the attachments for the Kitchen Aid mixer, a Cuisanart food processor, and a couple of Ninja Kitchen Systems. Some use the cones as this one does, and some use blade discs. I have found that every single one of them leaves some chunks of food that isn't processed with the rest, and the blade systems generally have food sitting on top of the blade that isn't processed. Let's face it - even with a hand shredder you end up with a piece that can't be shredded unless you want to add a portion of your fingers to the food. All things considered, the Presto SaladShooter can do anything that the larger processors can do, but takes much less storage space. Since it is a smaller, hand-held unit, you will be more likely to use it more often than a larger, heavier unit that has to be moved from the back of a cabinet. UPDATE 12/02/16 I have had this Presto SaladShooter for almost 7 years, and it's still going strong. Of the many appliances I have, the SaladShooter does the best job of shredding cheese with the least waste. UPDATE 08/04/25: At this point in time, I have had this Presto SaladShooter for 15 years, and it still works as well as the day I bought it. The one I have is in white and is the same model as shown on this page. I still use it for shredding and slicing a number of veggies, potatoes, and cheese. Since it is so easy to clean, I just wash it by hand. Really, how many appliances sold today last and still work for 15 years!! I do have a couple of large food processors that I use when processing large batches, but this is my go-to appliance whenever I have a smaller amount of food to process. I hope this review was helpful for you.

Why didn't I buy this years ago??
Living in a small apartment, I try to be selective about the gadgets that inhabit my kitchen. They have to be things that I use regularly and genuinely make my work in the kitchen easier. To that end, my "major" appliance-type purchases are a Vitaminx blender, and a stand mixer. The Vitamix let's me do a lot of prep-type work in it, I can do course chopping and such if I don't care if the pieces are uniform. Everything else, including shredding cheese, I'd been doing by hand. I cook a lot and we LOVE cheese (and don't like the wood pulp that they coat pre-shredded cheese in), and it was very time consuming. I'd been considering a food processor, but I didn't want the extra bowl to wash, and in part that would overlap with what my Vitamix does for me, so I didn't think that was necessary. After some research, I settled on a SaladShooter, and I couldn't be happier. Use: This thing shreds cheese like nobody's business. I take out a block of cheese, cut it into a few chunks and feed it through... and boom. a big pile of cheese. The shredder that comes with it is a larger shredder, I'm considering picking up another one for more fine shredding. This one is about the same size as the big bags of mozzarella that you can get at Walmart, the big thick shreds. Which is a great size for hashbrowns, too. I've shredded everything from hard Parmesan to cheddar to room temperature mozzarella with no problems (which is almost impossible by hand), though I'd really recommend against using warm mozz - it does a much better job when it's cold, of course. It does get thin slices of unshredded cheese stuck around the shredding cone, but this happens when you shred it by hand, too, and I think it gets more of the cheese shredded than doing it by hand does anyway. We use a lot of shredded cheese, so after I go grocery shopping I just get this thing out, shred a few blocks, divide it up into 1 cup sections in a freezer sandwich bag, label, and stick in the freezer. Usually use some right there to make mac and cheese sauce to freeze, and that cuts down meal prep and dishes for later. The other cones are great for slicing sweet or regular potatoes or zucchini for roasted or fried potatoes, slice cucumbers for salads or sandwiches, slicing fruit or veggies to dehydrate (Homemade apple chips? Amazing!), shredding broccoli stems and cabbage for slaw, etc. Clean up: There are inevitably some unshredded/unsliced bits that get stuck in and around the cone and in the little plastic divots and locking ring. I just take the ring off, slide the cone out, wipe all the leftover bits with a damp paper towel. then the cone and locking ring goes into the dishwasher, and I clean the body with a soapy cloth. Fast and very simple. Misc. comments: I do wish that it had some sort of storage case to keep all the cones and parts together. The cones keep getting separated as I move things about in my cabinets. I probably need to just start keeping it all in a big tupperware container or something. Always always always unplug the unit before taking the cone out. The on/off button sticks out a bit from handle, and is on the opposite side from the cone and I once got to talking and got careless while I was starting to change it and bumped the button against a nearby bowl on my counter, turning the unit on. Luckily I hadn't removed the ring yet, but it was a good reminder on kitchen safety. It's a bit on the loud side, but worth the noise, in my opinion. The thin slice cone is grey, making it easy to tell apart from the thick slice one, which is nice. The shape (long and relatively thin) allows me to choose whether to store it sideways in a drawer or upright in a cabinet - great for small kitchens. Purely cosmetic, I know, but I wish it came in black, every other appliance in my kitchen is black and this stands out like a sore thumb. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this purchase. It fills the exact need that I'd been missing, saves me SO much time in the kitchen, is effective and easy to clean.

Great for your style of chips
Bought this in 2010 and it still works as expected. It is fast so be alert. I also got another cone for thicker potato chips. Would be great if there was a spiralizer feature. You get this and save time and energy

I'm happy with my purchase
This works quickly and really effectively when you select the right blade. I found that the fine shredder is perfect for parmesan cheese. Unfortunately, that shredder is not included. You have to buy it separately on the manufacturer's website. It, and the thin slice blade, should be included or at least available as an option. I like this better than the manual rotary shredders that never seem to stay suctioned to my counter.

Easy Prep for Cooking Healthy
I've been trying to incorporate more whole foods in our meals. However, slicing up tons of veggies can be quite time consuming. I ordered the Presto 02970 Salad Shooter a few days ago, received it with free 2-day shipping (thank you PRIME!), and couldn't wait to rip it out of the box and get started. I started with some small, English cucumbers. I was able to put about 3 in the chute at once. I used the thinnest slicing attachment and got super-thin, almost paper-thin slices for a dish. Used the larger size slicer for the onions to get those a bit thicker. All of this was done in a matter of one minute or less! Took longer to wash and slice the ends off the veggies than the actual Salad Shooter took to slice them. So this dish that would normally take me 10+ minutes to make, took only 2 from start to finish! WOW! The Salad Shooter just shot them right onto a plate. Kinda fun to use, actually! Next, I moved on to slicing some beets super thin to make beet chips baked in the oven. Amazing! This gadget worked SO GREAT! I cut the large beet into 3 long chunks and sliced up enough beet chips for a party in less than a minute. Can't wait to try it on other fruits/veggies to make healthy, homemade snacks. The slicer/grater blade holder turns and comes off so easily. I just rinsed mine under warm water with a drop of dish soap. Came clean without any scrubbing. I'm sure you'd need a little more work to get the grater clean if you used it with cheese, but with fruits and veggies, it just rinses clean. The motor section should be fairly difficult to get dirty, but is easy to just wipe clean. The power cord is plenty long, too. Perfect length without being in the way. I haven't tried the cheese grater yet, since I just received the Salad Shooter yesterday, but I know others have said it works beautifully for that. Can't wait to try that out, too. I have started a little gardening. I hope to be able to use this gadget to help me can and preserve the fruits (and veggies) of my labor! One bonus that I want to tell everyone about is that you can get this Salad Shooter for almost half the price of the regular one by going to the Warehouse Deals. There's even a link on the description page for this one. I was able to get it super cheap. There is another version of the Salad Shooter, but with fewer attachments. I would go ahead and get the 02970 model just so you have everything you'll need and won't regret not getting the extra attachments.

Love the blade choices
So much better than the smaller model we had before. Great choice of cutters. Makes quick work shredding or slicing.

Relief for my arthritic hands
I had one of these when they first came out, and we wore it out. I didn't realize they were still around until I saw them on Amazon. With Rheumatoid Arthritis taking over my hands and life, it is no longer a pleasure being in the kitchen, its more of a job. I dread mealtime and its sad. I saw this but the price was beyond my range because I am on SSDI ($around 60.00), then I saw the other Prime Prices, in the warehouse. New but possibly repackaged, returned due to a slight blemish on the product that doesn't affect the use. In my price range and with my Swagbucks Gift Cards it only cost me $15.00. Note: We can't even find the blemish and my 19 year old tried because she delights in seeing just how picky some people can be. The blemish must really be slight if its there at all. It was delivered on Saturday and we finally used it last night. I remembered from last time to freeze block cheese for at least 1/2 hour, but not more than 45 minutes before grating it. And a clean up tip, if you're not going to be able to clean the cheese grater immediately - stick it in the freezer after cleaning out the bottom part, or you'll have gummed up cheese. If you are making hash browns shred potatoes, onions, and cheese into one bowl, mix them up, then what I do is put them into a jelly roll pan and bake until the potatoes are soft, and cut into individual sized portions, and freeze them for quick meal add ons or snacks. I always skip the salt, add fresh garlic, pepper and a bit of chili powder. You can figure out what works best for you. One thing we really like is fried potatoes but we don't make them more than once a month because of the fried part. Getting them browned up on the bottom, while soft is just not possible with slicing them the way they need to be, slicing them with my hands. Put them through this using the thin slicer, and they came out so nice, had to use less than 1 tablespoon of oil, grated an onion in with them and they were nice and crispy brown on the bottom, and then we grated Wisconsin sharp cheese on top, a little bit of cheese goes a long way with this, and that was dinner. My daughter had second helpings and then thirds, it was amazing for her. She is very sensitive to noise, and it is loud for her, for me it is not an issue. It works, it doesn't hurt my hands and I love it. Even if you don't have arthritis there is the time saving, and the economical savings to consider. Compare the cost of grated cheese to block cheese. Yes you can grate with a hand grater, but can you go through a block in less than 10 seconds? This does. Then you can flash freeze it in individual serving sizes if you want - and the fact that it looks like you're getting a whole lot more than you are getting, it works well for stretching the food dollar, another important consideration for us. If you know someone who has arthritis, is looking to do the freezer cooking that's so popular, gardening, and wants to put away things in the freezer this will save them time and money. I'm glad that I bought it, I love it and I highly recommend it. Now if I could just get it to cube potatoes for potato salad it would be perfect. Have a great day and thanks for reading the review. Excellent shredder! Great for salad making!
I bought this originally to make salads. I'm tired of buying the plastic bags with the carrots and radishes in them and have it spoil in 2 days. So I bought this. I still slice the lettuce by hand but everything else gets shredded or sliced into the salad bowl. I found out some members of the family do not like radishes at all, so sometimes I slice or shred each vegetable into plastic containers and keep everything separate. The lettuce is still in the bowl and everyone picks what they want in their salad: grated carrots, sliced mushrooms, sliced radishes, sliced cucumbers, shredded cheddar cheese, etc. I am finding that having a salad on a daily basis is much easier with this device. It cleans very easily; just handwash or place in dishwasher (top rack). I buy cheddar cheese in bulk at a warehouse club and shred half into a plastic container. This methods works very well in saving money and you have real shredded cheese without the powder stuff that you get in a bag at the store. The professional size does allow you to shred a whole potato into a skillet very easily. I bought the fine grater attachment from Presto to grate carrots and apples into cake mixes or other recipes in order for the younger children to eat more vegetables. I don't like to steam carrots, puree them, then add them to a recipe to be cooked a second time. This is a great way to sneak in veggies without a child protesting and without having to pre-cook and puree the vegetable. It is very hard for a person to pick out the finely shredded zucchini and carrot from a meat and rice dish. I looked up a popular "salad" cake recipe using a yellow cake mix with shredded carrots, apple and zucchini. I used 1/2 cup of olive oil in place of eggs with the shredded apple, carrot, and half a zucchini with great success. The cake was very moist. I haven't cut my hands with either of the cones. Note that when you go to the Presto website the grey cone for slicing is the same that comes with this boxed set. I didn't know that, so I now have two cones that are for thin slices. I do use both the regular shredding cone and the fine shredded cones alot. I haven't shredded cabbage yet with this. I did slice half an onion and it did a great job of slicing it thinly. I don't regret this purchase. Hope it lasts longer than the two year warranty. I love it!

Excellent workhorse for the kitchen
We bought this for our catering company and it gets used many many times per day, everyday. There has been absolutely no issues with dullness, breaking, motor not keeping up. We've had it for over 2 years now and it just keeps on going without fault. It's so easy to take apart and clean. I bought 2 more, 1 for myself and 1 for my daughter-in-law.
