Advice from a recognized master penman how adults can improve letterforms, legibility, legibility and make written language both fun and expressive. Unlike traditional primary grade handwriting manuals that seek to introduce the basic techniques of written language to young students, The Art of Cursive Penmanship presents the subject of handwriting as a valuable and spontaneous skill for the adult. In this context, it remains an intimate ability of communication and expression; a personal asset for life. By internationally recognized master penman, Michael R. Sull, The Art of Cursive Penmanship focuses on practical self-study techniques designed to accommodate anyone's personal or professional schedule. With determined and consistent use, the daily application of these methods will result in progressive improvement of letterforms, legibility, letter spacing, creating one's signature, the appearance of an individual's penmanship, and the physical action of handwriting through proper posture, correct use of hand and arm muscles, paper position, and a comfortable speed of writing. Recommendations are also offered on the most efficient writing instruments to use, so that handwriting becomes a pleasant activity to be enjoyed, rather than an action merely to be effected. Review: Handwriting, penmanship as art, craft and beauty. - I am stunned. I'm not sure what to say about this 'book', simply because it is so much more than a 'book'. It is a binder of writings that represent the life's work of generations of people that love the hand-written word. The exercises demonstrate techniques of turning scribbles into art. Reviews that dismiss the examples of poetry and love letters are missing the point ... this hand writing book is promoting handwriting as art. Curves, ovals, and straight lines of beauty and self-expression, including emotions. Love it! I have ordered and returned other penmanship books, including some that thought sarcasm would be a good teaching technique. Not. Give me this binder, please. Review: Amazing Penmanship Book! - This book is amazing. I’ve complained that I didn’t know how to write cursive in a legible manner for years! I was taught the basics in third grade, but even in my thirties, my cursive looked adolescent. After reading the (very few) pages of chapters, I pinpointed several details I either forgot about, or never learned. Today, my first day of doing 2 lessons, I pulled out an old journal and began to practice. I was amazed! My writing ALREADY looks like an adult’s handwriting and is legible! I was so excited I pulled out some fountain pens I inherited, and realized I COULD write with them thanks to the proper education from this book. I would recommend investing in good copy paper if you want to use a fountain pen. I would not write in the book practice pages, but simply make copies. It suggests not writing on a pad or in a notebook (to specifically practice penmanship.) My copy paper was on the lower end, and my fountain pen feathered quite a bit. But with better copy paper, this was not a problem. I also read a review that said the book contained a bunch of irrelevant information on this history and how to write. These couple “chapters” are a couple pages in length and not excessive. I found them to be helpful. The chapters on writing posture, how to hold the paper, and the writing zone are essential. 95% of this book is practice pages. The “lessons” are merely a box with a to-do list; not reading 20 pages before you write. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. You can absolutely have amazing penmanship with practice of 30 minutes a day!

Great Practice!
I really like this book! It has a nice sturdy cover and really thick pages. I'm assuming the thick pages are so that you can use a fountain pen and it won't bleed through. I haven't tried that yet but they are very thick. I saw a review that says it doesn't start teaching you anything until after the first hundred pages but starting on page 11 it gives you practice to write each letter. You get to practice all the lowercase letters and at the bottom of each of those pages it gives you words that you can make with the letters you've learned to build on your skills as you learn more. It goes from there onto uppercase and some drills to really get your handwriting consistent. I thought that was very helpful. The letters start out big and get smaller later in the book so you can focus on form and then improve your precision with smaller letters later on. There are plenty of practices and I think they're helpful so I'm very happy with this purchase

Useful, but most pages are copybook sheets.
I've met Michael Sull many times at pen shows, including having a table next to his one year in San Francisco. It's amazing to watch his calm hand and zen-like demeanor create beautiful calligraphic-art while surrounded by the chaos and noise of the show. I (and probably you) are not him..... This books is not about calligraphic-art, it's about practical handwriting. Why learn connected cursive handwriting? I think every way you communicate - handwriting, printing, typing, talking, etc... results in a different way of thinking. Not better, not worse, just different. Consider each communication path another tool in your "mental quiver" - the more choices you have, the better your thinking. Quoted from his Authors Note: " Much of this book's content has appeared in my previous work American Cursive Handwriting which I wrote for primary-grade students......this book is focused on the adult....if you follow the suggestions outlined in this book and dutifully practice every day, you surely will not fail." And so, the bulk of the book - maybe 2/3 of the total space - is about practice, with practice sheets for you to fill in. There is a lot of interesting content, but this is sort of a one-time book. After you do all of the exercises it's "used-up". If that's what you are expecting, than it's the book for you - you will get nowhere just reading about handwriting, it's a manual and muscle skill. Mine just arrived today. I saw a number earlier comments about the construction of the book. It's spiral bound, and people complained that the pages were punched in such a way that they were stuck together and tore if you separated them. My copy had none of these problems - no pages were stuck together at all. From that perspective the book was perfect. Why four stars? I guess I think it should have been pointed out more clearly that you were mostly buying blank fill-in worksheets. The word "workbook" is never mentioned, at least at Amazon. Of course, if you want to learn you need to practice. But a small number of different worksheets are replicated many times in the bound book. A set of these could either copied by the user, or downloaded and printed, and re-printed. The book would have been 1/3 the size, and could be re-used by reprinting the sheets. Just because you want to learn handwriting doesn't mean you have to give up modern technology. After I do my dutiful practice for a while, I will see if I can overcome the damage caused by getting a "C" in my 3rd grade handwriting class. Maybe I will come back and raise my rating then. My criticism is minor - if you want to learn handwriting, buy the book, and practice..practice.. practice. .

Very large and well written.
Very large and nicely written book on penmanship. I have looked through and had already been given some of the practice lessons from an instructor. She said this book will allow me to become more proficient with my penmanship. Lessons are clearly stated and easily followed.

Stupendo

Michael R. Sull „The Art Of Cursive Penmanship“, A Personal Handwriting Program for Adults
