This magical beginning of the popular Phoebe and Her Unicorn comic strip series introduces the unlikely friendship between Phoebe, a clever, quirky girl with a big imagination, and Marigold, a glamorous, self-absorbed unicorn who gradually shows her just how special she really is. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR! “Phoebe is a remarkably real little girl, as bright and imaginative as Bill Watterson’s Calvin , as touchingly vulnerable as Charles Schulz’s Charlie Brown . .. Simpson is that good, and that original.” —Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn When nine-year-old Phoebe accidentally skips a rock into the face of a unicorn, she doesn't expect to make a lifelong best friend. But that's exactly what happens when she meets Marigold Heavenly Nostrils—a magical, endlessly confident unicorn whose vanity is matched only by her sense of humor. Together they navigate school, friendships, imagination, family life, mythical creatures, and the everyday adventures of growing up. In this first collection of Dana Simpson’s beloved comic strip series, the bond between precocious Phoebe and self-absorbed but kind Marigold grows into a true friendship. Along the way, Phoebe deals with the usual burdens of childhood (cruel classmates, gym class, piano lessons) and some unusual ones (magic hair, candy-breathing dragons, and the legendary Shield of Boringness). Witty and vividly drawn in full color, this charming series is perfect for young readers ages 8-10 and fans of imaginative stories. The first full-color comic collection in the bestselling Phoebe and Her Unicorn series A funny, heartwarming friendship between an imaginative girl and a hilariously self-absorbed unicorn Perfect for ages 8–10, reluctant readers, and fans of graphic novels and comic strips Blends school, family, fantasy, magic, and humor into relatable everyday adventures An excellent choice for readers who love Calvin and Hobbes, Dog Man, and whimsical middle grade comics Meet the unicorn best friend readers have fallen in love with and start the adventure from the very beginning. Review: great - Amazing book and the rest of the series is also funny and interesting. I very much enjoyed reading this book Review: Excellent book, I keep going back to reread it! - Phoebe and her Unicorn is an ongoing newspaper comic, so this is just the first in a long series of books that is still being written, the latest as of this comment is volume #17 with volume #18 up for preorder. When I first stumbled upon this comic strip I immediately fell in love with the characters. Phoebe is a girl with a delightfully weird and quirky personality, who becomes best friends with the unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils through chance, and the comic is mostly about their quite believable and wholesome friendship, as well as the wacky hijinks that result from Marigold introducing Phoebe to some facet of unicorn culture. Other notable characters include Dakota--the stereotypical popular girl who is secretly kind of nice beneath her callous exterior, Prunella the Queen of the Goblins, Lord Splendid Humility--a unicorn who is so humble that he hides in bushes and goes through ridiculous lengths to conceal his splendidness, Todd--a miniature dragon that breathes candy and speaks only in 'Rar's, Phoebe's parents, and Max. I can't recommend this book series enough. Although it's targeted mainly toward young girls, I (an adult man) personally found it to be hilarious, wholesome, imaginative, and heartwarming, and the other members of my family I have introduced to it have all agreed. The only thing I suggest is, you should probably spring for the boxed set of volumes 1-4, I went through the first book in like, an hour and had to go back on desertcart right away to get the next few of them.

My daughter won't stop re-reading this book series!
We discovered this book series through a free book prize from a summer reading program. My 9-year-old daughter devoured the first book and has read the entire series. She is halfway through re-reading the book series. She loves that the books make her laugh. I appreciate the great vocabulary in the books. My daughter has a really hard time putting these books down for anything we want her to do. I can't believe I have to sternly tell my daughter to stop reading to get ready to go to an appointment or wherever it is we need to go because she has such a hard time putting these books down. I used to say, "Honey, put the iPad away, it's time to go." Now it's, "Sweetheart, book the 'Phoebe and Her Unicorn' book away, we have got to leave now. This is the highest compliment we can give. We hope the author will continue to publish more books soon.

Fun books!
I bought this book and the following 6 in the series for my niece. (I found books 5-7 in a book store- which were all they had... then went and found 1-4 here on Amazon.) I haven't read them myself but noticed they had a glossary in the back for kids which I thought was pretty cool. My sister told me my niece laughs out lout when she reads them, so I am guessing they are pretty good!

I can't say enough good things about Phoebe and Her Unicorn
Phoebe and Her Unicorn is charming, witty, clever, and original. Dana Simpson's enchanting and warmhearted comic strip has brought me back to reading the comics. Phoebe and Her Unicorn tells the story of nine-year old Phoebe and her best friend Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, who is a unicorn. These two very different beings from very different backgrounds delight in each others company and accept each other just as they are, flaws and all. The strip was formerly known as Heavenly Nostrils, and was only available online through GoComics.com. It is now nationally syndicated in over a hundred U.S. newspapers. When the comic went into syndication in early 2015, Ms. Simpson went back to the beginning of the story so those unfamiliar with the strip could catch up, but some changes have been made. This book, and it's sequel Unicorn on a Roll, allow readers to read the strips as they were originally written and also lets fans of the new syndicated strip to get caught up. I can't say enough good things about Phoebe and Her Unicorn. Also, Peter S. Beagle, author of the classic fantasy novel "The Last Unicorn," and screenwriter for the 1982 animated feature of the story wrote the forward to this book. How awesome is that? Btw, for those who don't get the strip in their local papers, you can still read it on GoComics.com. Fans will definitely want to add Phoebe and Her Unicorn and Unicorn on a Roll to their home libraries.

Absolutely brilliant - very popular with both boys and girls in our family
I bought this for my 7 year old niece, who really enjoys it, but the humor is just a tad above her level (but it's good stuff for encouraging discussion). However it has quickly become a favorite of her brother (age 10) and my 9 and 8 year old sons (so much so that they'll stay up late reading it together with a flashlight - laughing the whole time). They've moved on to the second book and can't wait for the third one to come out. I've read a bit of it as well and it's absolutely brilliant. Like all really good "kid books" some of the writing is above the targeted level. In my experience kids thrive on that and it encourages them to stretch. It certainly helps that it's really, really funny. I would absolutely encourage you to buy this for any girl or boy in your life who is reading at or above the 4th grade level. Even teens would enjoy this - it's just that good.

great book and series
very nice book. my second grader loves it and read all the books in the series. For those mentioning the name calling, it is a minor part of the book but in my view the book provides an opportunity for kids to learn how to deal with it and why they should avoid it. In the context of the book, it is clear that it is not a good thing so it can help kids learn how it affects others. the book is witty and my shy kid with a sense of humor has really enjoyed it, re-reading it more than once.

A Girl & Her Unicorn
This comic is about Phoebe and her new friend, a unicorn named Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. Marigold Heavenly Nostrils! Really, that is all you need to know to purchase this comic. Just love that funny and clever name! This is a comic book series for grades 4 and up. I read this as part of a reading challenge to read a comic written and illustrated by the same person. This is apparently a syndicated comic now available in book form. There are multiple books in the series. Phoebe is in 4th grade and the other kids think she is a nerd. The most popular girl calls her names like Princess Stupidbutt. Phoebe is throwing rocks in a pond when she hits Marigold by mistake. Marigold grants her a wish. Phoebe wishes for Marigold to be her best friend. The rest of the book tells of their adventures and how other people react to Marigold. I am not a big reader of comics. As a child I preferred a book to a comic. However, this is really well done. The drawings are cute and the characters display a lot of emotion. The text is sweet and funny. The humor will appeal to both adults and children, who will understand the narrative on different levels. This is a story of friendship and both Phoebe and Marigold have a lot to teach each other. The first book leaves me interested to learn how the relationship develops between Phoebe and Marigold. I think this would be a fun book to read with a child. I read this as an ebook, and the illustrations looked good, typically three to four panels to a page. And a final time: Marigold Heavenly Nostrils!

Keeps you reading till the end
This book is packed with funny scenarios featuring Pheobe and her friend. Pheobe is a bit crazy (in a fun way) and adventurous. When she faces a problem, she seeks help from her friend, a magical unicorn, who is full of herself and sometimes takes things too literally which is what makes the book humorous. The 2 friends with 2 very different characters meet each other by a throw of a pebble (know more by reading the book). They stick together and ride in the train of adventure and mysteries throughout.

I like their relationship
I like the relationship because it seems silly and it seems fun and there’s a punchline but what I really like about the relationship… Is about how they sometimes have each other’s back and act like friends would do. Slumber parties popcorn with a movie silly frilly skirts doing dramatic intros in class well… that’s not really what friends do jumping in the window saying tada and being friends with a unicorn but they’re still friends and I love it!
