'The Dream' is all push-n-pull, a harmonically distorted distortion of the best qualities of emo and hardcore and pop punk. -- College Music Journal, January 2003 Overall, a very good treat for the ear. -- Digital Noise, January 2003 This band is very melodic with an almost too-perfect hardcore/indie sound backing great vocals. -- Indie Sort, January 2003 Despite a growing, dedicated fanbase, word of mouth and interest, Hollywood's Open Hand remain one of the hardcore and indie-rock scenes most promising bands that you havent heard yet. But thats all about to change... "Open Hand developed from I Awake, a hardcore band I played guitar for. I was in the band with Alex," explains Isham. "I started Open Hand myself and made demos and we decided to go full time, because for me personally, I was way more into what we were playing as Open Hand. Sure, I am into hardcore, but Peter Gabriel is my number one favorite and I wanted to go in that direction." Open Hand soon became the biggest blip on the underground radar, touring with the likes of Thursday, MxPx, From Autumn To Ashes, Grade and The Juliana Theory. A bombastic buzz circulated in the underground, based on the band's shimmering sincerity, post-hardcore dynamics, and honest lyrical approach. "The Dream," combines their previously released Radio Days and Evolutions EPs, as well as one new song. "It's our way or no way. You have to bend sometimes, but it has more integrity to make it on your own path," Isham says. If we can be the band that does arise to the mainstream, we want to pull the scene with us. There are a lot of awesome bands in indie rock and hardcore that deserve a lot and don't get opportunities. We want to take them with us!" Potential
Open Hand is like bottled up potential with this cd. I heard about this band through the single they put on the "Punk goes Pop" cd, and wanted to check them out, because the song "Time to talk" was amazing. I can't say that the band didn't live up to the song, but they simply tried to put a little too much into it, making the songs garbled and confusing to where they were going. Throughout their whole album there are spotty places, where you think, "wow this band is awesome," but then the next instant they break off into something else, and you lose it. Overall though, this is a good cd, and if Open Hand capitalized on their ability to play songs like "Time to talk" and the first part of "Life as is," they would be pretty amazing. I would reccomend getting the cd, and trying it out for yourself...

yeah, this CD was alright during the first half but after that I would rather hear fingernails scraping on a chalk board.

One great song aside, there is a decided lack of memorable material
"11th Street" is an incredible song. So incredible that it got me to track down this album many years after I first heard the track in order to add it to my collection. I only wish the rest of "The Dream" offered the same experience. While I have heard much worse music in my life, there are a lot of issues with this release. One great song aside, there is a decided lack of memorable material. A song may start off with a catchy riff but eventually loses you when you realize it is a one trick pony. One of the biggest problems may actually be the mixing, as certain parts that should be more prominent are far too inaudible and become very distracting. What I can't knock is that there is a really good vision at play here. For example, when Life As Is kicks in your attention is immediately dragged from whatever else you may be doing to the music itself. It is just that interesting and unique. Unfortunately the song also features moments where various elements don't blend well together, making what could have been home run moments sound more like an arts and crafts nightmare. I am both interested and completely cautious of checking out any of Open Hand's later releases for fear of similar disappointment.

2003 Album of the Year.
in my opinion Open Hand's album "The Dream" is one of the best albums to come out this year. i was surprised when i heard they were on trustkill after i got a sampler from my work. trustkill made a wise choice by taking these guys under thier wings(otherwise, ferret would've gotten them). seriously though, this album is amazing, the first two songs crossfade into each other so well that the first time i listened to it i thought it was still the same song. Open Hand makes for a wonderful work soundtrack and it's good to relax to when i'm not listening to converge. i give it 10 stars not just 5. buy it or download it. it's worth it.

2003 looks good so far ...
This year is going to bring us MANY great releases from A Static Lullaby to Vendetta Red to Poison the Well, but THIS, this cd is kicking my ... !! Open Hand have possibly created one of the most perfet cd's for 2003. Sure you're going to disagree, but that's why we all have opinions. From the opening song "In Your Eyes" to the ferocity the title track "The Dream" brings to the dynamics of "The Struggle", you're not going to be sorry for making this purchase. if I could personally GUARANTEE you your money back if you weren't satisfied I would, but I have aan odd feeling that you're not going to want your money back. Just a hunch.

i enjoy open hand
a girl i met at my school gave me my first listen of openhand at first i thought they were alright but the more i listened to them the more i realized how amazing they were. the album is made up of two previously released EPs the first half of the cd is a much better recording than the older second half but i like the older stuff better despite the poorer recording i cant really describe what kind of music open hand is but what ever it is i like it and i think if you give them a try you will too p.s. if you ever get chance to see openhand live do it. the rock like no other.
