awesome product
this product is so awesome. i have purchased the shaver singly and in the party pack, two orders of each type. so i have my review of the item posted in both places, shown below: first purchase was in july 2013 for my granddaughter, big hit! then three more at Christmastime, one for me, one for a girlfriend's daughter, and a fourth for some friend's teenage boys. hits all the way around. i love shaved ice, with or without syrup. hawaiian ice sells replacement blades on their website: i have not found them offered for sale anywhere else, and wanted to, because their shipping is exorbitant, so high they should be embarrassed, but their ice shaver is awesome. january 20 2014 update: i got replacement blades (they are not thin like a razor blade, but a thickish piece of metal that tapers to an edge) to have on hand to use in the future, and extra cups to freeze the discs, which, btw, come three to an order. i ordered three and received nine, so that was a pleasant surprise. :) a comment about the leftover ice that cannot be shaved when the frozen disc of ice is used in the machine, a 3" diameter disc of ice that is about 1/4 inch thick. i have read complaints about this being a wasted chunk of ice, but i keep them, put the remaining piece of the disc in the freezer in a bag, and use them to cool down drinks that are in large cups, or to cool down brewed tea for iced tea. i consider having the leftover discs a bonus! i buy snow cone concentrate from Ralph's SnoBall Supply and make cavity/bacteria killing snow cone syrups with xylitol granules, a sugar alcohol sweetener, so every snow cone is a treatment for my teeth. you can even buy some of the concentrates that are clear, eliminating dye, but there are still the preservatives. they also sell syrups pre-made with cane sugar and charge reasonable prices for them, but i buy the concentrates to be able to use different sweeteners. xylitol is also diabetic friendly, and it doesn't taste fake, just good, and i usually HATE artificial sweeteners. i made some syrups with cane sugar this weekend for my grandkids to take home, or you can use stevia or whatever floats your boat. i am not using the xylitol to save on calories, but it does that as well. each 4-ounce bottle of sample concentrate yields a gallon of syrup. i make my syrups about a cup at a time. they are awesome tasting and making them with xylitol keeps cavity-causing bacteria out of my mouth. so fast, so easy, so cost-effective, so good. :)

2nd motor failure in 2 years. When it worked it made freshly fallen snow consistency shaved ice.
3rd edit: I just replaced it, didnt get ahold of anyone. Works great, lets hope this onr holds up. 2nd Edit: nearly exactly 2 years after the first purchase the 2nd machines motor has also died. Though I changed blades every 3rd or so time this was used, and even though this is the 2nd machine that has had total motor failure, it is no longer under manufacturers warranty, so I either have to replace and use the many spare blades and cups I bought, or waste all of the money I spent and choose something new. Going to try to reach out to the company and see if they're willimg to rectify the situation, will update again when I talk to them. 1st Edit: It stopped shaving ice about a month into use, BUT, thanks to the 1 year manufacturers warranty, customer service took care of the problem politely, quickly, and without any hassle. I got a replacement in under a week, got to keep the original blade and cups, and didn't have to ship the broken one back. 5 stars for customer service. Now, about the product, itself; I am in love with this little thing. It indeed makes "freshly fallen snow" consistency shaved ice. Because of the price, I was sceptical, but am pleasantly surprised, as it truly can make near perfect snow. It did take me a few times to get it just right, you'll definitely want to let the pucks melt just a little bit, or run the puck under water just a second, but it makes soft fluffy snow! It is definitely loud, but that doesn't really bother me, it doesnt take but a few minutes to shave an entire puck which makes a medium size mixing bowl of shaved ice. Only other thing is you'll probably want to have a blade replacement on hand so you dont put undue stress on the motor, as the motors seem fairly fragile. It's a sturdy little machine, for how lightweight it is.

Works Great!
It does says you can use ice cubes too, but it shakes all over the place if you do. I don't care for the design at all. No matter what, you do have to really hold on to the top while pushing down quite a bit, in order to get the ice shaved. This was not my first choice, because they no longer make the one I had, but I had to have something. Note: After waiting for the disc ice cubes to freeze, we had better luck with shaving of the ice. But the circle cubes trays did freeze into little mountains which made the fit odd. But,we found a way around this problem later, by adding a little bit sugar to the water before filling the circle cubes trays, the ice than froze flat. So this shaver DOES IN FACT, work a lot better with the flat circle cubes, rather than regular ice cubes... by a mile! So I have changed my 2 star rating to a 4 star. Also with the flat sugared ice the quality of the shaved ice is very fine, just like a slush. Which is very nice. But only because I still believe that they could have come up with a better design. I give this a 4. It needs improvement where the top removable part, drops in over the ice. Maybe a steady cylinder for more support. As it is, it shakes loosely at the top until most of the ice is shaved down. Which only than allows the top piece to settle down into the bottom case for the added support that I believe it really needs.

explain the bad reviews, and tell you how to get perfect ...
I'm going to review the product, explain the bad reviews, and tell you how to get perfect shaved ice if you decide to buy this product. I looked around, read a lot of reviews, and did a lot of research before buying this guy. It was the ONLY one I saw producing fine shaved ice in a YT video. Then I came to read the reviews and found a lot of people complaining about crunchy ice. That is because the blade is extremely sharp when you get it and it requires some technique before you break it in. I also saw some bad reviews complaining about it breaking down in a month - but it comes with a 1 year warranty. This product simply spins ice over a blade... the rest is up to the handler. Shaving ice isn't a complicated art but it isn't as easy as pushing a button either. You have to balance pressure with the sharpness of your blade. Here is what you need to know: 1) Chill anything that will come into contact with the shaved ice. Otherwise the first layer will melt, then get frozen by the next layer and you will have a layer of ice chips on the bottom. I suggest freezing a large bowl that barely fits under the motor to catch the fluffy snow, then using a cold spatula or something to pack it into the cone or chilled cup. 2) Instead of waiting for the small puck to sweat, smear the size you 're going to start shaving with ice-cold water over and over until it stops freezing over and remains glossy. The glossiness is important in getting the action started without chips. Waiting too long for it sweat means your snow will melt quicker too. 3) Ideally use pure water like RO, DI, or distilled water for the puck. 4) Don't drop your puck on the blade, set it upside down on the motor and let it stick to the teeth, then slide your stand upside down on the motor, then flip the 2 right-side up together. That way you don't accidentally chip or loosen your blade. 5) When your blade is sharp, pushing the button down is going to put too much force on the ice causing it to get cut into small pieces like a snowcone. For shaved ice, grab the motor housing with both hands and use your thumbs to press the button so you get full control over the amount of pressure you put on the puck. Put very little pressure on the puck and wait for a thin sheet of WHITE snow to come out. You will need to practice, but by being patient you will create white fluffly snow instead of chunky ice. Over time as the blade dulls you can put more and more pressure and produce shaved/snowy ice faster and faster. This is the main ingredient to a fluffy shaved ice as opposed to a crunchy snow cone. 6) You have to pack down your snow to hold the syrup. Keep in mind when packing down the stuff at the top, you're putting pressure and packing down the stuff at the bottom further. So compensate by packing the bottom less and increasing pressure as you go up or prepacking the snow at the top. This takes practice!

Want top quality shave ice at home? This delivers. 10/10
Honestly, the shaved ice quality that this outputs is perhaps some of the best you'll find anywhere. Don't hesitate to buy this. It is well worth it even as a small tabletop device. And yes, the syrups are absolutely delicious too. (Regular use almost 3 years now and not a single issue)

Lots of Problems, But Does Its Job
I use this ice shaver every day, and it definitely has some pros and cons. I'll do the cons first, because they're what I always want to know when I read a review. (Btw, I use this machine to make ice for my drinks in order to avoid breaking my teeth by chewing on ice. Keep that in mind when considering how the ice will react to flavored syrup). CONS: * If you use the ice in a drink within 24 hours, expect it to quickly melt. It needs about 24 hours in a freezer for it to compact enough to not melt right away. * The machine does NOT shave ice cubes well. Even though they fit in the container and the instructions say you can, it takes forever for the machine to shave them. You really have to use ice made in the circular containers they give you --- if you do, it shaves the ice fairly quickly. * You have to push down on the power button as you shave the ice. This bothers me, since I'm afraid it's going to cause the motor to wear out quicker. I'd much rather there be a switch. * The machine is in two pieces, and the top only connects to the bottom by a fairly thin piece of plastic. Since you have to exert a lot of pressure on the top in order to power the machine and shave the ice, I'm afraid it is going to break one day (though three months later, it's still going strong). I try to take care of it by supporting the underside of the top with my fingers and only using my thumbs to exert downward force on the machine. * The no-slip pad is pretty useless. It curls quickly and doesn't stay stuck to the machine. * The machine leaves 1/4" thick disc of ice at the bottom every time it shaves. I guess it can't reach all the way down. Not sure why it's manufactured that way, but it seems a big waste to me. * After three months of daily use, the machine seems to be having a harder time cutting ice --- almost as if the ice were slipping past the blade. However, as far as I can tell, the mechanism inside is still tight and the blade is still sharp, so I'm not sure why that would be the case. PROS: * Shaving the ice right after removing it from the circular container results in small crystal pieces, while letting it melt a little results in long flakes. * If you use the circular containers to make ice, the machine is fairly quick to shave it (within about 20 seconds depending on how much you let the ice melt). * It is less noisy than some other machines, though it still makes a loud whirring sound when you're shaving the ice. * After three months of use, it's still going strong. After trying the machine out, I debated whether or not to return it. I ended up keeping it, mostly because I didn't really see a better option for the price. It works for me as long as I let the ice sit for 24 hours (I rotate two bags --- one "old" ice for eating and one "freshly shaved" for sitting) so it's frozen enough to not immediately melt. Not sure if I would order it again. I'm still waiting to see if it lasts out the year.

Reasonably priced & works great
Bought this for my parents who wanted an ice shaver but didn't want the manual use ones where you have to use a hand crank to grind the ice (they're in their 60s). It works well and it is easy to use. Would recommend this to anyone who would like an electric ice shaver that is worth the cost; for a home use one, it is neither expensive or cheap in quality.

Makes decent shaved ice.
Very loud, but works well. I ate a bowl of grapefruit flavored ice before bed...it was refreshing. I bought it on discount and it works perfectly.
