Tuttle Pocket Hindi Dictionary: Hindi-English English-Hindi (Fully Romanized)

This dictionary met and surpassed my expectations. While it is pocket sized, it is packed full of both Hindi-English and English-Hindi words. The gender of the words are also included, which makes for a great learning experience. The price is awesome and the quality of the pages and print is excellent. I highly recommend this for any Hindi learner.

this product is helpful to some i’m sure, and it is easy to read through despite the size. it is very cute and small. i will use it in my studies at home. while going through airport security check in kolkata, i forgot a vape cartridge in my backpack so i got searched. the officer pulled this little book out, scoffed, and said “Really?” i told him i was american and he laughed. he let me go, but i will not be traveling with this anymore. i’ll just ask my husband to speak hindi for me for now. embarrassing

Finally!!! A Hindi-English dictionary with romanized spelling! So grateful to have found this little gem. The back of the book has English words translated into both Devanagari script and romanized characters. The front of book has the Hindi words in Devanagari script followed by the romanized spelling and a definition of the word written in English. So, so helpful!!! I saw someone complain that the definitions are only listed for the Hindi words in the front of the book, but I am totally fine with that. I already know what things in English mean. It's the Hindi script in which I find an explanation of what the word is more useful. Everyone has their particular preferences, and this book definitely suits mine. It is nearly impossible to find anything with romanization.

I've been waiting for this dictionary for a year since it was originally announced. People looking for this are probably in the same situation I was - looking for a good Hindi/English English/Hindi dictionary. I can only give it 4 stars however. Good: - Romanization is good, although I would argue you shouldn't need it to get in the habit of using devanagari. - A good selection of words. I have the Collins Hindi/English English/Hindi dictionary and it often had strange word choices when I showed it to native speakers, or would miss words that I would find useful. - Clear, easy to read font. - Physically compact (it's about . Not good: - Too small; compared to the word choice available in my Collins English/French French/English dictionary, this one has probably 10% of the vocabulary. - Few usage examples. For example, the English word 'look' can be used in numerous ways: look up (as in a dictionary), look down, look over, look at, look on, to look, etc. I'm not very good at Hindi yet, but the same problem exists in reverse. For example, the verb chalna has multiple meanings in English, and not all different uses are covered. Overall, 4/5. I was really expecting something with a lot more vocabulary, but so far my choices seem to be the giant Oxford dictionary, or this one. I'm hoping Tuttle can develop a dictionary for Intermediate+ learners as I feel I will exhaust this one quickly.

趣味でヒンディー語を勉強しているものです。サイズをよく確認せずに購入した自分が悪いのですが、辞書字体のサイズも小さいし、文字も小さいし、長時間見るのが不可能です。ことばの説明は、ほとんど一語でごく簡単にしか書かれてないです。ローマナイズは良かったですが、ヒンディ語の「あいうえお」順に並んでいるので、勉強不足の私はすぐに目的のところにたどりつけません。この辞書を持っていて良かったなあと思える日が来たらいいなと思います。

You definitely won't learn Hindi from this dictionary, but it is a great reference if you are trying to learn the language! More than worth the price!
