If you're interested only in Marianne's hits which include Come and Stay with Me, This Little Bird, As Tears Go By, and covers of hits I have A Love, Monday, Monday, Some Other Spring, then this is the cd for you. For a strong fan I'd recommend giving this a miss and purchasing only 1 or 2 songs that you may miss if you purchase her 40 song collection (some other spring, sister morphine, and something better) or like me you'll end up with come and stay with me like three or four times.

Had this album been released in 1970, its title would have been totally appropriate. Today, it makes it seem incomplete. A better title would've been "Marianne Faithfull's Greatest Hits from the 1960s". Keeping the above in mind, the album does deliver. I'm not a Faithfull fan, but all her sixties hits seem to be there. The order is not entirely chronological, but it starts with "As Tears Go By" and end with "Sister Morphine" nonetheless. These are also the songs I was interested in, as they were written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (with a little help from Andrew Loog Oldham and Marianne herself, respectively). Her version of "As Tears Go By" is, in my opinion, inferior to The Rolling Stones' later version, but "Sister Morphine" is very good here, and deserves its own place alongside the "Sticky Fingers" version (by the way, there's also a live version on "No Security" that you'll probably like if you like Marianne's version). Other good songs are "Summer Nights", "Something Better" and "Monday Monday". And just to end this review in the cheesiest way possible: Yours Faithfully

These songs bring back many memories of long ago. I am 67 years and when I was in my late teens, I fell in love with Marianne Faithfull. Many a night I went to sleep with one of her albums on the record player. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes to hear soft soothing music.

I rather stumbled onto this set looking for a way to improve my Marianne Faithfull collection. It is, in fact, the only set that I know of that comes close to adequately surveying her entire career. That is, it includes tracks from her early period (1964-1969, e.g. "As Tears Go By") and her mature, later period that commenced with Broken English in 1979. Sadly, though not surprisingly, it does not include anything from her "lost decade" (see Rich Kid Blues or the No Regrets ). And, in many ways, it's a beautiful package - lovely artwork, plus all the lyrics. But, there's not one bit of discographical or biographical data. None. Nada. Zip. This stuff could have come out yesterday, for all we are told. And - here's the most damning fact - THEY MISSPELL HER LAST NAME! ON THE FRONT COVER! AND ALMOST EVERYWHERE ELSE!!! So, I docked it a star. Plus, given that it comes packaged in a thick double CD jewel case, you can fit more Marianne on your shelves by picking up The Very Best of Marianne Faithfull (better than Abkco's Greatest Hits ) along with the stunning Perfect Stranger: The Island Anthology - that's what I ended up doing. As for the music itself, this set overlooks roughly half of Marianne's meager UK hits (including her biggest, "Come And Stay With Me"), and, despite including over half of Broken English , it omits the scathing sexual diatribe "Why'd Ya Do It." And, it skips her 1983 album "A Child's Adventure" altogether. Moreover, the jumbled running order juxtaposes Faithfull's early tracks (wherein she sounds like a veritable angel) with her later tracks (wherein every minute of the difficult intervening years is evident in her ragged vocals). She sounds, simply put, like two different people, and the effect is jarring. So, I docked it another star. Altogether, "Greatest Hits" comprises 37 fine songs, but it's hardly the career retrospective that Faithfull deserves - neither the one that puts her difficult career in perspective, nor the one that I hoped it would be.
