Great mortise lockset for entry door.
The Segal 27590 mortise lockset satin nickel, left hand, is a viable option. It works as described, looks great, and if installed with the finesse of a locksmith, will satisfy your entry door security needs. If you have gorilla fingers, borrowed tools, and rely on internet advice, to boil water... Beware! You might strip screws, bend spindles, and leave reviews that blame the parts. Easy install, if you have working hands. Segal is a name you can trust.

Awesome replacement for Mortise-style lock for older houses.
My older Russwin brand mortise lock had worn out (house was built in 1941) and it used a non-standard key (could not make a copy anywhere local). Locksmiths all quoted ridiculous prices to replace my existing lock (several hundred dollars). Replacing the door was even more money (several thousand dollars). I took my old one out, measured it, and was able to find its replacement for a fraction of what the local locksmiths wanted. (Thank you Amazon!) Its very sturdy and well made (its heavy --- very solid construction), has a nice finish, and was a simple drop-in replacement for my door. Please be aware that all mortise-style locks are not physically identical for thickness/offsets/etc. I had to take my old one out of the door, measure everything (lock depth/height/offsets/etc) and then find a brand and model that matched. If you don't do this, you will be unhappy when the new one does not fit... I am very happy with my purchase and recommend this brand.

Direct replacement for my old door
Fit directly in my old door slot and it's good for the money and easy to install, but the screw on the door knob constantly unscrews itself and has to be retightened. Also, would be nice to have a key number to have matching keys for the rear door as well, which is not provided.

DO NOT BUY!!!!!
This product is super cheap and not worth it at all. This is not for a front door. The quality was terrible and once installed it was defective. I had to call a locksmith and he told me this is the cheapest thing he has ever seen. I still had to go buy a whole new set from the locksmith. DO NOT EVEN BOTHER TO PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT!!!! It actually deserves ZERO stars!!

Very nice looking lock
I've been looking for a lock that would fit my front door for quite some time now and I just happened to stumble across this one, very easy to install and it looks very nice, it was a bit of a tight fit and I did have to remove a little bit of material but you're talking a very old door, the only thing I didn't like about it is the internals or dry as a bone, the latch did drag a little bit during opening and closing but after just a little bit and I mean just a few drops of oil, this thing works so smooth, I never thought an old door could open and close so smoothly.

Nice, but measure thrice
Felt sturdy and well built, sizing didnโt match the description.

Great Value
This is a great value. Other metal set costs $350+. This aligned perfectly with the existing strike plate and mortise opening. I had to make slight modifications with a wood chisel. After finally figuring out how to unscrew and remove the old set, remove the key lock from the new set, installation was a breeze! Please note that the plate is made of thin metal (likely aluminum) but all other pieces are heavy metal and very sturdy. This set is interchangeable for right-hand or left-hand door. Directions were easy to follow with diagrams and instructions in various languages.

Not a good solution
It's important to note that when looking for mortise locks for exterior mortise doors you don't really have a lot of options in this market. This was in fact the only external mortise lockset I could find for under $100. Does it work? Yes. Is it better than an unlocked exterior door? Yes. Does it fit in old mortise applications, as in precut to an older lockset hole? Not without serious modification. Does the fit allow the lock to work completely? No, not at all. The box is so bulky that the standard size mortise opening will NOT suffice. If there is any pressure on the case itself it will not lock/unlock properly. Also, and others have mentioned this, the inside surface of the knobs have a near-sharp ridge running around where your fingers grasp the knob. Folks not possessed of healthy, youthful skin (as in my mother-in-law, thanks for that) have a very high risk of abrasion or laceration if they are not very careful to let go of the handle before removing their hand from it.
