How wide of a chain can be used?

Anything wider than 1.5 ml would overpower it. I’d stick with a 1 ml (thin) chain, which is about what it comes with.

Does the set come in a box?

It does. You have to open the box and place the set into the jewelry box. It will come in plastic

Can I go in water or will they fade when They get wet

I’m not sure that it will “fade” but this is costume jewelry so it will turn color eventually from exposure to oils, water etc. It’s a beautiful set, but I bought for pretty much a one time use for my niece for prom.
