Leaks: If this is placed upside down or sideways in a backpack, will it leak?

It seems like it is built well enough that it would not leak but I have not actually tried it sideways or upside down.

can you hold the 32 oz bottle in one hand and pour comfortably?

Yes, my 65 year old semi-arthritic hand can easily pour it. However, people with serious arthritis may have problems with this and any other container. Very lightweight and stable and built to last. Favorite. We own two of them.

Can I drink directly from the bottle or I have to use the cup?

"...strictly forbidden....?" By who? The Thermos CEO? Lighten up, use common sense, and enjoy a sip right from the bottle. If you're into scalding hot coffee or tea, common sense says be cautious. But if you're drinking water or any cool liquid, enjoy yourself.

How tall is it and how wide is the base?

I measure the 25oz to be 11 1/8" tall and 3" across at the base although the product specifications show it to be 3 x 3 x 11.5 inches.
