Maas and Rebecca Yarros—where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be. The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel. I’ve spent my life kneeling—to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king. I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood. But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father’s throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life. Now I’m crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him—bound to a future I didn’t choose and a husband I barely know. Everyone wants me to be something I’m not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice. But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there’s power in being underestimated? And what if—for the first time—I reached for it? The Shield of Sparrows trilogy is an epic slow-burn romantasy best enjoyed in order. There was action, romance, self discovering journey m, monsters, betrayal, political intrigue and so much more. Loved Odessa and Guardian. It was clear from the beginning itself how Guardian was smitten with Odessa from early on. I enjoyed their equation. Every time he called her ‘My Queen’ I swooned! Sheild of sparrows Book Review
⭐ 6/5 — Absolutely Unforgettable Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry is hands-down the best book I’ve read in 2025. The plot was gripping, the characters unforgettable, and the twist left me speechless. Guardian and Odessa’s love story is so beautifully written that you feel every emotion right along with them. I was hooked from page one and couldn’t put it down — and now I desperately need Book 2. This isn’t just a book, it’s an experience. If you can, try immersive reading (book + audiobook). The dual narration made it even more addictive. Masterpiece. Perfection. Read it.

Definitely rereading it! 4.5 stars
The starting is a bit slow but immersive.. a rebel, a girl next door, a relatable character. Forced arranged marriage & the drama. Monsters Magic Then the banter begins. enemies to lovers, earning trust.. When she blooms into her true self.. With the reveal of the guardian, the plot becomes too pulling to not read it as if grasping for air! The book has 60 plus chapters but the pace picks up so fast that when I reached the end, it felt like I was about to fall off the cliff as the earth beneath my feet just vanished. For a moment I was stunned. What now?! Book 2 comes in April next year. I read this bk, part kindle, part audiobk. Guess till we get book 2, I will order a hardcopy of book 1 and reread it. Odessa & Ransom. The relationships are beautiful..with her pet monster, with elvie, with her horse.. And once the thrills starts coming one by one, the reveals o m g It kept me on my edge till the very end

EVERY BIT WORTH THE HYPE
Hello, fellow book Tarkins! Wondering what a Tarkin is? @devneyperry described them as the most beautiful among her monsters. Shield of Sparrows is every bit worth the hype!!! This book was God tier for me. I won't take any criticisms please. I mean-there are MONSTERS. And they are MONSTER HUNTERS!!! This is a Dess stan account now. I fell in love with her the second she jumped off the cliff. She's mischievous, sassy, and her inner monologues are hilarious. I just wanted to give that sweetheart a hug-and for someone to choose her as their first priority, for once. My heart ached for her, and when the slow burn finally burned, I was CHEERING the loudest. Don't even get me started on The Guardian. He was every bit swoon worthy. And the Crown Prince? Ohhh, we had a lot to unpack there. (Nope—not a love triangle or a why-choose situation.) Perry dropped breadcrumbs, and I ATE. The mystery around Turrah had me spinning theory after theory. The Voster Brotherhood was creepy in the best way. And the action scenes gave me major Witcher vibes. Highly, highly, highly recommend this book without a second thought.

Portal To Magic!
There are many aspects to a book that draw readers in; for some it’s the tropes, for some the cover, or the author, or perhaps even a review they read about the book. For me, it’s nearly always the blurb. The stage the blurb both, reveals and conceals, is always the first metaphorical handshake between the reader in me and the book. Often it is that interaction that either invites me to take a step forward into, or a step away from, the world created by the author. There’s not a single person I know, thus far, who’s read the blurb for Shield of Sparrows and not been intrigued by it. I will say, however, that the book is quite possibly a million times more than what the blurb promises it to be … and then some. The way a book begins—given that it is what draws a reader in—is nearly as essential as how it ends. Perry has truly achieved the perfect balance in managing multiple elements together. This book begins with one, the introduction of a character, two, a peek into the world building and three, the reveal of the tone of the story. The world Perry has created is vast but the author does a fantastic job breaking it down into perfectly consumable crumbs, that form a neat trail for the readers to follow, deeper and deeper into the dense and dangerous woods that makes up Shield of Shadows’ world. The best way to build a world is to introduce it anew to the character for the reader to learn along with them. But writing a character who is already immersed in the world, but on the precipice of awareness, without them seeming ignorant is always a challenging task. Additionally, making them loveable and relatable with all their flaws and beauty? Therein lies the true test. I would say that both—in the set up of her world and her main character—the author has outdone herself. You can tell Perry knows exactly what she’s doing and will likely be long remembered for her work. Especially for this one. Despite the many aspects of this book that work greatly in its favour, nothing is better than the writing. Even the weakest of stories can be the greatest adventure when the storytelling is outstanding. Given that nothing about Shield of Shadows is weak, the strength of the author’s writing only gives it wings. Most readers have now seen quite possibly all ways a story could twist and turn, and are rarely taken by surprise anymore. Perhaps the author knew this, because she used the greatest, most powerful trick in her book: misdirection. Just as the reader presumes they know the turns that the author is about to take and feels a sense of achievement and pride when the author does take them; we forget to see the actual twists that come our way until maybe just before the author is about to take them. Shield of Sparrows is the perfect experience even for the most adept of readers. If you wish to feel like a young reader again, with all the wide-eyed innocence and blind trust that comes with being new to something: read this book. The first thing I always do before starting a book is check the page count because I know that how I feel about it before starting might not be how I feel about it at the end. Even the thickest of books feel ‘not-enough’ when they’re fantastic and I always go in hoping for that every time I see a larger page count. Shield of Sparrows is no small book, but the pace is brutal and keeps you both rooted to the pages and flying because of how swift it is. Every single time I looked at the progress percentage I was surprised by how much further I was than when I’d last checked. I’ve spoken before about books with high intensity moments and the double edged sword it can be. My take on it is that, as gripping as it can be, it can be equally saturating and tiresome after a point, if overdone. However Perry manages to find the perfect harmony between the slower, softer moments and the faster, action filled scenes. There is a moment in the book where the protagonist practices dancing as part of getting better in another aspect of her life. It is almost like the author took that advice for herself and taught the many elements of her book to dance, so that they can work in perfect rhythm with each other when the time comes. The plot in this book is hard to separate from the characters, the writing, the pace or the world. Perhaps the reason for that is how well the author has hidden the truth of it beneath all the other elements, only allowing us the slightest of peeks. Even just those keyhole glimpses are enough to reveal just how promising and important the stage that the author has set is going to be. As much as this first book reveals, it is just the beginning. I cannot wait for the author to invite us into her world once again, for I think it is going to be an emotionally and experientially explosive read. Shield of Sparrows is everything I love in a book. It acts as a portal that has the strength to suck you in and drop you in a world of its choice and leaves you thinking about it long after you return home. Shield of Sparrows was a five star read for me. As always, please do check trigger warnings as this book has themes in it that can be difficult for some. Received an ARC.

An Addictive, Accessible Romantasy That’s Hard to Put Down.
From the very beginning, Shield of Sparrows pulled me in completely. It’s the kind of book that immediately captures your attention and refuses to let go. I read all 634 pages in under 48 hours, fitting chapters into every spare moment I had. The story centres on two princesses with very different relationships to royal life. Odessa, the eldest, has spent much of her life in the background, while her younger sister Mae embraces the expectations placed upon her, including a marriage meant to uphold a magical treaty. When events unfold differently than planned, the story takes a sharp and compelling turn that sets the tone for everything that follows. One of the book’s greatest strengths is how approachable its fantasy elements are. While the world includes magic, kingdoms, and mythical creatures, the writing never feels overwhelming or overly complex. The presence of familiar, everyday details helps ground the story and makes the world easy to sink into, even for readers who don’t typically gravitate toward epic fantasy. The pacing is fast and engaging, filled with twists that kept me eager to turn the page. There are layered character dynamics and subtle hints throughout that suggest more is happening beneath the surface than is immediately clear. Even when you think you’ve figured something out, the story continues to challenge those assumptions. The monsters add both tension and intrigue, ranging from unsettling to unexpectedly memorable, and they play an important role in shaping the atmosphere and stakes of the story. Romance develops slowly, blending enemies-to-lovers tension with an arranged-marriage storyline and a strong sense of danger. The balance between plot, character development, and world-building is well executed, making the story feel both immersive and accessible. The ending leaves plenty of unanswered questions and a strong desire for the next book in the series. Highly recommended for fans of romantasy and for readers who are curious about fantasy romance but want something engaging without being overly dense. ⭐ Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Top Tier Romantasy Book!!!
If you’re anything like me and deep in your Romantasy Book Era, then this book is an absolute must-read! Not only does it have the most stunning sprayed edges, but it’s hands down one of the best novels I’ve read all year. From the very first page, you’re pulled into a world brimming with monsters, myths, magic—and a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance that will leave you swooning long after the final chapter. Odessa Cross, once the forgotten spare princess, is suddenly thrust into an arranged marriage and a perilous journey that forces her to navigate not just dangerous lands, but her own identity. With rich world-building, deeply layered characters, and twists I never saw coming, this book is a masterclass in fantasy romance. I’m already counting down the days until the next one!!

Absolutely stupendous
From the time I started reading until I got to the end, this book held me in its grasp. It's the sort of book you stay up all night reading and hole up with until you finish working through the intricate plot, gasping for breath. I've really enjoyed the other things Devney Perry has written, but this one. Wow. The depth of her writing, the characters.... A masterpiece! I'm so happy I get to start on the second book straightaway!

Amazing
The book came in good condition, but it has a slight dent on the cover. Since I purchased it at a promotional price, it’s okay.
