Great Concert, Great Music and a Better DVD (Than Acropolis)
One thing you can't say about Yanni's music is it all sounds the same like it did in his earlier years. The old phrase that you hear one Yanni song, you've heard them all simply doesn't apply anymore. These pair of concerts done at the Taj Mahal and the Forbidden City were Yanni's follow-ups after the landmark performance at the Acropolis in his native country Greece four years earlier. But instead of doing the same ole-same ole bit, he expands his sound considerably focusing more on vocals, wind instruments and harder tribal sounding percussion. Aside bringing in his usual band and orchestral lineup including superstar violinist Karen Briggs, we also have reknowned Venezuelen flautist Pedro Eustache (who owns 600 wind instruments from around the world!), vocalists Vann Johnson, Alfreda Gerald, Jeanette Clinger and Catte Adams. We also get guitarist from Peru Ramon Stagnaro, which is somewhat rare for Yanni to use guitar in his music. This kind of lineup brings quite a different sound from his previous endeavors. The opening number Deliverence is an epic piece that just about showcases everybody and is an absolute WOW! The performances are bandied back and forth between the two concerts giving different backgrounds to them. One of the highlights is a song inspired by the famous bird called Nightingale that he dedicates to the people of China spotlighting Pedro using a very high register flute. The final number is a dance song called Niki Nana (We Are One) starting off with David Hudson decked out in an Aboriginal get up playing the didjeridu and puts on a rather humorous dance routine with Alfreda. The rest of the songs incorporate a wide variety of genres like jazz, classical, Latin and spiritual among others. My only disappointment as a former drummer myself is the absense of Yanni regular the stellar Charlie Adams, but Joel Taylor here does a good enough job. The DVD itself is certainly a step up from the poorly mixed Acropolis DVD that has a 5.1 mix that would make you cringe (see my review). Here the surrounds are well balanced but only serve for ambient effect which is fine, but you won't experience any real surround effects. Picture quality is about as good as can be with standard definition. Will there be any upgrades to Blu-ray with these two DVDs? Maybe, I don't think there would be much improvement with the video end of these concerts given the source definition. But the sound can be certainly improved upon and certainly needed for Acropolis. To say Yanni's music is diversified would be an understatement, especially now when his musicians are from almost a dozen different countries. Today, Yanni continues to explore with new sounds, styles and different instruments bringing in more edgier music. No longer the Muzak New Age label he used to revile and is now truly a World Music artist or Contemporary Instrumentalist as he likes to refer to himself. Keep on searching and discovering, Yanni!

Invigorating and wonderful production
I am purchasing this DVD for myself and one for my grandson. Yes, I have heard it, via a friend, and I was immediately taken with it. The talent is magnificent. Not sure always what Yanni is doing, but he seems to be enjoying himself, and I have to disagree with comments against him. He and the producers have provided us with something wonderful. I think those who like this would like David Phelps (probably my favorite). I say this, because I put him on right after Yanni, and saw some similarity. To me Yanni Tribute is inspirational, and watching the faces in the audience is a treat in itself. The singers, the musicians, the audience! Bravo!!!! There are not many albums that I like as a whole, but I like this one, big time.

The talent here is incredible
I've been a Yanni fan since he first came out on PBS back in the 90's. I've had his Live at the Acropolis DVD for years as well as about 5 of his CD's, including Tribute. I wanted the DVD after watching some of the songs played on YouTube from this DVD. After watching it for the first time I am so glad to have this DVD. The sound was great in Dolby Digital but the surround channels aren't all that active. They just seem to provide some depth and openness to the sound stage. The concert is great from start to finish, as are all of the songs. This is a great addition to the collection of any Yanni fan.

Yanni: Tribute
Of course, it all started with Yanni: Live At The Acropolis. The intoxicating mixture of upbeat and romantic/nostalgic moods with that catchy Greek rhythm. A soundtrack for any life with all its highs and lows, happiness and sadness, triumph and tragedy. And then Yanni realizes that all cultures have music to offer and that music transcends languages and barriers of all types, as well as ages! And so along comes Tribute, enhanced by the souls and instruments of different cultures inhabiting the world of today as well as ages long past and almost forgotten. And as exciting as the concert is to watch; both the performers and the audience, it only whets the appetite to have an opportunity to see a live performance. To be part of that whirl of humanity and to drop all mental and physical barriers so that you can be part of that collective world dance that celebrates life and its gifts.

The product arrived just short of the timeframe predicted. Not sure I like using imports though as the delivery takes so long to get here. Will bear this in mind in future when ordering as a present.
