Final Fantasy Starter Kit

Good starter kit to play with a friend! It came with two card box to store each deck! Thats nice!

Cool and fun decks for a decent price. I built commanders for both though they aren't super strong

My sons are huge into the Magic games and play weekly. We are taking them to Japan next year and they requested this item. They were excited to receive it and are debating whether or not to have me order them a second kit so they each will have one. They report back that this kit is perfect with no missing cards, in good condition and will be suitable for different levels of play from beginners on up.

This starter kit includes two ready to play decks, including a mythic rare Sephiroth and Cloud from Final Fantasy VII. The decks themselves are great for beginners. The cards are varied and will teach a lot of the most common card types and keywords in Magic, but they are not nearly as complicated as the much more expensive Commander decks available in this set. They're also fun to play against each other because they are pretty well balanced, so even more advanced players will find something to enjoy here if they decide to keep the decks unmodified. Beyond that, the Starter Kit includes two codes that are each redeemable for both decks in Arena, the online version of Magic: The Gathering. That way you can give one code to a friend or family member, and both of you will have access to both decks online! This is one of the best value items available if you can find it at retail price ($19.99 USD).

I'll say right now that you won't be able to build a competitive deck with just the cards in this Starter Kit, even with multiple boxes. Having said that, Magic Starter Kits are always good products, especially for beginners but also for just kick-starting the collection of the associated set. This one comes with a decent number of good cards that can be used in other decks you might build, and the two decks included make for an engaging beginner-level experience. Not only do you get the two decks and starter-rulebook, you also get a two token cards apiece per deck to go with their mechanics, and also, two codes that can be used to redeem *both* decks in the game's digital client, Magic Arena. Only one code can be used per Wizards of the Coast account, so the second code is meant to be given to a friend or family member so you can play Arena together. So that's a nice bonus! (Also, it will save you wildcards and booster pulls on whichever small handful of cards in this set you might want for your own Arena decks.) Anyway, I quite like this starter set, and, metagame-destroying nature of the Vivi card aside, I love the Final Fantasy set as a whole. You could do worse for a starting point for sure!

No BS review: This was a very hard product to review. I bought two, one to play vs. my wife who is new to Magic, one to keep un-opened. It's worth the purchase, and a cool set. There are plenty of reviews to say all that, though... The mechanics in this set to name the ones I can think of: +1/+1 counters, indestructible, -2/-2, -0/-9999, life syphon, menace, first strike, double strike, flying, reach, artifact, sorcery, instant, creature, flying (on your turn), exile, playing cards from exile, tapped dual lands, lifelink, mill, surveil, graveyard recursion, enchantment creature (not relevant), destroy target creature, life gain, enter the battlefield, attack triggers, classes (cleric, warrior - not relevant), and some I'm forgetting. They are balanced in that each deck can certainly win; but it's always a blowout. Being that each deck has 3-4 strong cards, most notably Cloud and Sepheroth, each game tends to be a completely one-sided and I called that as soon as I looked at them. They play like pseudo-commander decks, in that they seem to want their figureheads out, but they are really just a lot of pretty bad cards with a few good ones. Whoever draws their rares will win, and I intentionally put my Sepheroth back from my opening hand as they make it REALLY imbalanced. Our games constantly ended with one player at 20+ life and the other at 0. So if you're coming into this to LEARN Magic, it's a very cool set, comes with a very short "how to play guide" but it's more fan service than a balanced combat set. I would definitely pick a different pick a different set for the purpose of learning Magic, like Garruk vs. Lilianna, as blowout games aren't terribly fun. I also think for learning the basics, they included too many mechanics, most of which are used like once or twice. I'm an extremely experienced Magic player with 5+ Commander decks homebrewed, each $500-$700 so it's simple to me. To my wife, just getting a feel for tapping, instant vs sorcery, artifacts (that are living weapons at that) are too much for most beginners. If you want to teach someone Magic, do yourself a favor and build two VERY basic decks, like a mono-green and mono-red. Keep card power consistent and simple, like a red burn deck with 4x lightning bolt, 4x shock, 4x basic cheap creature, maybe a couple sorcery cards, and similar for the green. The decks I made to teach people are 100x more accessible to beginners as Magic is the most complex game in the world, especially for beginners. Great set, some cool cards, but I don't recommend for beginner play; spend like $10 on making two mono-color decks unless the person you're teaching is a quick learner and also loves Final Fantasy.

This is a good starter set for anyone wanting to try Magic: The Gathering, especially if the Final Fantasy crossover is what attracted you to the game in the first place. You get two complete 60-card decks built around Cloud and Sephiroth, so two people can start playing immediately rather than having to understand deck building first. The included guide helps with learning the basics, and the decks are balanced against each other well enough for casual games with friends or family. Existing Magic players may eventually want something more complex, but as an introduction it does its job very well. The Final Fantasy characters and artwork also make the cards enjoyable to collect even if you never become a serious Magic player.
