Is the mattress machine washable or just the cover, description is unclear?

Hi it is the cover that is Machine washable. I haven’t used it yet as baby no due to January

What has everyone used on the mattress to clean it before hand it has a very strong chemical smell thanks ?

Warm soapy water can kill strong chemicals smells and also let it air before using , If this not help spray with an antibacterial spray ie dettol suitable for furnishings

Would i need a waterproof mattress protector aswell?

I didn’t use one, if your baby will have a nappy on then there won’t be any need to. I started using one when they got out of nappies although you could use one when they get out of the snuzpod in case of leaks but up to 6 months your very unlikely to get leaks as you change more often. No it isn’t and the foam mattress is not of same quality. The mattress comes folded and the cover is loose, and mattress is light foam. Snuz pod mattress is heavy foam that comes with very snug cover and feels much better for baby
