This dictionary is designed for non-native speakers of Japanese, perfect for business people and students. There are over 50,000 entries, including the most common meanings. Japanese terms are shown in romanized Japanese and standard Japanese characters. The romanized entries are listed in alphabetical order, so no knowledge of Japanese is required. Review: Excellent reference source - This dictionary is great as a reference tool in terms of if your starting out in Japanese, its a great reference tool since it has both english to japanese and japanese to english. This is a Dictionary that any student of japanese should have as a standard tool meaning its a must have. I also recommend along with the dictionary to purchase as well Dirty Japanese: Everyday Slang from "What's Up?" to "F*%# Off!" (Dirty Everyday Slang) this second book should be purchased as a companion guide, you will learn as your translating that the dictionary will cover 99 percent of what you will be looking for but does not cover the slang or basically the informal speech that sometimes you may encounter such as in manga and so forth, so purchasing Dirty Japanese: Everyday Slang from "What's Up?" to "F*%# Off!" (Dirty Everyday Slang) along with the dictionary will pretty much cover you in terms of expressions and neccessary words, the dictionary every student should get to cover 99 percent of what you need but for the left over 1 percent get Dirty Japanese: Everyday Slang from "What's Up?" to "F*%# Off!" (Dirty Everyday Slang) Review: Good vocabulary here - The best option to study have a vocabulary, it is super good!

Useful for students
A pretty darn good dictionary, it is hard to find English/Japanese dictionaries that are comprehensive. I know some language purists bemoan Romaji in dictionaries, but it makes this dictionary uniquely accessible to both beginners and intermediate students of the Japanese language. Like many other reviewers have said, the Japanese and English sides aren't mirrored perfectly, but unless you are near fluent you probably wouldn't be held back all that much. It is a dictionary created for non native speakers and should be treated as such, unlike many other dictionaries this one is relatively stress free to leaf through on either the Japanese or English side. The only time I ran into any real difficulty in using this dictionary has been vague English descriptions of the Japanese words. Sometimes a Japanese word will have a very specific meaning, only to have a very vague English explanation. Often times this is harmless, but be aware that you could be using a word you think is a general term, but in fact has a very specific negative or positive connotation. Anyway, despite it's faults I love it, no Japanese/English dictionary comes close to perfect, but this one is about as good as it gets for those starting out in japanese.

The best J/E E/J I know of.
For the price, there's nothing better. Most of the Japanese/English dictionaries out there either have not nearly enough entries in them to be useful, or, their Japanese listings are written using Japanese alphabetical order (-KSTNHMYRWN). This can be maddening. Also, most of the dictionaries that are using Japanese alphabetical order also neglect to include definitions written in english letters. In other words, if you look up the word EGG, they will list as its equivalent "卵." They won't tell you how to say it (it's 'tamago' btw) . They also don't even bother to write it out in hiragana. They just show the Japanese character "卵." This dictionary, on the other hand, will show you the Kanji for words and then they also spell out the pronunciation of the words in Roman letters. I have four of these dictionaries. I bought one, used it up, and then bought three more. I also bought a tube of very strong glue and glued my old one back together. I've been using it now for about 18 years. I can't praise the book highly enough.

Great!
I know people like to say don't go for Romaji but seriously sometimes it just works. Although I know my hiragana and katakana well enough to read I find it hard to flip through a dictionary with ease if the entry words are written in hiragana/katakana. It takes me awhile to sort out anything beyond the secondary letters out. I find I spend too much time in reciting the alphabet in my head to get to the correct sections. Romaji is just faster, and for now it works so I use it as my primary dictionary method. In that regard this dictionary does a great job for a beginning dictionary. It's succinct and easy to handle. I supplement this with the Kodansha's Furigana dictionary and it works out really well as the Kodansha one gives me detail and dept and lets me practice my alphabet.

excellent for beginners
I especially like that you can look up the Japanese words in romanji with kanji also listed

Japanese To English Book By Random House
I have purchased 5 other Japanese-English books in Japan in the last 4 years. I recently ordered this particular book because 1. My sister loves it. She uses it in the United States for here Japanese Language class, and 2. All the other books were somewhat lacking and I didnt realize what they were lacking until I first used this Random House version. What Random House delivered to me was more words. All the other books I bought were missing tons of words that are used everyday in Japan. Random House somehow realized that I would be searching for these magical words and produced a document where I could locate them all. Thank you Random House. You will forever be in my heart, and my memory along with all the words I am now able to speak in Japanese because of you!!!

Outdated (1996 edition) But Still Worth 5 Stars For Good Reasons
Granted the book is a bit dated, so you won't find many Internet related terms (or even the word "Internet" itself) -- but I still give it 5 Stars and seriously suggest you give it a consideration rather than just skipping it because it's not super current... I have multiple Japanese dictionaries, of various sizes. Most are either Japanese To English, or they're English-To-Japanese -- but it's a pain carrying around 2 different and separate dictionaries. I do have a couple of really tiny "travel" dictionaries which contain both Japanese & English sections, but I'm in my mid 60's and my eyesight can barely see it (I have to carry a magnifier with me just to barely read the small print text) -- even when I was younger, the print is so small it would have been frustrating (and the vocabulary they hold are very minimal and lacking). Even though this publication was old, the price was so low that I figured I may as well give it a try (since I saw it was the size of a normal paperback book, which would hopefully mean easier print size to be able to read). It arrived fairly quickly, and I was glad to see it was indeed the size of a normal paperback book [first thing I did even before reading it was to see it it would fit easily in the inside pocket of my jean jacket, and it did. It's a decent size content size as well [1" thick], so it seemed to have far more available word translations and examples or meanings than the tiny 'Travel' dictionaries I had. The paper is more towards the older newsprint style paper rather than smooth white, but the text is very easy to see and read. The Japanese-To-English is in Romaji (romanization of Japanese Kana), so it would help if you know a little Hiragana and Katakana [so you can easily see how to spell the word you want to look up]. It also includes some English word mean variances (n., adj, etc.) and meanings -- as well as the Japanese Kana writing of the word The English-To-Japanese [which is in the 2nd half of the book] has a pretty decent coverage, including multiple Japanese word options depending on the desired meaning, usage, and context -- and is in Romaji [so you can roughly know how to approximately pronounce the words even if you don't know any Japanese Kana characters or lettering at all], as well as full Japanese Kana [Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji] which might make it easier if you need to point to the word you're trying to say. So why Five Stars for such an older book? Excellent Travel Size - fits in case, purse, or pocket (just the way pocket paperbacks were originally designed to do) easily -- and even with old eyes it's easier to see and read than the microscopic and frustrating mini Travel books Doesn't have more modern words and terms, but it does contain a fairly extensive word variety & vocabulary depth English letter Romaji (for those with zero Japanese), as well as Japanese Kana Pretty decent variety for contextual selection of words (translating English into Japanese) and short examples. Price -- considering how expensive language books can be, this edition has stayed at old school type normal [reasonable] low cost pricing While many people may think (I can just Google translations on my phone) -- what happens when batteries run low, no phone signal in some areas, or you're in an area where phones are not allowed [e.g. areas in Japan with No Phones Or Photos Allowed] etc. Having an easy to carry paperback option is a worthwhile backup (and a lot less fiddling and scrolling). Then again, if you're reading this review, then chances are you're actually looking for a paper dictionary to begin with -- So, considering how inexpensive this book sells for, definitely give it a chance and order it. For myself, this book has meant that I no longer have to tote around multiple dictionaries to translate back and forth between Japanese and English. I'm glad I gave it a try and bought it. Very happy with the purchase, and really worthwhile value.

O Dicionário chegou a desfazer-se
Algo está a correr terrivelmente mal com o processo de impressão destes dicionários. O meu com poucos minutos de uso já tem montes de páginas soltas. Que pena.

Good Study Aid
This is honestly one of the most useful books I purchased whilst studying Japanese. This isn't a book for a complete beginner as it's a dictionary - it's for those who have started to properly read and write in Japanese. It's useful for checking spellings and looking up words that you need to write in Japanese or for checking the meaning. I know a lot of people rely on the internet these days but this is the book I've used most!
