Wall Street Journal and New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni’s coming-of-age story is, according to Booklist , “a novel that, if it doesn’t cross entirely over into John Irving territory, certainly nestles in close to the border.” Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered, buoyed by his mother’s devout faith, his father’s practical wisdom, and his two other misfit friends. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design―especially not the tragedy that caused him to turn his back on his friends, his hometown, and the life he’d always known. Running from the pain, eyes closed, served little purpose. Now, as he looks back on his life, Sam embarks on a journey that will take him halfway around the world. This time, his eyes are wide open―bringing into clear view what changed him, defined him, and made him so afraid, until he can finally see what truly matters. Winner of Suspense Magazine ’s Crimson Scribe Award. Review: Great book! - Sam Hill was born with a condition. His mother told him from the get go that it was “God’s will” and that he was destined to be an extraordinary boy. Well, tell that to Sister Beatrice who denied Sam’s entry to the local parish school. Tell that to Donald Bateman, the biggest kid in school. Donald and his two sidekicks are the meanest bullies in the school…if you don’t count the Sister. Mom is a devout Catholic. Her rosary beads are well worn. She loves God and Sam and her husband. As we discover throughout this wonderful book, this mother is a force to be reckoned with. The story unfolds as forty year old Sam looks back on his life. He tells the rough parts and the good parts through remembrances. He was the last kid picked for recess games or school projects. He never received a party invitation from a classmate. He got a Valentine once. But. It had a bug in it. He never had a friend. He was in constant fear of Bateman and his toadies. But most of all, he wanted to make his mother happy. So, he lied. About school and friends and popularity. Until one day, a new student enrolls. The kid walks right up to Sam and begins to talk. His name is Ernie. He is the only black student in the school. Sam has his first friend. Later, Mickey joins the two boys. BFF’s for life. But, Bateman zeroes in on Sam. Once again, Sam embarrassed Bateman and Bateman never forgets. Mickey and Ernie are just gravy…you know, extra. This remarkable book continues with Sam’s current life and his reflections on the past that made him the man he is today. The story flows beautifully from the past to the present. This is a story of friendship. Of the love of a determined and devoted mother and a loving husband and father. And of overcoming adversity. I could not put this book down. The story unfolds smoothly, with well developed characters and short chapters. Some reviewers complained about the ending moving into too much of a “religious” experience. But I thought it was very much in character with the devout mother and a son who wanted to make a dream come true for his dying parents. Five well deserved stars for The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell. I am looking forward to reading more of Robert Dugoni’s work. Review: incredible!! - Title: "A Heartfelt Journey Through The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell" As a 54-year-old mom, reading "The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell" by Robert Dugoni was a poignant and emotionally resonant experience. The narrative follows the life of Sam Hill, a boy born with ocular albinism, and tracks his journey from childhood to adulthood as he navigates the challenges of being different in a world that often values conformity. From the very first pages, I was drawn into Sam's world, feeling the weight of his struggles and triumphs as if they were my own. Dugoni's storytelling is both raw and tender, capturing the complexities of human emotions with a grace that took my breath away. As a mother, I couldn't help but see my own children in Sam's willing spirit and unyielding resilience. The character development in this novel is exceptional, particularly in how Sam evolves over the years. Through the highs and lows of his life, I found myself rooting for him, crying with him, and celebrating his victories as if they were milestones in my own family's journey. The themes of friendship, love, and self-acceptance are beautifully interwoven into the narrative, offering timeless lessons that resonate deeply with readers of all ages. What struck me most about "The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell" is its ability to provoke introspection and self-discovery. As a mother, I was challenged to reflect on my own prejudices, biases, and preconceived notions about what it means to be different. Through Sam's eyes, I gained a newfound appreciation for the beauty that lies in embracing our unique qualities and using them to illuminate the world around us. This book is a testament to the power of resilience, the strength of the human spirit, and the enduring bonds of love that shape our lives in ways we may not always comprehend. As I turned the final page, I was left with a profound sense of gratitude for the reminder that in embracing our vulnerabilities, we find our greatest strengths. In conclusion, "The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell" is a poignant and unforgettable novel that will stay with me long after I finish reading it. Robert Dugoni has crafted a masterpiece that speaks to the heart, stirring emotions and sparking introspection in a way that few stories can. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to readers of all ages, as its message of courage, acceptance, and love transcends the boundaries of time and resonates with the universal human experience.

A Compelling Journey of Resilience and Redemption
Robert Dugoni’s The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell delivers a compelling portrait of Samuel Hill, a man whose distinctive condition shapes a life of challenges and triumphs. Set against the detailed backdrop of mid-20th-century Burlingame, California, the novel excels in its complex characters, particularly Sam, whose resilience and evolving faith resonate deeply. The exploration of forgiveness, love, and redemption, woven through Sam’s unique struggles, creates a satisfying emotional arc that feels both personal and universal. Dugoni’s clear, engaging prose enhances the story’s impact, making it a thoroughly enjoyable read. As Sam reflects, “Faith isn’t about knowing what’s coming; it’s about walking forward anyway.” His bond with friends like Ernie Cantwell—“Ernie and I were two peas in a pod, not because we looked alike, but because the world saw us as different”—grounds the narrative in enduring human connections, making it a great story.

The best book I’ve read in a long time!
This is such an amazing book. I typically don’t react on the outside when I’m reading .. it’s the inside that’s screaming or crying or mad but this one got me. I gasped out loud, I cried, I smiled.. it was just so wonderfully written and beautiful while also being sad. It’s the cycle of life.. it was so sobering. Your parents will suffer with your leaving and moving out and then you’re called back to care for those parents while you’re making your own family. I can’t recommend this book enough. Even the talk on faith kept me engaged. I bought a copy for my mom to read so she too can cry. 😂 I told another friend about it and she said it was in her reading list so as she drove to a soccer tournament (to it and back) she listened to it on audible and she also loved it. You honestly can’t go wrong with this read. You too will be searching your soul and reflecting on your life.

So Heartfelt!
Rarely do I reread/re-listen to books, but “The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell” is an absolute favorite and well worth reading/listening to over & over! The story is heartfelt and moving with many life lessons wrapped in. I laughed and cried both times. The lifelong bond of friendship between Sam, Ernie and Mickie is extremely special. Excellent storytelling and character development. I absolutely recommend this book and suggest listening to as the narration by the author is fantastic!

The Title Got it Right
I loved the breadth of the life story, all the way from earliest childhood to wise adult. The enduring friendships, and gradual acceptance of self, healing through service--all these principles were there through the story of Sam. I also loved the short chapters!

An extraordinary book with deep heart
The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni is an unforgettable novel filled with heart, depth, and meaning. This story follows Sam, a boy born with a rare eye condition that makes him look different, and the way that difference impacts his childhood, relationships, and sense of self. The book explores bullying, family, motherhood, faith, suffering, and resilience in a way that feels both honest and deeply moving. What makes this novel stand out is its emotional power. It is tender, at times humorous, at times heartbreaking, and ultimately redemptive. The characters are vivid and the story stays with you long after you finish. A beautiful and powerful read. Highly recommended. (no spoilers)

Touching, engaging, sad at times but heartwarming
A lovely story of a difficult life for a child who was born different at a time when differences were feared a lot more than they are now.
