Please see http://firewalla.com/compatibility/ Firewalla can operate in two modes to capture and filter traffic. The first mode is Simple mode, requires no login to router, it is true plug and play. Second mode is DHCP mode, this requires you to logging in to the router and disable DHCP server there. Both modes has pro and cons, please see the article.

Does this rely on using the firewall as network dns or does is utilize arp poisioning?

I assume you want to know how firewalla grab network traffic. There are two ways to do it, one is using ARP spoofing and the other is using DHCP to create an overlay network on top of your existing one. Firewalla does have DNS cache inside, so your DNS queries will be faster ... (we forgot to mention this in our descriptions). Does it block SYN flood and port scan? Is it effective when connected (with a help of a switch) between my ISP modem and router WAN port?

The box can block at IP layer, so it can lock out anything you want. These blocks will still consume CPU, so if you have a huge flood of syn packets, nothing will help. You can not connect the box between the modem and the WAN port, the box is a IP layer device, it will need an IP address. (That is, unless your modem is a IP layer device, which can issue multiple IP addresses, then it should be fine. )
