CKD Numbers are down!
We have a 13? Year old terrier mix rescue who was recently diagnosed with Canine Kidney Disease. Our vet recommended buying a phosphatec binder, specifically mentioning this brand. It was expensive (for me at least) at $35. BUT it is a HUGE jar (think extra large jar of Noxema if you're old enough to remember that! Maybe lrg size jar Cerave body cream for a modern reference) & the scoop inside the jar is VERY TINY. The good news is that it goes a long, long way. I think I calculated this jar would last us at least 8 mos for a 17lb dog. The hardest part is calculating the correct amount to give your dog if you're not familiar with metric measurements or conversions. IRead through the questions se tion a number of reviews to be sure I understood it correctly then I marked a line on the scoop with a permanent marker for what to give him with each meal (daily amount ÷ 2 meals a day). He doesn't always eat all his food so there is some guesstimating when offering him some alternative food to get him to eat something, but I just sprinkle a small amount on, visually trying to match the coverage seen with his measured doses & so far so good. From what I understand the food needs to have a light coating of the powder on it when he's eating it. Giving after, or before, won't help. The food has to have the phosbind attached to it at the time of consumption. We also heat his meals, so we wait until after heating before applying the phosbind. I have to do more research on it, but I don't think the food can be heated or reheated once phosbind has been added. I checked out all the other brands on the market & this is the best deal I could find & seemed to be the best product to use, too. The others, billed as more natural, had their own issues, including some side effects I wasn't comfortable with & they were a lot more expensive, so I went with what my Vet recommended. AND IT'S WORKED! Our dogs phosphate numbers are down & holding steady the last few months since we started using. Since his numbers have lowered, he's regained a little bit of his energy & spunkiness. The Vet has us use it with ALL his food, even prescription kidney food (when our dog will eat it, that is. Sometimes he likes the canned CKD prescrption diet food, but not the dry mostly). In the long run, it IS a cost effective way to lower his phosphate levels & prolong his life. If you need a phosphate binder for your dog (or cat), I, in my nonprofessional opinion, reccomend this product. So far, it's worked for me. The cost was $35. for the lrg jar, purchased Oct/Nov 2022. Reversed my senior dog’s symptoms!
My 14 year old dog was diagnosed with early stage kidney disease. We’re on her third container of Phos-Bind and have noticed a complete reversal of her symptoms. She hasn’t had any accidents, isn’t drinking more than before, and her energy levels are back to almost puppy level! I was concerned after her diagnosis when I noticed her slowing down but that is no longer the case.

Important tool for helping to manage kidney health in our cats
This is a product not to be used without a thorough understanding of its implications. It blocks phosphorus uptake; if you decide to use it, please talk to your vet FIRST or you could cause harm to your cat (or dog.) Our cats have early stage signs of chronic kidney weakness and we didn't want to let them "go over the edge" into full-blown chronic kidney disease. Our vet gave us an Rx for kidney food, but it's extremely hit-or-miss with what either of them will agree to eat. I'm happy that they've accepted the dry version of the Rx, but wet? Forget about it. So... choosing non-Rx already low-in-phosphorus-and-other minerals food brands, small amounts of this powder are added to keep things on track. The usage of the powder is based on your animal's body weight, NOT on the meal. Again, can't stress enough that there is a need to be completely knowledgeable about using this additive to your cat's (or dog's) food because too much is detrimental! Best answer is to get your pet to accept the Rx food, but if you can't get that to happen, this is one of two things I do to manage their health, the other being to give them only distilled water (we live where our tap water is FILLED with minerals, otherwise known as hard water) in their fountains and drinking bowls.

Worked great
Navigating kidney issues in dogs is so tough - I sympathize if you are on this journey. This product worked better than the vet recommended supplement … AND my dog’s kidney levels IMPROVED. Her meals consisted of kidney prescription food, disguised with ground turkey, pumpkin, and rice.

So-so
I didn't see any improvement in my dog's phos numbers when using this product, which is the point of feeding it, but I did like that it was odorless and tasteless, so it was easy to mix into her wet food. Also good price for a good amount of product.

Highly Recommend!!
Update: I've been giving this to my cat in early kidney disease for about one year now. At last exam 6? mo's ago her kidney values were good! I just read that vet nutritionists finally admitting that high amount of high quality protein is important for CKD cats. It's the high phosphorus levels & high carbs in most commercial pet food that is causing kidney damage. There is no adverse taste so easily mixes into the food. I also give this to my HCM cat to help his kidney - the diuretc medicine is hard on their kidneys. Helps him so much. Great product! I bought this for my cat who had mildly elevated kidney values at her last exam. Rather than feed her the prescription food with all the corn, soy and other garbage I opted to try putting this in her food that has no corn, soy, carageenan or other garbage. Her updated blood test is coming up soon so if her kidney values down then I know it's working and will update this review. The powder itself is very fine so it is a bit messy but no big deal. Just be careful when scooping it out.

The scoop was not included as written here it will be for proper dosage. I don’t know how to measure a dose for my cat in mg.

This can cause severe constipation which if I had know I would not have given to my cat. Also the scoop is so big for a cat it’s hard to give an exact dose, I wish they had a better way to measure.
