Bought this along with the same author's 'Linux Command Reference' to facilitate our transition from the big Em Ess to an all Linux operating environment. As former 30+ year Em Ess partners, we wanted a straightforward approach to configuring and integrating an entire Linux environment from servers to desktops. This came about because we've been personally testing Linux desktops for the past year and finally decided that the wait was over. Everything about Linux is preferable to both fruit and Em Ess. Kofler's books have almost all of the required information in one place and are easily accessible for both set-up and troubleshooting (though we've had virtually no 'troubles'). Really appreciate that this author isn't trying to hawk a particular version of Linux. We've become Debian advocates with the Debian Mint desktops at this point after our testing. Some reviewers complained about the lack of coverage for containers in this particular book. Docker is covered in a separate book by Kofler and it truly deserves its own book as a Linux only VM. On the other hand, translators like Wine, Bottles and Steam are covered elsewhere, though WinBoat is akin to Docker in that it's a VM and containerized. The Linux world constantly evolves and more recent evolution makes it incrementally easier to encapsulate Em Ess applications within the Linux environment. With few exceptions, we've found that for daily life we no longer need any Em Ess applications. Golly. Review: One the best books I've read in along time - Lots of good subjects are presented in this book and best of all is that it covers a wide variety of distributions that more recent that most. Which is really nice when you try to build a custom installation.

The next bible? We'll see in 2025
I've been waiting for the 11th version of the Linux Bible and when I came across this with a 'half off' discount, decided to give it a try since the next edition won't be released till next year. I think this book is definitely a contender. Unfortunately, a lot of these types of books suffer from the first half of the books being for 'beginners' yet they are not written for a beginner. If we're being realistic, a beginner is not going to pick up such a resource (and if they do, they're going to be using it as a supplemental source to something else like beginner videos or books written specifically for people who have no exposure). I'd gladly wager the majority of people that end up buying books like this are past the beginner phase. There's nothing wrong with covering certain areas like installation and configuration, it'd just be nice to have some more technical or advanced coverage instead of the typical 'click next' that anyone in this day and age can figure out. Overall, I think it's a great refresher for people like myself who don't get to keep up with all the latest news and advancements and need a resource in the form of a bible that we can pick up when we're able to review what's different. Unfortunately, this book really doesn't cover Linux in the modern sense since containers and the cloud are missing (at the very least any modern Linux book of this size should really go over containers). With that coverage missing I knocked it off a star. If you can get the book for half off like I did it isn't a bad pickup until you're able to get your hands on some more advanced books.

This book should answer all your questions
I'm done with Windows and Microsoft. Dos was fine but clicking on an icon and expecting everything to work like magic hasn't worked for me. This is a comprehensive book that should be helpful after decades of depending on Windows. Windows and Mac have gotten so bloated and invasive it was time to make a change, and this book should make the transition a lot easier.

Comprehensive It Is
This book is the most comprehensive Linux book I have ever seen or read, it is massive, and contains many outside references to even more info about Linux. The book is very well written and explains Linux in detail. Unfortunately after reading several chapters I realized that to use Linux effectively you need to understand much of the vast information contained in this book, and that doesn't even include system configuration and administration or server configuration. Learning all that is not a trivial undertaking and overwhelming in scope. This book completely discouraged me from switching from Windows to Linux. Using Linux effectively is extremely complicated, requiring a vast amount of time and study, I expect to become expert requires years. Using Windows is trivial by comparison. Although Windows 11 has many serious issues which i hate, and these keep getting worse with each Windows release, this book clearly shows Linux is not the answer, no matter how much I wish is was.
