This powerful novel of a nation in social and moral crisis was first published by New Directions in 1956. Set in the early postwar years, it probes the destructive effects of war and the transition from a feudal Japan to an industrial society. Ozamu Dazai died, a suicide, in 1948. But the influence of his book has made "people of the setting sun" a permanent part of the Japanese language, and his heroine, Kazuko, a young aristocrat who deliberately abandons her class, a symbol of the anomie which pervades so much of the modern world. Review: powerful - The book is emotionally and mentally challenging, it also paints a scene of Japanese culture and conventions of the aristocracy which is not apparent to many western readers including me. Great book. Review: Good book for my daughter - Good price quick delivery

The Setting Good
I like it. But comparing to ''No Longer Human'' that is just no match, but this one ''The Setting Sun'' was created before the ''No Longer Human'', so this one helped Osamu Dazai to created his masterpiece. Either way is a decent and strong book with good characters. It was nice to see Osamu Dazai on the perspective of a woman.

I am in a book club and this book was chosen by a member. I did not know the author. The book was very well written and interesting in its detail of Japanese life

Amazing book, itโs probably one of my all time favourites. The format and the physical state of it was also great.
