Good pickup sound, but the bridge isn't great.

The sound of the pickup is pretty good, especially when used with a preamp (I used the Behringer ADI21, which seemed to crop up all over Banjo Hangout). However, the bridge itself isn't great, I've been getting sitar-like buzz ever since I changed it, and of course it is impossible to change the bridge. However, unlike the other reviewer, I -did- get both pickup and tone control and bridge all in one.

Shadow Pickup/Bridge

Very good pick up which delivers a nice sound to the amp. Would be better if there was a more secure method to fix the volume/tone controls to the banjo apart from the vecro as these tend to come apart when playing and are quite a distraction.

Not as described.

All that is delivered is a long wire with the two pick ups, doesn't come with volume and tone control and doesn't come with the banjo bridge, buy something else.

Does the job but a pre-amp is a must

I've had this about 3 years now amplifying an open-back banjo. It's done the job Ok, but overall I am not impressed and I will soon be looking for something better.Pros--Relatively easy to fit and remove, doesn't damage instrument.-Holds in place securely.-Does a not bad job of picking up sound-Comes with a volume and tone control and the lead to plug in to an amp or PA.Cons--The sound is metallic, and rather guitar-like (this can be migated by careful use of a preamp EQ.-I have found the output rather weak by itself, not only worse than integral pickups on electro-acoustic instruments but suprisingly even much quieter than the output from stick-on piezzo pickups I have seen friends using on mandolins etc. You definatelty need a preamp if going through a PA- especially when playing with drums and other amplified instruments.- The pickup/bridge deadens the sound when playing acoustically, and has an unsightly wire that has to go across the front of the banjo head so you will probably not want to leave it in place all the time. As a result you may end up swapping the bridge on your instrument fairly often and this is obviously a time consuming task as you need to be careful with positioning when changing bridges to avoid damage, and you have to retune the strings each time.I would advise banjo players to either go for a cheap £20 stick on which will probably sound as good as this, or spend a bit more and buy one of the internal pickups that fix to the rods inside the pot and can be left in place all the time.
