Best Gate Ever
I bought this to keep the dog out of the rooms where the cat food and litter boxes are kept. I'm "vertically challenged" (or so my kids say), so continuing to step over our gate was an accident waiting to happen. My older cats don't need the stress on their joints from jumping over either. Here are a few thoughts/opinions from my experience: •Assembly is simple and quick. •There's a bright yellow sticker, in bold font, placed along the full height of the gate stating that it will NOT align or latch without tension - meaning, putting it where you want it and tightening it in place. For those who wrote reviews saying it was crooked, warped and didn't latch must not have read the directions or seen the big bright yellow sticker. It's not damaged and works wonderfully if you follow directions. •I have a larger cat in body structure and another that's enjoyed being a lazy house cat (aka, chubby), both fitting through the cat door without issues. The dog was highly offended that he couldn't fit, but continues to try, only getting his head through, offering the cats the opportunity to give him a few head "pats". Some are quick learners, some not so much. •The cat door is either latched closed or swinging open, so I used a small bungee cord to keep it open. •The gate opening is (obviously) narrowed in comparison to a doorway, so bringing something through will likely need to be in front of you, behind you or higher than the gate. •The gate opens and latches closed with ease. •Definitely worth the money and glad I bought this gate. *Note: I compared prices at multiple pet and department stores. The prices were doubled (or more) than on Amazon.

Very tall and sturdy and great for small pets to come in and out of the gate, works perfectly
Love it! It keeps my new cat safe from my bloodhound and it keeps the bloodhound from walking into my room and eating and drinking the cat’s food and water. It’s really tall and well-made which is perfect for a dog as big as mine. It keeps my room a little cleaner and smelling fresher now that he’s not allowed in here and is unable to just waltz in at any time. I love him but I was having issues which I’ve already explained. I love that it has a gate in the middle bottom that the cat can use when she wants to come in or go out of my room. I don’t have to worry about having someone let her in and out if we aren’t home for a good amount of time and I don’t have to worry about the smelly, drooling, shedding dog coming in here to enjoy the poor cat’s meals or attempt o play and say hi to her, which by the way, he was also doing and she just wasn’t having it! Overall, this is an amazing product! I would have loved to give it more than 5 stars, but 5 is all we get. I also wanted to add that it’s very easy to be able to walk through the gate. It has enough space to walk in and out of the gate without any kind of issues. I don’t mean to be rude, but you have to be pretty wide to not be able to fit through. There’s nothing wrong with wider people. I’m just saying this in all honesty that wider people, this may not be the right gate for you. My intentions are really not meant to offend anyone, so I’m so sorry if I did in advance.

looks good and keeps kitty safe.
Was easy to put in my door way. It is solidly built and should last for years. My cat appreciates that she can go in and out and the dogs can not follow. It fit good and was secure

Huge white warning sticker does not come off
Huge white warning sticker and the smaller white warning sticker do not come off without goo-gone and some serious elbow grease. I understand that it’s terrible that children can kill themselves on this gate, but I don’t even have children… I do have a huge white sticker saying the gate has killed children which I can’t take off, which is a little ridiculous. The stickers wouldn’t be so bad if the gate wasn’t black, but I’d have to wait for a month to get a white one, and my cat needed a gate to get some down time from our boarder collie asap., so black gate with huge white warning sticker about children dying it is! It was easy to put together, though annoying that the door kept swinging and pinching my fingers or randomly changing the weight balance and tipping out of my hands. There are 2 screws that you have to actually thread, and the rest are just dowel style, which relies on the pressure of the install to stay together. Looks reasonable enough. The little cat gate does not have a way to hold open. You can change the latch so it won’t swing through the gate nor latch closed, but it’s just hanging open and can look closed or require your animal to push the gate open. That’s a little annoying to me as I want my cat to be able to dart down the hallway and through the hole to get to sanctuary quickly… not be afraid the gate is latched and he’ll faceplant the gate. I’m going to put a little elastic to hold it in an open position. Overall, it’s a decent gate. Quick easy install and good price. Few little annoying details but some goo gone and a hair tie will fix it.

Phenomenal on all counts
I wanted the gate to introduce two cats and it did the job. We’re still in the process of introduction and the gate has proved invaluable. I tried another, somewhat cheaper gate which was awful. Didn’t allow for wall woodwork which was my fault for not really checking but, in general, was flimsy and not strong. The Carlson gate is phenomenal. Strong, relatively easy to put up with someone holding it for you and attractive. Tall enough to dissuade my cats from jumping over it. The walk-through door is easy to use and the wall tension mounts are clever in design and work perfectly plus the price is surprisingly low for the quality of the gate. Included is an extension which may come in handy at some future time. Getting back to the cats, one cat is a hefty guy and couldn’t get through the bars. Eloise, the other cat, is, by contrast, a small kitty and I wouldn’t be surprised if she wormed her way through the bars. Only complaint is I wish there were an extra wide model to block off our kitchen from the ever inquisitive Eloise. Much to my disappointment, I cant’t figure out a way to double up on this gate to provide the needed width for the kitchen blockade. I would rebuy this gate in a second if needed and wholeheartedly give it 5-plus stars on all counts.

Nice sturdy tall gate...cats can still jump over but dogs can't
I have 2 bigger puppies (8 mo lab/german shepherd & 6 mo Aussie/Heeler mix) and 2 grown cats. I had purchased cheap plastic baby gates that lock in place, but my dog's either pushed those down or jumped over them with ease. These gates are nice, tall, and sturdy. I bought 2 gates and and put each one up myself in about 5-10 min. The directions were pretty good but if you have a hard time with assembly directions it might help to have another person help. I saw reviews where people bought these gates in hopes of keeping their cat out of rooms but were disappointed b/c the cats jumped over the gate. I would only use this to keep dogs out of rooms. Cats can jump over most anything in a doorway and you should get a screen door if you really need to keep out a cat. My 7 & 8 yr old cats jump over these gates with ease. I thought they'd need the door but they don't. But the pet door maybe useful for older cats. The Aussie/Heeler mix is very flexible and can still slink her way through the small pet door so we just keep the pet door closed for now. The only thing I don't like is when the small pet door is open, it freely moves back and forth rather than staying in a permanent open position on one side of the gate. This causes the little pet door to bang into walls or get in your way when you open the big gate to walk through. You could fix this by tying the door open to one side of the gate so it doesn't swivel back and forth. Other than that this is much taller than a regular baby gate, easy to open and close and is very study once secured in place...plus it doesn't look ugly like the plastic baby gates. I highly recommend this gate if you need to keep out dogs that can jump or push down smaller gates. But don't buy this gate expecting to keep your cat out unless your cat is not able to jump at all.

great escape for the cats from the new dog
These worked out so good, we have one on almost every door now. That is not the best choice for us but it gives the cats a place to escape the new dog! The opening isn't the biggest, but we are not the perfect weight people either! Fits the door opening good with and without the extension piece included. Just have to remember to close it behind you.

You get what u pay for.
Ok srry for the long review but i should have did this awhile ago and want pple to know what to expect..This is the 2nd time I bought this gate due to its price being what I can afford with the cat door option and it not being an option to have 1. I didn't love it the 1st time but again options. I did have the 1st 1 for a little bit ( a yr, little more or less?) BUT the whole time had issues and even had to duck tape/zip tie some parts..I know but it worked 4 what i needed lol! Anyway, the issues I had was alot of rattling no matter how tight you have it set up and the door of the gate itself and the cat door both are flimsy enough that they do seem to bend and get crooked from normal use which is why I had to tape/rig some of the parts that eventually snapped from always being bent where it wasn't meant to. The latching part was not the best either but it did the job you just have to make sure it actually locks. So once we got to the point where taping and tying was no longer working, I decided to replace it with another 1 rationalizing that I got the use out of it for the $ i paid. So again bcus of limited options I ordered another.. and this one is even worse! The gate is already warping just from setting up and the latching system is horrible and barely locks in place. I mentioned the last 1 was a bit finicky and u had to be mindful of making sure it actually locked..but this 1 barely does at all! 1st u have to fight with the button that barely wants to give then u gotta pull it up a shake it into place until it catches. It may not sound all that bad but when u have to do it EVERY time u open and close it it is incontinent especially when holding stuff. Also, having these kinds of gates for many yrs and knowing how they're supposed to work just makes it all the more irritating. As mentioned, I've had all kinds of these gates so yes, i know how to set them up and use them, yes, im careful and no, nothing or no1 is pulling, yanking or banging etc. So i guess this is just 1 of those times where u rlly do get what u pay for. All that said, if u need a cheap temp gate this does work, just know it may not last long and there may be some annoyances u may or may not be able to put up with. Oh..and the cat door is either locked or flung all the way open and slamming around when going in and out, there is no in between, that's 1 of the areas where zip ties came in :) Well that's my review, I hope it was helpful for someone.

brilliant cat door within the gate
this is a brilliant dog gate as it is higher than most and most important to me, has a cat flap within it. I have a very elderly GSD with worsening arthritic hips. I needed to stop him attempting the stairs as he had already had several slips which just made his hips worse. At first I installed a normal baby gate but the dog tried to climb over putting excess weight on the top of the gate and even worse my smallest cat tried to force her way through the gap in the gate bars and got her head stuck - panic ensued until I eventually turned her head to get her out, but it was scary. Then I saw this gate. I didnt think the cats would like going through the cat opening, but all 7 atook to it immediately and it has saved me having to constantly having to get up and let one of the cats in or out of the room. The cat opening is quite low on the gate so it was never going to work on the stairs, but I fitted the gate on the kitchen door instead and the whole thing is just perfect for my needs. The opening mechanism is also better than on a child gate in that you can just pull the opening gate to and it locks into place automatically.
