I bought this for my husband because it raises seratonin levels in the brain (one of the feel good chemicals in the brain, and one of the most commonly deficient in people). As he was getting older, he was getting crabbier and crabbier, grouchy, negative, and would bark at me for no reason. I was so fed up! Then I read an article that talked about how men express depression different than women, they get angry and even aggressive. So I found a quiz on line and asked him the questions about his feelings in various areas. The quiz results tell you which feel good brain chemical is low, or lowest (it ranks them). For him, his seratonin was very low. I bought this and waited for a grouchy spell (didn't take long) so I asked him to take one (fortunately he was open to taking it) in 20 minutes, he was like a different person! He was smiling and joking around! The effect lasts 3-4 hours, so he now takes them with breakfast, lunch and dinner. The man I married was back! Thank God because I didn't like the other guy at all! Highly, Highly, Highly recommend! (P.S. some people need to take 2 pills at a time, depends on the person, if that's too much, you just get sleepy, so then you back off to 1 again. Mine hubby only needs 1 pill three times per day. This stuff can save a marriage!

Good price and quality

My trainer recommended 5-HTP for better rest and recovery. I've been impressed with the Solgar products incorporated into my diet lately, and so I thought to give this a try. I take this along with Solgar Sweetest Dreams and a Solaray Magnesium, Calcium, and Zinc supplement at night. I've been sleeping deeper, falling asleep faster, and waking up more refreshed. Also, my endurance has improved during my workouts. Because I've never isolated the products, other than the Magnesium, Calcium, and Zinc supplement, I'm not sure if I would have the same benefit by just taking this one product. However, there's no doubt in the improvement in the quality of sleep and health that I feel with the combination. Also, I tried New Chapter Tranquilnite Plus which is quite similar to the Solgar Sweetest Dreams, and did not get the same feeling of being well rested and energetic as I did when adding the 5-HTP. So, I definitely can recommend this product. Also, I'm usually a fan of the New Chapter line up of vitamins. However, the Tranquilnite Plus smells horrible. So, I would go with the Solgar or something else for the sleep aid.

I usually get it as some other stuff here for an old friend of mine, who doesn't use Internet. She says it does work. For us we use it sometimes as sleep aid and in the end of a stressful day. I'd say it is a very effective supplement, but also gives some vivid dreams. For that reason we don't use it so often as others. But we do love "Solgar" and trust them.

Everyone is different, but the Valerian combo in this (it’s not just 5-HTP) makes me super drowsy. It would be good for someone at night, or to de-stress into a nap. I need something where I stay functional in the day, so will look for straight 5-HTP and save this for night.

I take one of these before bed with a little bit of chocolate to help activate it. It helps me sleep more quickly. I've noticed a slightly better mood during the day but can't say if it's because of extra serotonin, or from a better night sleep or just placebo effect. But this stuff definitely makes me a bit more drowsy in about 20 minutes, without the weird feeling that sleeping pills have.
